What is a luxury item you would never buy, regardless of your ability to afford it?

i would say a sports car , just want one that works.

OP posts:

A yacht as I don’t like sailing.

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 01/02/2020 09:33

Boat - I get terrible sea sickness. Would be hell.

A car with gull wing doors, how do you get out if you park in a car park next to another car?

Fizzypoo · 01/02/2020 09:34

A Dyson hair dryer. I could afford one but feel it's ridiculous to spend that amount on an hair dryer.

Theroigne · 01/02/2020 09:34

A yacht - to me they just look like hard work and bad for the environment.
Ditto a private jet. And ditto a massive Range Rover. And ditto a holiday home which would need constant maintenance and would be bad for the local community (although I’d be sorely tempted to buy a cottage in the Lake District 😊).

Personalised number plates, manicures, fillers and fur: no way, I want to grow old gracefully thanks!

Private school fees: we have a perfectly good range of state schools where we live.

I would however love to buy a new Volvo and a new Aga as both are getting a bit old and unreliable now. I would also love to fly first class, simply because I’m obsessed with sleep!

YouJustDoYou · 01/02/2020 09:35

Designer crap. Shitty sports car.

Theroigne · 01/02/2020 09:36

Agree Fizzypoo on the Dyson. I nearly did once when it was on offer and even then I just couldn’t bring myself to spend that much money on a hairdryer!

TheGinGenie · 01/02/2020 09:37

Handbags. I don't seem the appeal of really expensive ones at all.

Somanysocks · 01/02/2020 09:48

Hot tub. Body soup yuk

GetOffYourHighHorse · 01/02/2020 09:57

'Designer crap. Shitty sports car.'

Then people buy their dc expensive designer tat and wonder why they grow up to be spoilt brats. I saw someone online sniggering at Adidas trainers and saying 'oh no it's all about Balenciaga now'. How cringeworthy.

TheMemoryLingers · 01/02/2020 09:58

I wouldn't bother with any TV subscription channels as the Freeview channels are enough for me - nor would I upgrade my fairly old and basic television.

I wouldn't want any tech gadgets such as Alexa, or smart fridges etc. I wouldn't replace my mobile phone, but I probably would upgrade my laptop.

Like many PPs, no interest in a flashy car.

I would, however, go to town on a top end hi-fi system ... and I'd like one of those fridges that has an ice dispenser in the door and the money to get it plumbed into the water mains.

babysnowman · 01/02/2020 09:59

I've been wondering about personalised number plates recently...is one of the reasons people get them so as to avoid others knowing how old their car is?

Celeriacacaca · 01/02/2020 09:59

Yacht - I'd rather rent one!

smemorata · 01/02/2020 10:00

Personalised number plate. Pretentious and an utter waste of money.
This. It has no intrinsic beauty or use. It's just a way of letting others know you have more money than sense.

AlexaAmbidextra · 01/02/2020 10:15

A Mulberry handbag, or any ridiculously priced designer handbag come to that.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 01/02/2020 10:30

@Theroigne - how on earth is a yacht bad for the environment? You do realise they use wind power???

Ponoka7 · 01/02/2020 10:30

@TwoZeroTwoZero
"Velvetiser hot chocolate thing"

Me and my DD (22),who lives with me, both agree that it's the best thing we've ever bought/owned.

I don't have other gadgets, not even a microwave, but we thought we'd try it from QVC, which gave us the option of returning it.

Ponoka7 · 01/02/2020 10:32

@MilkTrayLimeBarrel, it's bad for the water quality, changes were it sails so has a negative effect on the sea creatures.

museumum · 01/02/2020 10:35

A massive Land Rover. They don’t fit on our roads (live in a historic area) or in parking places and they block other cars’ views at junctions and when pulling out of parking places.

Laytheblanketontheground · 01/02/2020 10:53

sounds bizarre, but you did ask ....any sort of weapon or military things related to the nazis - I knew someone who collected that stuff
anything that glamorised violence or degraded anyone (collectors things again masked as 'art')
ridiculous crap for children - mine used to be friends with some children who had everything such as fridges. in their bedrooms for example

Theroigne · 01/02/2020 11:47

Thank you @Ponoka7

Milktray I’m talking super yachts, which I believe are usually run on diesel engines.

cologne4711 · 01/02/2020 12:23

Lots of things - anything that made me a target for theft.

Definitely not a sports car though because of how low they are. Recipe for back trouble. And not an expensive SUV either.

My luxury would be a personal chef. I like eating but not cooking.

Nice to have a plane, but would not use it that much

Gogolego · 01/02/2020 12:33

Personalised number plate
Designer clothes which are white
WiFi enabled lightbulbs

Hotpinkangel19 · 01/02/2020 12:41

Handbag or shoes.

steppemum · 01/02/2020 12:50

First class plane tickets.

now this I WOULD buy.
because if I had loads of money, I would want to travel, a lot. I wouldn't want the 5 star hotels etc, much prefer low key places, backpacking through the jungle etc, but if it is a long way, and money no object, then a first class bed on a plane - that would be worth it!

No interest in clothes or labels, or cars etc, function over fashion every time.
I would love to have a few extra rooms on our house

  1. a study/craft room for me
  2. a teenage hangout room for friends/x-box etc, that isn't their bedroom
  3. a spare room for guests
  4. and extra bedroom so we could foster.

and I would love ot be able to afford to do a few things like get the pation done.
But apart form those, I cannot see the point in most expensive things
