How often do you air the house in this weather?

I do daily, extra jumper if nec, no matter how nippy outside. Am I the only one?

Only if DH not in! He would go mental about the lost heat

whatswithtodaytoday · 25/01/2020 21:42

Where are all you people who open your windows? I'm literally the only person on my street in winter.

Anyway. Yes, always open for a bit - usually open the bedroom window while I'm in the shower, at least. Only close them if it's actually freezing, gale force winds or snowing.

SinglePringle · 25/01/2020 21:47

Yes I have decent extractor fans but nothing beats actual fresh air in the house. I love it.

BestZebbie · 25/01/2020 21:47

When do you everyday airers do this? Isn't it already dark and freezing cold, with heating on, after work, and not that much time in the mornings to open all windows/air/lock all windows again before going out?

onlyconnect · 25/01/2020 21:52

I open the bedroom window every morning without fail but if it's really cold that might only be for ten minutes. I hate that morning stuffy feel.
I am surprised by the responses here though. When I look at other houses on my street I hardly see any windows open in the winter.

cheezy · 25/01/2020 21:54

I always sleep with the window open, even in the depth of winter. I can’t sleep with the window shut. I don’t know how anyone can!

Fizzypoo · 25/01/2020 21:55

My bathroom window is open all the time. The bedroom window is often slightly open at night (I live in a village) and I shut it before work or leave it open all day.

If its windy I shut the bedroom one as my blinds bang and crash.

megletthesecond · 25/01/2020 21:55

I have little vents built into each window that can be opened and closed. Unless it's sub zero they're usually open.

ElloBrian · 25/01/2020 21:57

BestZebbie - I open the bedroom window as soon as I get up and then close it again when I lock up en route to work. Then when I get home I open it again and it stays open most of the evening. I open the bathroom window after I’ve showered and close it before I go to work, and the vents are open all day. I open the kitchen door when cooking or after cooking, depending on what’s on the menu.

firstimemamma · 25/01/2020 21:57

Daily all year round.

When it's cold like this just 10 mins or so when the heating isn't on - one window downstairs and one upstairs. Sometimes I forget the downstairs window.

BalancingStick · 25/01/2020 22:02

I love a thread like this. All day, every day versus never. Surely most of us just open windows as and when the house needs it?!

BubblegumFactory · 25/01/2020 22:06

All bedroom top openers open all night in our house, cannot sleep with closed window - wake up with a massive headache if I inadvertently forget to open it! Bathroom window open all the time if we are home. Like fresh air.

Poetryinaction · 25/01/2020 22:06

Bathrooms and my bedroom window always open. Kids bedrooms windows open during the day, shut for evening. Downstairs mostly shut in winter.

Wannabegreenfingers · 25/01/2020 22:08

When working from home I'll open upstairs for a couple of hours. The front/back doors stay firmly shut in this weather. I can't abide a cold house, its truly depressing.

IsItLunchTime · 25/01/2020 22:09

Every day

TheSubtleArt · 25/01/2020 22:09

One small window in the upstairs hallway is always open and only closed if there's a gale force wind!

JamesBlonde1 · 25/01/2020 22:15

Every day and usually sleep at night with the window open. Can't stand stuffiness. You can tell from the smell in someone's house if they don't open windows (or have painted them over so they can't open as in my friends parents house Confused).

Neednewwellies · 25/01/2020 22:15

I can’t sleep in a warm house and our bedroom is directly above the utility room and boiler so always warm. So we have the bedroom window open 24h a day. The en-suite, bathroom and downstairs loo windows are always open during the day too.

frugalkitty · 25/01/2020 22:22

I like to leave upstairs windows on the latch from getting up until lunchtime through the winter, but last year we replaced the kids bedroom windows with sash windows which are either shut and locked or open, no latch option which I hadn't thought about. It means they're covered in condensation in the morning and I'm battling mould already, not even a year old yet. They look amazing but aren't very practical. We open them every morning still but have to make sure they don't get left open.

stoneysongs · 25/01/2020 22:25

Aren't your houses freezing with windows open in this weather? Our house is cold and draughty at the best of times and takes a while to warm up too.

MazDazzle · 25/01/2020 22:29

A couple of times a week?

Our house is very old (200 yrs) and draughty enough as it is!

AlphaJura · 25/01/2020 22:29

Bedroom window, I usually open for a few hours in the morning. Bathroom window is sometimes open slightly and gets opened more after baths/showers. Kitchen window gets opened when I'm cooking (don't have an extractor). A few of the other windows upstairs are old and don't close tightly so there's usually some air getting in.

anunseemlylovefordustin · 25/01/2020 22:31

Approximately 450 times a day, to let the flipping dogs out and back in and out and back in and out...ad infinitum.

TimeMarchesOnNeverEnding · 25/01/2020 22:32

I didn't even know this was a thing.....

tenlittlecygnets · 25/01/2020 22:40

Main bathroom window open all the time.
Loo windows open after poos.
Bedroom windows open every day to air. Bedrooms smell foosty after people have breathed in them all night!
