Woke up at stupid o'clock and started a mental rummage through my cupboards and fridge. Have got up now leaving DP (who's 150 miles from elderly family and a bit down) in bed, and decided to make a lemon/orange drizzle cake. Haven't got a loaf tin but got something in remotely the right shape. Also only have duck eggs (as they were the last ones left when I last went shopping.) I will post a pic when it's ready....hope it's edible, don't fancy slinging out a load of perfectly good ingredients!
Anyone else baking today?

Today I have made... Chocolate chip pancakes and a banana loaf. Which I completely ruined by not letting rest and forcing out the tin ripping the bottom off. Still tastes good tho!

I have also ran out of plain flour. Very annoying as there is zilch!

Yesterdayforgotten · 24/03/2020 20:04

I managed to get self raising flour today but had to get a dearer brand. Havent been able to get a hold of plain flour for a couple of weeks now. I see it's not just me having problems getting hold of oats. Who is taking all the oats and plain flour?!

Yesterdayforgotten · 24/03/2020 20:05

kleew1 that's when custard comes into play...lovely

Mominatrix · 24/03/2020 20:08

I have a loaf of sourdough bread proofing in the fridge overnight as well as a batch of sourdough wholemeal bagels. I also made a lime pie for pudding today.

Interesting that flour is in low supply - are people baking more or are they just hoarding?

I just took this out of the oven - cinnamon Amish friendship bread. 12tomatoes.com/amish-friendship-bread-video/

RoseDog · 24/03/2020 21:10

H1978 I'm going to do that with the apples I bought that no one eats!!

I opted for the lemon drizzle cake today, the banana loaf can be Thursday task!

@Mominatrix do I need a specific type of yeast to make sourdough bread? I only have standard easy stuff in sachets

managedmis · 25/03/2020 01:07

I am making the kids banana pancakes tomorrow : bananas were on special and so was maple syrup

Mominatrix · 25/03/2020 01:23

DorsetCamping, you need a starter made of wild yeasts to make sourdough. You essentially ferment a batch of flour over a couple weeks to start the starter, then keep it fed. Dan Lepard’s book has detailed instructions on how to do this.

My starter is currently almost 10 years old. I’d be happy to send you a bit of mine through the post if you want with instructions on use ( I originally obtained mine this way through a cooking forum from a baker who had his for 25 years). Just PM me.

Mominatrix · 25/03/2020 01:26

Just remembered another place to obtain ready to use sourdough starter - Bakery Bits. They sell flours, baking equipment, and related items through the web and are a great resource.

Thepigeonsarecoming · 25/03/2020 01:32

I bought two small loaf tins in Aldi for £1.99 today (I was doing my essential weekly shop but they were there). Since it’s only me and hubby at the moment thought they’d be good for banana bread, or fruit loaf 😄

midwestspring · 25/03/2020 02:50

@evilharpy talk to me about mincemeat shortbread, I have several jars left over from Xmas.

Thekindofwindowsfaceslookinat · 25/03/2020 03:02

do I need a specific type of yeast to make sourdough bread?

I used a couple of teaspoons of pureed apple that I left to ferment for my last starter. It's going really strong now and I make a loaf every day from it. No yeast needed with sourdough (bonus!).

paperpens · 25/03/2020 05:05

I making this bread at the moment. Just waiting for the second prove.
So easy to make, probably a good one for the children to do too.

A very sad looking loaf of bread which didn't rise at all but secretly still tastes really nice so I have toasted some for breakfast.

MushroomTree · 25/03/2020 07:35

We did chocolate Victoria sponge filled with spiced apple and pear compote yesterday. I wanted to put chantilly cream in as well but DD doesn't like cream and we've got no room in the fridge for a large cake.
