I'll start with one that drives me crackers, Louboutin.

Is it -
LOO-boo-tan

Loo-BOO-tan
or
Loo-Boo-TAN

Please put me out of my misery!
(As you might have guessed, they're not in my price range however it's pronounced.)

iklboo · 08/03/2020 21:05

Yo-sem-itty

diamonddandelions · 08/03/2020 21:07

Yes, it's chumley, just thought I'd throw it in the pot.

One I’m always unsure, of whilst we are on beauty/perfume brands, is Issey Miyake. ????

Sked Yule = US

I love this thread.

Lat-Tay for me

4OClockRock · 08/03/2020 21:18

Shed-Yule, DEFINITELY! 'Sked-Yule' drives me nuts!

I also love Left-tenant rather than Loo-tenant for Lieutenant but mainly because the former is so clearly, wonderfully crackers!

Whatisthisfuckery · 08/03/2020 21:20

I never know how to pronounce:

Synecdoche

Hegemony

Estrella. The Spanish woman in the pub told me you don’t pronounce the L, but then someone else said when they went to Spain they did so I’m stumped.

Fortunately the first two don’t come up in conversation very often.

iklboo · 08/03/2020 21:21

I wonder if the English started saying LEFT-tenant to piss off the French? Grin

PuppyMonkey · 08/03/2020 21:22

Carole has an emphasis on the second syllable.

What now? Confused

4OClockRock · 08/03/2020 21:24

Sin-ec-doh-key, I think?

I had to make such an effort to learn that one after I made a tit of myself pronouncing it incorrectly in a seminar at university (I'd only ever seen it written, not heard it said!)

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 08/03/2020 21:24

YappityYapYap · 08/03/2020 21:46

Schedule is meant to be pronounced Sked-yul. The Americans have it right as it's a Greek word and should have a K sound to it. I pronounce it Sked-yul, so does everyone else I know! I've never heard anyone say shed-yul

drspouse · 08/03/2020 21:47

The double L in Estrella is a y.
So you do pronounce it, it just isn't an L.

By the way, am I allowed to bash anyone over the head who says "choritso" or "choreezo"?
