What is a luxury item you would never buy, regardless of your ability to afford it?

A car costing £50k

LoadsaBlusher · 02/02/2020 00:02

A private reg plate for a car
Completely pointless and “ look at me “

ChristmasCarcass · 02/02/2020 00:05

There’s stuff I’d buy if money was literally no object (designer handbags, new kitchens, paying to have my legs waxed instead of doing my own, etc). Low down my list of priorities, but if I was literally a billionaire then why not have the most expensive version?

There’s stuff I would never buy: fur, caviar, yacht, sports car, because they are just not me (or I have ethical objections to them).

There’s stuff I would definitely buy: we flew First Class on a transatlantic flight last year (bought the ticket in the seat sale for same price as business class, and it was a special trip). Having access to the first class lounge, a lie-flat bed, and constant one-to-one attention from a stewardess is definitely worth paying extra for. I probably won’t be able to afford it again until DS leaves home (and he’s only 3 Grin), but if I won the lottery I’d be flying first class every time.

Swimming pool.

StCharlotte · 02/02/2020 00:09

An SUV.

I did buy a brand new (small) car last year though.

SpaceCadet4000 · 02/02/2020 00:12

A Canada Goose coat
An expensive car with an exception for a Tesla

GlummyMcGlummerson · 02/02/2020 00:44

Not exactly luxury but if I was a trillionaire I wouldn't get my nails done in any way shape or form. All fake nails look cheap and shit and makes doing anything too hard. I hate it when I'm served by someone with fake nails and I hear them tap tap tapping away at a till/computer.

makingmiracles · 02/02/2020 01:27

Any car that cost more than 20k new, just don’t see the point, also would not buy a brand new car as value goes quickly down. Happy to drive around in something a couple of years old so I won’t be crying when some knobhead in the car park smacks their door into it and leaves a mark/dent!

Anything real fur here also.

Designer dogs

Flashy expensive jewellery, I be too scared to wear the thing in case I lost it.

CrowleysBentley · 02/02/2020 05:46

Sports car - I'd much rather something comfortable with plenty of room.

Huge house - I wouldn't want a massive place, a normal 3/4 bed house with reasonable sized bedrooms and a small-medium sized garden that I could manage to keep nice without having to get too much outside help would suit me just fine.

Smart gadgets - the whole alexa listening in thing seriously creeps me out. DS who works in computers refuses to have them too. I spent ages finding a tablet for DD for Christmas that didn't have bloody alexa pre-installed on it.

Designer stuff - no interest at all.

Most "stuff" in general really. I'd spend on my kids, books, lots of lovely squishy yarn for making stuff, cats, lovely food, interesting holidays and experiences, super comfortable beds and nice furniture that would last but beyond that not much really.

Bluerussian · 02/02/2020 05:51

A plane or helicopter.

nuttymoon · 02/02/2020 06:00

Nothing fur
No caviar
A wall mounted tv
A motorbike
A new car
Designer anything
Drugs except medicine
Foie gras
Veal
Pate
Anything with tentacles
Alligator skin products
Snake skin products
Champagne
Prosecco
Sparkling water

sashh · 02/02/2020 06:31

Fur, designer handbags, shoes.

I would want a big house and a swimming pool, I have arthritis so a pool would be great. I will employ someone to clean for me and to keep the pool nice.

I am going to (obviously when I win the lottery) buy somewhere as a retreat / bolt hole but I will buy something with an upstairs, the upstairs would be converted into a flat, the down stairs will be wheelchair accessible.

I will rent the flat to a young local family / couple / person for a peppercorn rent as long as they keep an eye on my place.

Fur
The latest phone

goldpendant · 02/02/2020 08:17

Personalised plate, just think it's so naff!

Ellapaella · 02/02/2020 08:34

I'd never spend money on a posh car or a personalised number plate.

christmasathome · 02/02/2020 08:54

Designer hand bag or just designer clothes really. I can't see the benefit of spending hundreds or even thousands of pounds on a bag 🤷🏽‍♀️

Sewrainbow · 02/02/2020 09:17

Most modern gadgety stuff much to my son's disgust Grin

What I WOULD by if money was no object is bespoke furniture, paintings and have my house done up beautifully with all the ideas I gave but no money to do right.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 02/02/2020 09:18

Tesla, because Elon Musk is a toxic bullying arsehole.
New Rolls Royce, because it's hideous. Wouldn't mind an old one, I'd put a diesel in and run it on cooking oil.
Apple products, and that whole "I'm apparently a cool creative, but underneath I'm really a lemming". Jobs was a twat as well.

oohnicevase · 02/02/2020 09:26

I love my personalised number plate , it amuses me 🤷‍♀️...
I would never pay for Botox , it looks awful on most people !

Sewrainbow · 02/02/2020 09:31

No designer clothes, handbags or cosmetic work for me either!

And WHY would anyonec want a personalised number plate is beyond me - I can remember someone at work telling their friend they'd received one for their 50th and thinking I'd be so disappointed if that were me, they were delighted though.

Sgtmajormummy · 02/02/2020 10:51

@Soontobe60
Yes, taking the fur trade a further step into inhumanity.
Not a recent practice, either.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 02/02/2020 13:29

All number plates are personalised. That's kind of the point.Grin

liverbird209 · 02/02/2020 13:33

A yacht.

TildaKauskumholm · 02/02/2020 13:40

Anything with logos or branding, personalised number plate, fancy expensive cars (I gasp when I see prices over £10K), first class travel, anything blingy that shouts 'money but no class'!

bachsingingmum · 02/02/2020 14:59

Anything showy offy. Just not interested. That means we could pay off the mortgage and go on (non-flash) skiiing holidays. But

Pâté? I get packs of really tasty pâté for 60p in Morrison's.

And am I allows a dog with real fur?
