What are you baking today?

Woke up at stupid o'clock and started a mental rummage through my cupboards and fridge. Have got up now leaving DP (who's 150 miles from elderly family and a bit down) in bed, and decided to make a lemon/orange drizzle cake. Haven't got a loaf tin but got something in remotely the right shape. Also only have duck eggs (as they were the last ones left when I last went shopping.) I will post a pic when it's ready....hope it's edible, don't fancy slinging out a load of perfectly good ingredients!
Anyone else baking today?

DH mentally equates home baking with affection. I can reduce him to a puddle of gratitude with a jam tart or some homemade biscuits Grin.

So, for a bit of home comfort, DD and I are making muffins this afternoon.
I’ll make an Italian vegetable pie with buttered garlic spinach, ricotta and eggs to use the oven heat. That’ll do for lunch tomorrow.

Any baking ideas to use a few plums and pears- have basic ingredients?. Not crumble please!

Foghead · 24/03/2020 13:51

We’ve got a couple of ripe bananas so we’re making chocolate banana cake.
@Alakazam8 plum and pear upside down cake

I've made a loaf of bread which was really nice!

I'd love an idiot proof biscuit recipe if anyone has one. I'm a good baker but shite at biscuits.

Peta11 · 24/03/2020 13:53

We made homemade pizzas ( for the DC,) and Za'taar ( for grownups )
for lunch!
Haven't had it in so long! X

Alakazam8 · 24/03/2020 13:54

Wow sounds brilliant- thanks Foghead. Couldn’t think with stressing over where to get food from next!

DorsetCamping · 24/03/2020 13:56

Random question...I've found some vanilla powder at the back of my cupboard. Can it be used in same way as essence?

RosieSunset · 24/03/2020 13:57

GF plantain bread. There were no bananas! It has coconut condensed milk in it too.

Yesterdayforgotten · 24/03/2020 14:08

Anybody know if strong bread flour can be used in place of plain flour?

Yesterdayforgotten · 24/03/2020 14:09

Alakazam8 sticky plum pudding? Pear upside down cake

Willow2017 · 24/03/2020 14:22

Going to try banana choc 'buns' as not enough over ripe bananas for a proper loaf.
DS2 is going to be baking bread later once schoolwork is done.

Made flapjacks the other day, all gone!

Works for scones if that helps.

Alakazam8 · 24/03/2020 14:27

Thanks for the ideas- will look for recipes for cakes to make tomorrow to use them up.

Yesterdayforgotten · 24/03/2020 14:48

@Willow2017 yes that does, thank you very much!

Luunaa · 24/03/2020 16:14

I managed to buy butter, granulated sugar, caster sugar and eggs today. And lemons. No flour to be seen though. So I have all the ingredients for an amazing lemon cake except bloody flour.

Sad
MrsPear · 24/03/2020 16:23

We made flapjacks - as I pointed out to h it is maths, reading comprehension and science rolled into one 🤣

PurpleBlueAnemone · 24/03/2020 16:23

DD made a Swiss roll today for food tech. It was absolutely lush.

fitflopqueen · 24/03/2020 16:33

Prepped two sourdough loaves today (am doing this 3 times/week)- now proving in Fridge and will bake one tomorrow morning, made about 40 small waffle type pancakes with discard. Half in freezer, remains for breakfast/snacks.
Made a chocolate cake yesterday - quarter left
Lemon drizzle 3 days ago.
Husband working from home - he has never eaten so well every lunchtime! 22 yr old son also working from home hence lots of bread/cake

Yesterdayforgotten · 24/03/2020 17:16

Managed to get butter, cocoa, vanilla essence, soft brown sugar, strong bread flour, dried fruit and a variety of nuts oh and eggs. Still yet to find plain flour and oats. Where are you all getting your oats? I have everything else in to male flapjacks

Yesterdayforgotten · 24/03/2020 17:16

Or make!

drspouse · 24/03/2020 19:23

It's a bit flat...

What are you baking today?
Qwertyguerty · 24/03/2020 19:26

Made peanut butter cookies, bliss!

Spam88 · 24/03/2020 19:28

@Yesterdayforgotten I haven't had any trouble getting oats in Lidl. The items that there are shortages of seem to vary with geography though!

H1978 · 24/03/2020 19:50

Had some apples sat in the basket for a week now so decided to use my limited baking skills to make eve’s pudding

gorgeous straight out of the oven with custard

Yesterdayforgotten · 24/03/2020 20:00

Really @Spam88 it must just be my area that have been cheekily stock piling them because I've been trying to get oats now for 2 weeks. Have tried asda, lidle and aldi and no luck.
