I'll start with one that drives me crackers, Louboutin.

Is it -
LOO-boo-tan

Loo-BOO-tan
or
Loo-Boo-TAN

Please put me out of my misery!
(As you might have guessed, they're not in my price range however it's pronounced.)

DS watch Longines he says its Lon-gins, I’m not convinced.

sageandroses · 10/03/2020 10:35

@BuzzShitbagBobbly @Clangus00

It's actually Ell-wez. My friend is related to him.

IntermittentParps · 10/03/2020 11:42

I know "miss-led" but I swear I used to use/know/head "myzled" - anyone else?

I think misled has always been said mis-LED, but every time I read it written down it goes 'mizzled' in my head.

L'Occitane: the 'French' as in standard French way is probably as Potato says, but the Occitan pronunciation is as the company themselves have it: Loxxitan. Makes sense seeing as it's an Occitan company (or branded as such, anyway).

@goingtotown it's lawn-djeen (that 'dj' is like our 'dge' in ledge)

notanotherjigsawpiece · 10/03/2020 14:38

Oh and it's St Louie (the city), not St Lewis

Are you sure? We did a road trip in USA last year including St Louis, and everyone we met including the locals referred to it as St Lewis

Dandelion1993 · 10/03/2020 14:43

Louboutin - le boo ton

Smartanimal · 10/03/2020 14:47

Taittinger. I know how to pronounce it but so many people get this wrong it cracks me up.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 10/03/2020 15:35

Sri Lanka anyone? I keep hearing "shree"

crapette · 10/03/2020 16:51

Louisville is an interesting one.

We have a fridge magnet from there and it lists 5 options for how to say it.

SenecaFallsRedux · 10/03/2020 17:16

I say LOU-uh-vul. I'm not from Kentucky, but I am a Southerner.

By the way, St Louis is pronounced St. Lewis by people who live there. It's also the most common pronunciation in the US, although a few people say St. Louie.

QueenOfOversharing · 10/03/2020 17:17

I lived in Chicago heard it pronounced St Lewis.

QueenOfOversharing · 10/03/2020 17:18

Can we have Bostonians leave voice notes of them saying "park my car"? Please!!!

crapette · 10/03/2020 17:22

Magnet says:

Looavul
Luhvul
Loueville
Looaville
Looeyville

Most people we met said Luhvul.

We also went to St Louis and everyone said St Lewis

AngeloMysterioso · 10/03/2020 18:49

I’ve always pronounced ethereal as eth- eerie -ul, to rhyme with bacterial

Loewe is L’ wev -ay

Givenchy- zheev- on -shee

drspouse · 10/03/2020 19:54

Interesting, I guess it's probably North Easterners or West Coast types I've heard mispronounce St Louis then.

MrsSiba · 10/03/2020 20:03

Isn't the film title pronounced St Lewis

Meet me in St Lewis. Was referenced in the Sex and City.

MrsSiba · 10/03/2020 20:05

Agh pressed too soon

Film is Meet Me In St Louis

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 10/03/2020 20:09

it's lawn-djeen (that 'dj' is like our 'dge' in ledge)

I've scrolled up a bit but I can't find what this is referring to, and ironically, saying "lawn-djeen" out loud hasn't helped identify it either!

Clymene · 10/03/2020 20:13

Longines I think!

It's not lawn, it's long.

And I'm half french too Wink

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 10/03/2020 20:22

Oh!! Grin

I'd say that was long-zheen, not djeen - softer?

AngeloMysterioso · 10/03/2020 20:55

I thought it was Lon -zheen

Andylion · 10/03/2020 21:42

Isn't the film title pronounced St Lewis

The trailer calls the movie "Meet Me in St. Lewis" but the song at the end of the trailer is meet Me in St. Lewey, Lewey." Confused

drspouse · 10/03/2020 22:36

Apparently it's an old fashioned pronunciation

www.quora.com/Why-do-Americans-pronounce-the-last-S-in-St-Louis-but-not-in-Des-Moines

IntermittentParps · 11/03/2020 09:29

I thought Des Moines DID have both its final 's's pronounced ie 'Des' like Des Lynam and 'Moines' to rhyme with 'coins'?

MrsMcKitty · 11/03/2020 09:45

How is Arkansas pronounced? Is it Ark an saw or Ar kansas?
