What is a luxury item you would never buy, regardless of your ability to afford it?

AgeLikeWine Me too, and I doubt the people who make the £300 t shirts get paid any more. I'd love to be able to get clothes made to measure by a seamstress instead. At least I'd know where the cash was going.

noriim · 10/05/2020 23:09

Pretty much everything on this thread, but I would get:

2nd home (or even 3rd) (better 1st home than I have too!)
Swimming pool
Nice car
Expensive haircuts
A housekeeper/cleaner/gardener/cook/pool boy Smile

MrsAvocet · 10/05/2020 23:48

Much the same as most on here.
Personalised number plates.....just why? I honestly can't understand the appeal
I don't wear jewellery at all so wouldn't bother with that, and I would never buy really expensive shoes, clothes and bags. I'd probably buy more costly ones than I do now, but I would spend hundreds rather than thousands.
I don't drink alcohol so would have no interest in expensive booze and a lot of gourmet food doesn't particularly appeal to me much. I wouldn't buy super expensive hifi equipment either. I love music and would like better than we currently have, but we've got friends whose turntable cost twice as much as my car and I honestly can't tell the difference between that and other more modest equipment. I think there comes a point where your ears become the limiting factor and you are just paying for the name.
I don't think I'd want a holiday home either. I'd rather travel to different places and rent somewhere than go back to the same place repeatedly. Though I suppose it depends exactly how rich we are talking. If I had enough money to buy a number of houses, and time to visit them, that would be different, but I wouldn't want to be tied to one holiday destination. My in laws have a holiday home in Europe and they've spent pretty much the whole summer there every year for the last 30 or so years. It is a very nice place and they love it ...but its not for me. There's too much of the world that I haven't seen yet and I get bored easily.

The80sweregreat · 11/05/2020 17:04

I hate jewellery and posh handbags and fussy clothes so I wouldn't bother with any of that!

Gobbolinocat · 11/05/2020 17:25

Designer handbags and shoes. I have adore pretty things, but I couldn't ever buy a birkin bag.

Stuff like that.

georgialondon · 11/05/2020 17:38

Helicopter

Dowser · 11/05/2020 18:24

I’ve had the big house with swimming pool, the country cottage, the place in Brittany.
Didn’t make me any happier.
Much prefer being healthy and being with the right person .
That’s where happiness lies.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 11/05/2020 18:25

Fur

lazylinguist · 11/05/2020 18:44

Designer handbags, shoes and clothes, expensive jewellery. Top end make-up or skincare (I don't believe it's any better than the cheap stuff). Probably not an expensive car either, and certainly not a personalised number plate (baffling!).

If I were loaded, I'd spend my money on travelling, food and my house (or houses Grin).

lazylinguist · 11/05/2020 18:47

Dowser - presumably some people are healthy, happy, with the right person and have the big house with the swimming pool, the country cottage and the place in Brittany though! It's not necessarily an either/or.

cheeseychovolate · 11/05/2020 19:01

Designer bag

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 11/05/2020 19:43

A Rolls or Bentley 4wd. You might just as well tattoo "fuckwitted noove" on your forehead.

pussycatinboots · 11/05/2020 19:43

A Bentley. I'd rather save up for a Rolls Royce Grin

The80sweregreat · 11/05/2020 20:04

A rolls ! They are impressive.
I'd probably buy a sports car with a lotto win then discover I can't actually get in or out of it that well and chop it in for a fatter bigger car! More Space!

Bedsheets4knickers · 11/05/2020 20:22

These . Why oh why do people buy these . The are vile !

Thelnebriati · 12/05/2020 11:11

Sock shoes? you see them for sale second hand on Ebay with the sock part all stretched out Envy

YouAndMeAndTheDevilMakesThree · 12/05/2020 11:13

Designer handbag.

In fact, most designer label items. Especially ones with big logos. I just don't get it.

popcorndiva · 12/05/2020 11:14

Anything to do with fur
Things which are overally monogrammed. I don't mind one but not covering the whole bag/ top etc

Bojohair · 12/05/2020 11:15

@lazylinguist I agree that it’s possible to have all of that too. Hell, even a high earning husband who is not shagging his secretary.

I like the posts on here from people who are owning that they love things that other people find tacky.

Blingismything · 12/05/2020 11:16

Cosmetic procedures.
Boat of any description.
Home cinema.

Bojohair · 12/05/2020 11:16

Not fur though, that is not funny or negotiable to me.

Crimeismymiddlename · 12/05/2020 11:18

Dishwasher-never had one, don’t see the point.
Alexa device-would never use as only listen to the radio.
Peloton-would love one, but would use it for a week then go back to the gym.

Difficultcustomer · 12/05/2020 11:29

Boat
Fur, though still hypocritical because I buy leather shoes/bags
Expensive carpet, especially in a light colour
Jewellery - I’d be too worried about losing it even if I could afford to just replace
Would buy
Designer bag or clothes, if they fit really well/were just right

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 12/05/2020 11:29

Jewellery or a stupidly expensive watch. I don't wear jewellery much and when I do it's fake (gold plated though because of allergies) because then I don't need to sort out insurance or worry about it falling off and losing it.

A long time ago when I was living a different life I spent a lot of time with people who were earning a lot, and they were competitive about who had the best watch. Some were spending over £10K on a watch (back in the late 90s, although it's still a lot now). And I never got it, they didn't look much different to a cheap watch, and they certainly didn't tell the time any better.

I would spend money on things that are better than the cheaper version in some way, eg business class/first class air tickets to increase comfort on a long haul flight. At the moment I buy 'better' when I can afford it, eg I have found that Miele are reliable and last longer so I pay more up front but it probably works out the same cost over time as a less reliable item that needs to be fixed and/or replaced.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 12/05/2020 11:44

Hotel rooms....i love staying away from home but i could never spend hundreds on one night in a hotel.....im happy with a Travelodge or Premier Inn...as long as they are clean and comfy what else do you need....especially if you are arriving late and going straight to bed.
