Been geeking this morning on the number of flights having to go around

Noticed several Gatwick and Luton flights diverting to Stanstead

Check out DI7018 JFK- Gatwick

Two attempts at Gatwick, seemed to be heading for Stanstead, but now the Norwegian airlines crew seem to be taking everyone home with them!

Found it! Odd.

happycamper11 · 09/02/2020 16:18

Yes I've been watching out if interest. Not much seems to be going on at Gatwick, sine landing at MAN instead. Edinburgh seems ok, even the little propeller planes, though a lot of circling going on

dustibooks · 09/02/2020 16:19

Looking-out-of-the-window weather report from my house near Luton: wind has died down a lot to just blustery and the sun has just come out. So I reckon it will be all systems go at LTN shortly.

BA1487 @edgewater

edgewater · 09/02/2020 16:20

Thanks Alpha. Looks like it’s en route back to Glasgow!

CallmeAngelina · 09/02/2020 16:20

At what point do they decide that a delayed flight will be cancelled?

alphasox · 09/02/2020 16:20

Looks like they’re just going back to Glasgow???

CallmeAngelina · 09/02/2020 16:21

Paphos has just landed at Stansted.

OliviaBenson · 09/02/2020 16:24

Flight radar says it's been diverted to Newcastle!

NuttyCluster · 09/02/2020 16:26

BA1487 diverted to Newcastle

edgewater · 09/02/2020 16:26

What a useless diversion.

AngelOfDeathNix · 09/02/2020 16:33

Another aborted attempt at Gatwick, the conditions at Heathrow are horrendous, how anything is getting down is beyond me

BIWI · 09/02/2020 16:37

OMG this is addictive!

Can someone explain why they would do a 'touch and go' though?

wineoclockthanks · 09/02/2020 16:50

Looks like Venice going to try at Gatwick, seems to be the only one though

Gottheteeshirtandlostit · 09/02/2020 16:53

I think that's Venice's second shot at Gatwick..

ElloBrian · 09/02/2020 16:54

One of the things I love about FR24 is snooping on all the private jet activity. Someone has just flown from Inverness to Paris !

AngelOfDeathNix · 09/02/2020 16:57

Second shot Venice flight to come into Gatwick.

Watching the live feed at Heathrow, any idea what the lag is on it? Just seen the Qatar flight have a second aborted attempt there, but not showing on FR24.

edgewater · 09/02/2020 16:58

Come on Venice!

Cherryblossomandcornflakes · 09/02/2020 16:58

I've been in Gatwick since 11am, our flight should have left at 1pm, new departure time of 730pm. Been following flight radar all day which has kept me busy! Terminal is very overcrowded, there's many cancelled flights (40, 50?) and literally thousands of people queuing for ONE information desk. Everyone understands delays and cancellations because of the weather but the airport could do a lot more to help. The police are now here to help crowd control.

AngelOfDeathNix · 09/02/2020 17:00

Yay BA2589 is down at Gatwick!

wineoclockthanks · 09/02/2020 17:02

Yay, well done Venice.

Hope you get away Ok later @Cherryblossomandcornflakes

exexpat · 09/02/2020 17:09

I'm just watching an Are Lingus plane coming round for a second try at Bristol, by the look of it, and feeling very sorry for all the people on planes going through aborted landings today. I was once on a plane trying to land in Tokyo just before a typhoon hit, and the last-few-seconds aborted landing was one of the scariest moments of my life. We got down (rather bumpily) at the second attempt, luckily, as it was the end of a long-haul flight and I'm not sure how far it could have diverted.

AngelOfDeathNix · 09/02/2020 17:10

@BIWI a touch and go could be for a number of reasons:

An unstable approach or landing, resulting from pilot error, excessive cross or tail winds, touching down too fast or bouncing

A vehicle or aircraft entering the runway

An instruction from Air Traffic Control

Wrong aircraft configuration (i.e. the pilots haven’t selected the flaps fully down, which would inhibit braking action)

Brakes are not working correctly (or auto brakes are required, but have no been selected on)

I suspect it's the first option for most of the ones seen today. If the pilot cannot keep it steady on the runway, it's safer to take off again.

bluerad · 09/02/2020 17:15

I'm fascinated by this thread. Definitely going to read all pages when I have time

ElloBrian · 09/02/2020 17:17

Splendid isolation around Gatwick now - nothing moving at all (apart from a private jet from Marseille which seems to be en route to London).
