Been geeking this morning on the number of flights having to go around

Noticed several Gatwick and Luton flights diverting to Stanstead

Check out DI7018 JFK- Gatwick

Two attempts at Gatwick, seemed to be heading for Stanstead, but now the Norwegian airlines crew seem to be taking everyone home with them!

All of my aviation expertise comes from many hours of Air Crash Investigation Grin and I was wondering, isn’t there a limit on the number of go arounds you can do? Are there any hard and fast rules or is it at the captain’s discretion? I’m sure I once watched an episode set in the UK (a small plane from the IOM going to NI or the ROI) which crashed on its third attempt after three go arounds. The pilots were under massive pressure to get on the ground no matter what, because the company were skint and couldn’t afford to shoulder the costs of a divert.

CallmeAngelina · 09/02/2020 14:28

Don't think anything's landing at Luton at all now. All the planes on the app are passing overhead.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 09/02/2020 14:29

@PollyMorph
Is anyone else following LA8084 from Sau Paolo? Its has had a few attempts at landing in London and now seems to be flying to France

Me! I was watching it get within a few thousand of landing at London, kept attempting and now seem to have given up and are off to France instead!
I'm strangely nervous for it, bet the people on board are like "get me the * home, where the hell am I now" lol

The trains are up the creek too, mind you. Everything out of Euston is either very delayed or cancelled altogether.

PollyMorph · 09/02/2020 14:32

I know, I am starting to get concerned as they are back up to 37000ft- I would have thought that that would indicate it wont land soon. I wonder where they will end up?

TobyeBella · 09/02/2020 14:33

There's also a flight from Botoga heading out onto the continent too.

lubeybooby · 09/02/2020 14:33

the poor people on this one that was supposed to land gatwick 10.40am and still going www.flightradar24.com/EZY8402/23ce8a8a

MyBootsAreMuddy · 09/02/2020 14:33

We are watching the LA8084 Sau Paolo to Heathrow that appears to have given up trying to land and is now over france, our guess is a landing in Nantes.

Michellebops · 09/02/2020 14:35

Love this thread. Flightradar24 spotter too.
I'm in Glasgow and watched the Emirates circle last night.

Saw another low one this morning landing in Glasgow but that was after a number of attempts to land in Manchester 😳

snowballer · 09/02/2020 14:36

Have lost my entire morning and afternoon so far to Big Jet TV so thanks to the PP that first mentioned it! Can't tear myself away and DH thinks I'm nuts

Freeshavocado · 09/02/2020 14:37

For those asking the Qantas QF10 flight had a potential air strike as it took off from LHR, it circled for an hour over London then they brought it in to land which it did safely and there didn't appear to be any damage from an air strike so it will probably be leaving again soon.

lyralalala · 09/02/2020 14:37

@Haworthia I think it’s pilots discretion. There was lots this morning diverting after two attempts, but one landed on its fourth attempt

The geezer on Big Jet TV is hilarious. “Easy son, get it dahn!”

wineoclockthanks · 09/02/2020 14:38

Anyone else watching the Kiev freight Au17LM to Gatwick, justbanking after an aborted attempt to land

Freeshavocado · 09/02/2020 14:38

Airlines also have different policies on attempting landings I know emirates rule is to only attempt twice before diverting.

Newcatmum · 09/02/2020 14:39

and I was wondering, isn’t there a limit on the number of go arounds you can do?

They guy filming said earlier that the maximum number is 3 then they will be diverted elsewhere.

ElloBrian · 09/02/2020 14:40

Wineoclock - yes - it seems to be the only plane trying to get into Gatwick that I can see ... none others on the approach at all - ?

chomalungma · 09/02/2020 14:41

Touch and Go at LHR

Freeshavocado · 09/02/2020 14:41

BA just had a touch and go, it looked like it got down fine but obviously not!

celtiethree · 09/02/2020 14:41

Just found this thread!! Not much in and out of Scottish airports but U23385 has tried to land once is now circling round for the third time

squashyhat · 09/02/2020 14:41

woohoo!

wineoclockthanks · 09/02/2020 14:42

We're not far from Gatwick and the gusts are so strong

Newcatmum · 09/02/2020 14:42

Thanks those who have answered about the tail strike I hadn't realised it took off from Heathrow and circled I thought it had been a touch and go. Think I just missed a touch and go while typing this message!

Haworthia · 09/02/2020 14:43

Whoa. I was just thinking that BA was going to need some new tyres and then it went for the go around. Poor passengers!

Newcatmum · 09/02/2020 14:44

Ooooh didn't realise I could rewind on YouTube live Grin
