Been geeking this morning on the number of flights having to go around

Noticed several Gatwick and Luton flights diverting to Stanstead

Check out DI7018 JFK- Gatwick

Two attempts at Gatwick, seemed to be heading for Stanstead, but now the Norwegian airlines crew seem to be taking everyone home with them!

I'm watching Norwegian NRS6YA from LAX. Had 2 aborted landings at LGW, thought he was going in for a 3rd but he didn't turn in and started to climb. Is now at 20,000ft over Colchester! Can't work out where he's going, but looks to be giving up on the UK.

GoBackToPartyCity · 09/02/2020 12:02

I’m flying into Manchester these evening at about 5pm. I’m terrified of flying at the best of times so I think I’m going to need dragging onto that plane!

NotYourTypicalNerd · 09/02/2020 12:04

How do you know if they have aborted landings, please?

Also, what does it mean when there is no call sign on a plane?

NotYourTypicalNerd · 09/02/2020 12:07

Also how can you tell their altitude?

BabbleBee · 09/02/2020 12:10

Big Jet TV is back. I repeat. Big Jet TV is back.

notangelinajolie · 09/02/2020 12:13

Ooh one if my favourite things to do on a Sunday. I can't get on Flight Radar right now my internet is being v slow Sad. I'm literally a stones throw from Manchester Airport and I can hear planes overhead. Don't know if it's the same one that keeps going round in circles or lots of different ones. I can usually see them but visibility is crap today.

cricketmum84 · 09/02/2020 12:17

I would actually cry if I was on EK17 Dubai to Manchester. It's just aborted landing again!

chipsandpeas · 09/02/2020 12:18

U22050 /EZY76WJ easyJet is having a bit of a detour

DropZoneOne · 09/02/2020 12:20

@notyourtypicalnerd

If you click on the plane, it shows altitude and speed on the right, and their route line. So you can see them lining up to land eg at Gatwick, they are coming in from the right over East Grinstead. Follow them in a lovely straight line to the airport, then watch the altitude go up and the plane turn left - aborted landing.

I'm a few miles south and it's got a lot windier over the past 30 minutes, some big gusts now.

Ursaminor · 09/02/2020 12:21

I think EK17 will divert now - maybe to Glasgow.

AlphaVTango · 09/02/2020 12:27

Had to go out, playing catch up now. Looks like EK17 is heading south, possibly BHX?

BabbleBee · 09/02/2020 12:27

I’m on the south coast and we’ve been down to the beach - it is beautifully crazy down there!

Katinski · 09/02/2020 12:31

@chomalungma - the Talisker will be cracked once the planes are safely downWink
Which actually happened to me once. Sadly not Talisker but we all gave the pilot a big clap and he ordered free drinks for everyoneGin

catzrulz · 09/02/2020 12:32

Oh my, just looked at FR for the first time. I thought that's not too bad around Heathrow ..... then I enlarged the picture!
I was sure 2 were on course for each other 🙈

OliviaBenson · 09/02/2020 12:37

EK17 possibly going to Amsterdam now?

cricketmum84 · 09/02/2020 12:38

I would guess at Amsterdam for EK17. Unless he turns and comes into LHR?

TheLongDarkBreakfastTime · 09/02/2020 12:39

Did anyone see the plane hat just landed at Heathrow in Big Jet TV? I couldn’t tell what happened but from the commentary something interesting did!

Ursaminor · 09/02/2020 12:39

Yes I think EK17 is off to Schipol. And Big Jet TV - wow! Just watched that Etihad A380 land - just wow.

notimagain · 09/02/2020 12:39

Jasper...

"Does anyone know how it is decided which planes will divert and which will keep going around? Do some divert without even trying? Is there a max number of attempts you can make before you go or is it based on how much fuel you have left? Presumably if you go around too many time then it must have a knock on affect on where you can divert to?"

Bit late in replying but it's generally down to fuel and also not scaring the passengers too much. To that end crews will have set out last night/this AM from wherever with more than enough fuel to have several goes at an approach into e.g; Gatwick, and then if needed divert to their planned "alternate"airport - somewhere with a suitable forecast. At arrival at e.g; Gatwick if the wind was outside limits they'd hold, if it went out of limits on the approach, or it simply didn't look right in the last few feet they'd go around. If you arrive somewhere and the wind is patently not going to be in limits for the forseeeable future then, yes, you can divert without even trying.

Many companies have a rule about only doing a limited number of approaches (e.g. 2 or 3) before diverting...

But fundamentally as you guessed fuel under pins all this is and on days like today people will have been watching their fuel carefully to make sure they kept all their options open.

chillichutneysarnie · 09/02/2020 12:40

DY4439 from Gothenburg to Gatwick seems to be heading right back to Sweden!

NotYourTypicalNerd · 09/02/2020 12:46

The wind must have dropped as Heathrow is getting them down quite quickly now.

iMatter · 09/02/2020 12:46

The Air Algeria flight trying to get into Heathrow has been all over the place
