I'll start with one that drives me crackers, Louboutin.

Is it -
LOO-boo-tan

Loo-BOO-tan
or
Loo-Boo-TAN

Please put me out of my misery!
(As you might have guessed, they're not in my price range however it's pronounced.)

@WhippetyStourie
Agreed, I don’t anyone who pronounces it with a harsh AYE LEE, likewise ceilidh isn’t a harsh LEE, rhyming with Bailey is an excellent description, this is how my garlic speaking grandfather pronounced it as it was his wives name!

PeridotPassion · 08/03/2020 22:30

Anyone mentioned hyperbole?

For years I said it as hyper-bowl.

Discovered at the age of 30+ it was hi-per-boh-lee.

CocoLoco87 · 08/03/2020 22:31

That should probably be more like Carra-be-an vs Carrib-e-an

GreyishDays · 08/03/2020 22:36

I know an Ay Lee

And I’ve never heard Cay lay, it’s Cay lee in my bit of Scotland.

Wonkybanana · 08/03/2020 22:38

Clarins = kla - ranz

I've never been entirely sure about that one. But they were running radio ads for one of their new serums, and the ad was Kla - rins (rins as in pins). So I assumed that either that was the correct pronunciation, or that they'd got fed up of trying to educate the British. (I tended to go for the first explanation though.)

I recently learnt that the brand Loewe is pronounced low er vay, the v sound because the founder was German, despite it being a Spanish brand. I was not expecting that.

Segue is still the one I find hard to wrap my brain around.

iklboo · 08/03/2020 23:05

Blackley in Manchester is pronounced Blakely

Likethebattle · 08/03/2020 23:12

I had no idea how to say ‘’minutiae’ until I heard a colleague say it. I had to ask an Irish friend how to say Aoife, it was a main character in a book and I had no idea.
The proper way to say ‘Menzies’ in Scotland is ‘Ming-is’ like Ming-is Campbell. @kierenthecommunity it’s pronounced ‘Cul-ain’ like rain not ‘cul-een’, I’ve lived in Ayrshire my whole life.

The pronunciation of Catriona annoys me when people say ‘cat-ray-ona’ no it’s ‘cat-teens’ I heard a woman with a very well to do accent saying ‘yes, Cat-ray-Ona is now at university...’ no it doesn’t make you sound posh it just makes you sound stupid!

Likethebattle · 08/03/2020 23:14

@lowlandLucky my mum is from ‘tarbowtin’ lol

RoomR0613 · 08/03/2020 23:37

I once had to tell several colleagues how to pronounce Cockburn (Cobern). I was quite surprised that despite a range of ages it was the first any of them had heard of it. I actually had to google it for them to prove I wasn't taking the piss.

1066vegan · 09/03/2020 00:00

@ShrimpSymphony. I'm pretty sure that Hebe is pronounced Heebee.

DesLynamsMoustache · 09/03/2020 00:13

Ah my poor English DH gets frequently bamboozled up here by things that sound nothing like they're spelled:

Garioch - Gee-ree (hard G)
Findochty- Fin-ech-ty
The surname Tough - Tew-ch (as in loch)
Strachan - Strawn
Finzean - Fingin

He's still discovering new ones and comes home from work muttering about them Grin
