Been geeking this morning on the number of flights having to go around

Noticed several Gatwick and Luton flights diverting to Stanstead

Check out DI7018 JFK- Gatwick

Two attempts at Gatwick, seemed to be heading for Stanstead, but now the Norwegian airlines crew seem to be taking everyone home with them!

I can't believe I've spent most of this afternoon watching flights!

Is Gatwick still operational? I can't see any flights in or out.

@Cherryblossomandcornflakes I really hope that you safely make your flight soon and the situation remains calm there, not a lot coming in or out looking on FR24 for Gatwick and a lot of planes and crew displaced, this is going to take a while to resolve.

NotYourTypicalNerd · 09/02/2020 17:23

I still cant see where they say the diversion destination is?

Click on the plane again and it will show the diverted destination.

sonjadog · 09/02/2020 17:29

Are all flights in and out of Gatwick now cancelled? I can't see any on FR.

CallmeAngelina · 09/02/2020 17:32

Did we ever discover what those grey blocks are?

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 09/02/2020 17:33

I've just got a bit giddy at one I've been tracking and seemed to not be able to land looked like it was going to come past here, so looked outside and there it was Grin

notimagain · 09/02/2020 17:35

"Can someone explain why they would do a 'touch and go' though?"

Given today's weather I'd guess either because they were drifting towards the runway edge or they failed to touch down before the end of the Touch down zone...(designated on the runway by paint markings and lights) and instead touched down "long" ... On a wet runway the stopping distance can be quite critical and if you don't get the aircraft down in the right place and at the right speed there's a risk you will be unable to bring the thing to the halt before the far end...it such circumstances it is then considered safer to apply full power and fly the aircraft off again for another go.

AngelOfDeathNix · 09/02/2020 17:40

@CallmeAngelina the grey blocks are ground vehicles

cologne4711 · 09/02/2020 17:41

You'd need to do that in Jersey because if you miss the end of the runway coming in across the island you land in the sea!

Cherryblossomandcornflakes · 09/02/2020 17:41

EasyJet have cancelled all their flights now and taken all their passengers to Area 51 (gate 51 actually!). So there is finally a little bit of organisation. We are still waiting to hear about our flight but I’m not hopeful. But it’s peaceful now, I’ve got food and water and I’m very comfortable!

Cherryblossomandcornflakes · 09/02/2020 17:42

*all flights from Gatwick I mean

AngelOfDeathNix · 09/02/2020 17:43

Glad things have settled, where are you trying to fly to Cherry?

smashstore · 09/02/2020 17:43

Gatwick's quiet because all the shorthairs are due and they have been cancelled, mainly a knock on effect from earlier today.

smashstore · 09/02/2020 17:44

OMG shortHAULS not hairs Blush

Planes, not cats Grin

Cherryblossomandcornflakes · 09/02/2020 17:47

It’s a TUI flight to Sal.

sm40 · 09/02/2020 17:48

The Doha flight coming into
Lhr now seems to gone on a very scenic route, 2 attempts and a trip to Manchester!

EnormousDormouse · 09/02/2020 17:54

My ATC friend put me on to Big Jet TV a while back - lovely that there is now a Mumsnet thread.
Even my flight engineer friends now call me a nerd as we often sit outside at a restaurant under the flight path of our local airport. They tell me what the aircraft is and I have my phone out on FR24 telling them where it's going. We know how to live. Grin

A few landing at Heathrow now.

Gatwick is a ghost town, there is a flight coming in in about 15 minutes, see if it lands.

AngelOfDeathNix · 09/02/2020 18:08

Looks like an Emirates flight going to attempt Gatwick in 10ish minutes

Sexnotgender · 09/02/2020 18:08

Yip, it’s an A380.

AngelOfDeathNix · 09/02/2020 18:13

BA232 having a second attempt at landing at Heathrow

edgewater · 09/02/2020 18:15

EK9 is going to try Gatwick.

windymillersmill · 09/02/2020 18:15

I saw an A380 land at Heathrow earlier, the pilot was very firmly getting it down, it'd barely crossed the perimeter fence before it was down. I hate landing and taking off so I love the cameras on the Emirates A380 as you can watch the landing and taking off, much better as it stopped me worrying that we were going to go off the end of the runway which was always my concern - I was amazed to see just how much runway they had left, my vision of stopping 2 feet from the end was ridiculous!

ElloBrian · 09/02/2020 18:16

Looks like City is reopening - there’s a flight from the Isle of Man coming in now. City is impossible in almost any wind so that’s a sign things are returning to normal.
