Woke up at stupid o'clock and started a mental rummage through my cupboards and fridge. Have got up now leaving DP (who's 150 miles from elderly family and a bit down) in bed, and decided to make a lemon/orange drizzle cake. Haven't got a loaf tin but got something in remotely the right shape. Also only have duck eggs (as they were the last ones left when I last went shopping.) I will post a pic when it's ready....hope it's edible, don't fancy slinging out a load of perfectly good ingredients!
Anyone else baking today?

We got a flour delivery from a local mill today. Worth having a look around.

mooboy · 31/03/2020 19:53

Just checked the local mill - they've shut due to Covid.

Yesterdayforgotten · 01/04/2020 10:41

I got my bread flour from Aldi if that helps anybody.

Just ordered some pizza flour on Amazon for my Ooni - time to open the pizzeria!

Cake of Bread in the oven today of the fruit variety, had to use a buttermilk substitute - milk and lemon juice, I'm so hungry, can't wait to try it!

PurpleBlueAnemone · 01/04/2020 15:36

About to start making the British Rail Gingerbread someone linked to at some point.

FuckThisWind · 01/04/2020 15:42

Cheese Scones today. With milk that was 12 days out of date yet surprisingly not off (you can still make scones with soured milk anyway - I am determined to waste nothing!)

@ivykaty44 where is the walnut crumbles recipe from?

Xiaoxiong · 01/04/2020 16:23

Made black bean and chorizo stew for dinner, so I'm baking feta-jalapeno cornbread to go alongside. Should be tasty, though annoyingly we have run out of fresh coriander to go on top

I managed to find strong white bread flour at my local fancy deli today! Only bought one bag to leave some for others but happy to get some flour at least.

PurpleBlueAnemone

It’s from one of the bake off books - probably the first.

I’ve made a Mary Berry lemon and poppy seed tray bake today...but added lime instead of a second lemon and I never ice as to sweet so just gently pour the juice over the hot cake - it’s delicate flavour and zingy with the lime

Fantastic looking cheese scones @FuckThisWind could I be cheeky and ask for the recipe if you dont mind? I am looking for a go to cheese scone recipe and yours look absolutely incredible and there's loads!

ivykaty44 · 01/04/2020 17:33

I can’t make fruit cake as we still have Christmas cake, which is getting better with age

Mominatrix · 01/04/2020 17:34

Not really baking, more assembling, but made a tiramisu with DS. I often have 2 egg whites for breakfast, so tiramisu was a good way to use up the saved egg yolks.

Thanks ivykaty44. I have now made a batch and can confirm that are really nice.
British Rail gingerbread in the oven. I put a tbsp cinnamon in by mistake so hopefully it'll still be edible.

Rapidly depleting batch of walnut crumbles.

FuckThisWind · 01/04/2020 19:02

@Yesterdayforgotten why thank you!
I googled the recipe this morning as I expected the milk to be off so was looking for a sour milk recipe.

It's this one. I added a little more than the recommended 100g of cheese (noted at the bottom of the recipe - the original recipe is for a plain scone) I also added a 1/4 teaspoon of mustard powder and a sprinkle of cheese on top of the scones.

If you like the walnut crumbles, you may like the prue Leith coffee buns, these cakes are not dry as so often I find cakes with walnuts

FuckThisWind · 01/04/2020 19:06

Ooh @Yesterdayforgotten I didn't have cream of tartar so I used a scant teaspoon of baking powder alongside the bicarb.

MadisonAvenue · 01/04/2020 19:13

Nothing, my son used the last of the flour making brownies on Monday.

I had flour in my Tesco basket when I finalised my order at 11.45 last night and was hopeful it’d be delivered today, the delivery came just after 9am and it was already out of stock.

Yesterdayforgotten · 01/04/2020 19:34

@FuckThisWind thank you so much for posting the recipe and handy to know as I never have cream of tartar either. That's very kind of you; they are my next baking project! I hope they turn out as nice as yours have! Smile

These photos are all lovely! I

You seem like the people to ask Smile does anyone have any ideas what I can do with a tub of double cream (two days out of sell by but smells/tastes fine).

Profiteroles are beyond my abilities Grin and we already have a homemade Victoria Sponge cake.

mooboy · 02/04/2020 12:57

Add it to a savory sauce - mushroom, or tomato, peppercorn...or add it to a soup.
Chocolate mousse. Toffee sauce. Toffee! Fudge...bit of a theme. Lemon posset. Custard, ice cream. Fresh cream filling for a victoria sponge.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 02/04/2020 14:14

Thank you mooboy I now want to make all of those things Grin

Ice cream is a very good idea. I have a recipe that makes fantastic Millies style cookies so I am going to make cookie dough ice cream.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 02/04/2020 14:16

Actually that will work really well as I am making meringues tomorrow so ice cream is a good use for the egg yolks! My family think it's like Christmas in our house Grin

InTheShadowOfTheMushroomCloud · 02/04/2020 16:08

I have eaten half a tub of cookie dough ice cream....and I don't give a shit.
