I'll start with one that drives me crackers, Louboutin.

Is it -
LOO-boo-tan

Loo-BOO-tan
or
Loo-Boo-TAN

Please put me out of my misery!
(As you might have guessed, they're not in my price range however it's pronounced.)

The best wtf pronunciation of all time, I learnt from here :

The surname Featherstonhaugh

crapette · 08/03/2020 18:50

I think l'Occitane is taken from Occitanie which is a region of France and/or the Occitan language. Many of the towns/streets have their name in French and in Occitan.

As previous posters have said, the cs are pronounced like ks.

Treeofheaven · 08/03/2020 19:01

This is a bit odd but how do you pronounce anesthetic?
I've always said anes-thetic but my dh says ane-stetic

Crapette I'm really confused about l'Occitane; the company certainly say it's pronounced "Lox see tan". But where my inlaws live in southern france the word "Occitan" is pronounced more like "Ock ee tan" with a much harder k sound in the middle. Is that just a regional thing? Or the difference between French pronunciation and Occitan pronunciation?

Your DH is wrong, and needs telling [grin]@Treeofheaven

The name St. John? Someone I know pronounces it sin Jin and I find this really odd!
Also ibuprofen, I say eye-boo-pro-fin but at the hospital the other day they said eye-bru-pro-feb (hope that made sense lol)

Soubriquet · 08/03/2020 19:15

Somethings are just weird

Like locally we have cowbit

Not pronounced like it looks

It’s actually pronounced cubbit

Very · 08/03/2020 19:16

My friend works in a senior role in the champagne industry and say Moet (et Chandon) is pronounced Mo-ette.

lalafafa · 08/03/2020 19:25

JKScot4 · 08/03/2020 19:25

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit
I have a DD Eilidh; it’s aa-lay, gaelic for Helen.

1066vegan · 08/03/2020 19:27

@gingajewel I'm pretty sure StJohn is pronounced Sin-jun, with the emphasis on the first syllable.

I think that's how I've heard it pronounced when I've watched adaptations of Jane Eyre.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 08/03/2020 19:27

St. John (as a first name) is correctly pronounced 'sinjin' and Moet is correctly pronounced 'mo-et' with a hard 't' (as Mr Moet was Belgian, not French).

Wonkybanana · 08/03/2020 19:34

Hermes was the Greek god of just about everything, including a protector of roads and a deliverer (of souls to the afterlife!)

He was also known as the trickster of the gods. Which seems appropriate when you've waited in for a delivery that hasn't arrived.

I'm no wiser on Louboutin though - it seems all three pronunciations are used somewhere by somebody!

Sancerre

The wine. I really wanted to order in a restaurant but didn’t know how to say it

Is it s-on-sare

Flymetothetoon · 08/03/2020 19:40

Moët should be pronounced mwet

spiderlight · 08/03/2020 19:45

A stupid one, probably - is Carole pronounced the same as Carol? I always read it as Ca-roll, to rhyme with mole, but I don't think that's right.
