What is a luxury item you would never buy, regardless of your ability to afford it?

A Rolex watch.
The mark up is ridiculous.

DinosApple · 01/02/2020 08:23

iPhone.
And I wouldn't fly for environmental reasons. But I'd probably like a go on the Orient express.

dayswithaY · 01/02/2020 08:32

Anything by The White Company, ridiculous marketing nonsense for sheets and pillowcases.

Techway · 01/02/2020 08:42

Personalised car plates
iPhones, ridiculously expensive and I refuse to buy into the 'cult'.
Expensive bags, can't see the value once you go over a certain price.

I would fly business class though

poodlepoo9999 · 01/02/2020 08:42

A brand new car.

AwfulSomething · 01/02/2020 08:44

A car
Iphone

Juliette20 · 01/02/2020 08:45

A holiday to Dubai.

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 01/02/2020 08:48

Yes Juliette just coming on to say exactly that. You could pay me to go there.

CherryPavlova · 01/02/2020 08:49

I think if I don’t want it then it’s not actually a luxury. Luxury is something that makes you feel good and needn’t be expensive. There is a difference between expensive and luxury.

Nothing much more luxurious that a deep, hot candlelit bath with Mozart playing softly.

I wouldn’t consider things like fake nails, spray tan and having my makeup done as a luxury; I wouldn’t want them and think tacky rather than luxury.

MiniTheMinx · 01/02/2020 08:50

I think might be easier to say what I would buy, and assume anything not on the list wouldn't be of any interest Smile

A large (ish) Georgian house
More antique furniture
George ll pier mirrors
paintings
AC Cobra
DB7
Meile appliances
Several dogs
household help
a horse
The fastest computers I could source x 5
get my pilots license.

Not interested in fashion items, designer bags, gadgets, or new cars.

MrsMoastyToasty · 01/02/2020 08:55

Mulberry handbags.

They're made by machine like most other handbags (I was shown around the production line when I went for a job interview. I didn't get the job).

GetOffYourHighHorse · 01/02/2020 08:56

'A designer handbag.'

It's the ones that buy them then brag about it online that I find rather sad. What kind of poor self esteem must you have to need to show off about a 3000 quid hand bag.

'wouldn’t consider things like fake nails, spray tan and having my makeup done as a luxury; I wouldn’t want them and think tacky rather than luxury.'

Indeed.

AmelieTaylor · 01/02/2020 09:00

I’m vegetarian so I’d never buy any of the food considered expensive/a luxury.

I would buy a bigger house, nicer car, etc

Clothes, I wouldn’t buy anything different than what I buy now.

There’s nothing on this earth that would induce me to spend £££on handbags. I don’t buy leather anyway so I doubt I could find an expensive bag if I tried anyway, but even if I could I wouldn’t, it just doesn’t interest me.

Nor jewellery, shoes, etc.

MapMyMum · 01/02/2020 09:01

I agree with most of the stuff here except one pp said dishwasher. I like having a dishwasher and they use less water than washing by hand nowadays apparently, so if I got one built to last and took good care of it to avoid having to buy a new one for as long as possible then I feel ok about having what is basically a non essential item.

A big no no for me is anything with real fur, caviar, foie gras, anything with a big fuel guzzling engine, any tech device that listens, ridiculous designer things. I know people that literally run themselves into the ground buying designer things, most of them are struggling for money, but they buy all the latest designer clothes and phones etc to try and show everyone that they're fine. It's madness and I refuse to buy into it

DinosaurDreams · 01/02/2020 09:03

Anything that screams ‘I’m rich!’

Flashy handbags, watches, cars etc. It’s just not me.

PersonaNonGarter · 01/02/2020 09:05

Personalised number plate
Private jet

Can’t believe someone said expensive butter. It’s so worth the extra 50p.

FloraGreysteel · 01/02/2020 09:08

Fois gras, fur, diamonds, a watch, the usual stuff! No fancy car as I can't drive.

undercoveraessedai · 01/02/2020 09:16

My "fancy" sports car was hands down the best thing I've ever bought - not a posh one, a little Mr2 which made me smile every day for nearly ten years. I still miss her!

Agree with pp that luxuries are more about whether you want them or not.

But stuff I would never buy regardless of affordability:

Fur
Private plane
Expensive crockery
Botox
Coffee machine/velvetiser
iPhone or Mac

BikeRunSki · 01/02/2020 09:18

Fur, silk, cashmere

milliefiori · 01/02/2020 09:19

A horse
Marble flooring

Vegansarefriends · 01/02/2020 09:20

Oh I would love ‘electronic’ gates, there is a raging heavy drinker near me who keeps banging on my front door, shouting and swearing and throwing her vodka bottles in my garden.

I so would get them to keep her out 🤣

Bloodybridget · 01/02/2020 09:21

Loads of things! Designer bags/shoes, fantastically expensive watches, perfume, makeup, sports car, jewellery, a round the world cruise, a racehorse!

KizzyWayfarer · 01/02/2020 09:21

Designer handbags was the first thing I thought of. Not that I’m an expert on them but some of them look pretty ugly, and that carrying them on the crook of your arm thing would be uncomfortable - I want something I can sling over my shoulder!
I would love long haul holidays to exotic destinations but would have to pass because of the carbon footprint. If my fantasy riches came e.g. from a lottery win rather than a well-paying job that required regular attendance, then I could do some serious long-distance train travel...
Love the idea that a pp suggested of buying land and creating a woodland meadow.

BlueStocking007 · 01/02/2020 09:22

Dishwasher

Villanomme · 01/02/2020 09:24

Anything designer, clothes, bags or footwear. Seems pointless to me.
