What is a luxury item you would never buy, regardless of your ability to afford it?

I want a dick feather coat 😂

RhymingRabbit3 · 01/02/2020 13:29

Any designer clothes, bags, shoes etc.
If money was no object I would certainly go for more expensive clothing, but I would never be spending £1000 on a handbag or a pair of shoes.

I was gifted a £150 Fornasetti candle this Christmas. From a very generous relative. I think it will cost £10 every time l light it, literally burning money. I was quite nonplused when l realised how much the thing cost and haven’t had the heart to light it yet.
So l am adding expensive candles to the list.

Cigars (they stink imo!), wine (I don't drink alcohol), and real fur (I won't wear it)!

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 01/02/2020 13:39

I wouldn't buy a Mulberry just because the prices are so inflated and everybody has one so they no longer seem like a luxury item. Same goes for a Range Rover. Not dissing those who have them, it just wouldn't seem worth it for me. However I would, and do, happily spend silly amounts of money on travel.

RHTawneyonabus · 01/02/2020 13:43

I saw an artic cruise which looked amazing. I’d love to go. Then I saw you could have your own private hot tub on your balcony. You could sit in that literally watch the ice melt and feel like a metaphor for the folly of the human race. Put me right off.

SquareOnTheHypoteneuse · 01/02/2020 14:01

Champagne - much prefer Asti Spumante.

BearSoFair · 01/02/2020 14:12

Designer shoes. I think I'd always be thinking about how much they cost me and trying to avoid them ever getting grubby!

lljkk · 01/02/2020 14:24

I'm not interested in clothes. Warm, clean & comfy is what I need.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 01/02/2020 14:54

A novelty number plate, ever since I found out that KN08 HED was withdrawn from availability by the DVLA. Boring, joyless bastards.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 01/02/2020 15:02

I'd buy lots of the things mentioned here Blush Definitely no fur or Botox though.

The only thing I can think of, for me, that hasn't been mentioned is specially bred cats that cost a lot to buy. I would have lots and lots and lots of cats and kittens but would adopt them from rescues.

comingupafterthebreak · 01/02/2020 15:12

There is so much I just would not spend my money on, I barely know where to start...

A Lexus (or any other "Get out of the way, I'm more important than you" car).
Round-the world cruise (The claustrophobia would drive me insane).
A holiday in Dubai (why anyone wants to go there is beyond me).
Swimming pool (a load of faff to run, and not worth the effort).
Hot tub (ditto, with added listeria).
Statement jewellery (subtle is the way to go).
Pretentious hotels (I know how little you pay your staff).
Poncy restaurants (too much fannying about with absurd ingredients).
A new-build house (I want a proper real garden).
Foie gras, caviar or quail's eggs (welfare).
Tickets to the opera (no explanation necessary).

PrincessHoneysuckle · 01/02/2020 15:15

Expensive heels.
I'm 5 ft 10 so I can admire their beauty but I'd never wear them.

victoria0132 · 01/02/2020 15:27

First class plane tickets - everyone gets there at the same time.

Designer clothes/handbags

OhTheRoses · 01/02/2020 16:35

I have some of the luxury items on here but what I won't do is waste money. I can make coffee at work and take a portable cup in the car with me each morning. I always take in my lunch.

Yet I have colleagues who complain constantly about being skint and must fritter £10 per day on coffee, and sandwiches, etc.

Now DH and I are near retirement and travel as a two some rather than a foursome if we were going long haul we would look at upgrading.

BurneyFanny · 01/02/2020 16:56

A thermomix. Pile o'shite.

smemorata · 01/02/2020 17:01

I like my thermomix!

BurneyFanny · 01/02/2020 17:05

Good for you your complete mug

notacooldad · 01/02/2020 17:13

I'm not in to watches, cars, ( including private plates). I can hardly tell the difference between a Mulberry bag and one from the market.

What I would spend my money on is travelling. I like doing things rather than owning them.

I would like ( but don't need) a grand design style house with large windows and rooms that that can be made bigger or smaller.
Other things I would spend my ( imaginary ) money on is skiing.

Sgtmajormummy · 01/02/2020 17:14

Broadtail astrakhan.
Made from aborted lambs’ pelts and set to be a very desirable material next winter.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 01/02/2020 17:21

A big house, too much upkeep and cleaning. I’d much prefer a nice wee bungalow and a top of the range mobility scooter!

smemorata · 01/02/2020 18:54

Good for you your complete mug
Grin
To be fair, I didn't want it and I almost divorced dh when I found out how expensive it was! I have grown to love grudgingly appreciate it.

thebear1 · 01/02/2020 19:15

Most of the items listed, although I don't desire a designer handbag if I found one I loved that happened to be designer I might buy it if I was very rich. I wouldn't buy big ticket items like planes, boats etc as no interest. My money would go on travel, animals and good chocolate.

Holymolymackerel · 01/02/2020 19:18

Jacuzzi
Sports car
Motor bike
Art/antiques

Soontobe60 · 01/02/2020 23:47

@Sgtmajormummy

I didn't believe you about the unborn lambs, but having just read up in it I know it's a thing. How can people even think this is ok? What sort of person would want to wear something made out of the skin of a foetus?
