How often do you air the house in this weather?

I do daily, extra jumper if nec, no matter how nippy outside. Am I the only one?

My bedroom, the spare room (tumble dryer is in there) and the kitchen (caravan is plugged in) are open a crack all the time. Bathroom is opened whenever we have a shower and left open until it’s dry. I open the living room window for a bit every morning as we have single glazing and the windows get quite wet overnight. Ds objects hugely to his window being opened, but I tend to do it once he’s at school to get rid of the teenage boy smell!

Keepmewarm · 26/01/2020 00:38

Daily.

Ninkanink · 26/01/2020 00:47

We have one window open in each room on each side of the flat, pretty much all the time. We only close all the windows on very cold nights, even in our bedroom. We both can’t stand stuffy, stale air.

Ninkanink · 26/01/2020 00:50

In the summer all our windows are open all the time, day and night (barring actual storms and very strong winds).

HoldMyLobster · 26/01/2020 00:55

LOL, I love these threads. No, I don't generally air my house in winter.

katewhinesalot · 26/01/2020 00:55

It has to be super hot for our windows to be opened.

Ninkanink · 26/01/2020 01:00

(Obviously the above applies because we live in a flat at the moment so it’s perfectly secure to leave the windows open. When we lived in a house it was slightly different as we’d close downstairs windows when we were out and leave upstairs windows on the latch.)

PenguinsOnParade · 26/01/2020 01:05

Most days, unless it's really windy. I've actually just closed our living room window after having it open most of the day. Our house is really warm most of the time, even without the heating on so the temperature isn't an issue. We have the vents open permanently, no matter the weather.

QueenOfOversharing · 26/01/2020 01:27

@NannyR I love seeing duvets out the windows! Why don't we do that here?

Divebar · 26/01/2020 01:36

Bedroom & bathroom windows are open most of the time unless it’s blowing a gale in the wrong direction... I would keep them open in snowy weather too. It’s revolting having to sleep in hot, airless rooms. ( eg hotels where you can only open a window 2 inches) - gives me a headache. Downstairs tends to be more ad hoc and more likely in warmer weather but nothing is better on a sunny day than throwing some windows and getting some washing on the line. ( ha ha well obviously there are LOTS of things better). I wonder if the people who never open them are the same ones who sit with the overhead lights on in their sitting rooms.

Chienloup · 26/01/2020 01:41

Bathrooms and bedrooms are open from 7.30am - about 4pm. Downstairs I have the backdoor open for the cat for an hour or so.

Marchitectmummy · 26/01/2020 01:55

Every morning for an hour once we are all showered and dressed. All windows are opened fully and then after an hour closed up and if needed heating goes on. In the summer and if its dry in the winter twice a week all of our duvets are taken out to the garden to air. There is nothing as nice as sleeping in an aired duvet well worth the effort.

I can't imagine not opening the windows every day, my parents also aired their house. Humans are damp, we all exhale breath, cooking, smells furniture finishes and paint gives off poisonous fumes. As someone else already mentioned indoor air quality is far more polluted than outdoors.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 26/01/2020 03:43

Every day. I'm in a flat with no central heating so the damp would be terrible if I didn't. I tend to leave the windows open while I'm out at work (I live in a high flat so no chance of getting burgled).

CrowleysBentley · 26/01/2020 05:10

Mine are open all the time at the moment. I have those ones that open like a door, or slanting back from the top, so just leave them open at the top. Plus our windows are inaccessible unless you are actually spiderman, as the ramp to the underground car park is below us. It's not been at all cold here, and I can't sleep without a bit of air coming in anyway.

GrammarTeacher · 26/01/2020 05:21

Those people who don't air their houses, don't you have issues with damp and mould?
And houses that aren't aired do smell, you just don't notice it when you live in it.

SimonJT · 26/01/2020 05:26

All windows are open a bit all of the time.

People who don’t air their homes have very smelly homes

HoldMyLobster · 26/01/2020 05:33

No damp or mould, and no smells, no.

HoldMyLobster · 26/01/2020 05:34

BTW I do open windows in spring, summer and autumn, when it's consistently above freezing. Just not in winter.

caranx · 26/01/2020 05:40

Not in winter (when heating is on)

Have open fire so that sucks all the damp air out the house.

Use bathroom and kitchen extractors when showering/cooking.

Draughty Victorian house that airs itself so no fusty smell.

Settlersofcatan · 26/01/2020 05:56

I hate visiting people's freezing cold houses as much as they must hate my "stuffy" one (no damp at all despite rarely opening the windows in winter)

Beemail1 · 26/01/2020 06:25

We do air our not too overheated house. Illness rare here. Family of four and no colds so far this winter. No stomach bugs either. I think there's a correlation.

LesLavandes · 26/01/2020 06:38

Oh. I didn't know this was a thing

WobblyAllOver · 26/01/2020 06:38

Never.

We have trickle vents on all of our windows. Don't see any need to open the windows to let the cold in tbh.

TulipCat · 26/01/2020 06:39

furniture finishes and paint gives off poisonous fumes.

No they don't, that is bonkers! Well, not unless you still have lead based paint on your walls from 50 years ago!

Squigean · 26/01/2020 06:40

Is this going to be the new MN judgemental divide - joining washing towels, changing bed sheets, shoes on/off and showering. Unless of course I've missed it.

Have to say, despite the amount if daily open windows on this thread I rarely see all open windows in actually apparently smelly and mouldy houses.
