How often do you air the house in this weather?

I do daily, extra jumper if nec, no matter how nippy outside. Am I the only one?

One man child who cant close a door behind him and his collie pup who can open on it's own so pretty much all flipping day!

Deelish75 · 26/01/2020 12:38

Open the bedroom windows every morning. In winter on the latch for an hour or so. When the weather gets warmer they are opened wider for longer. The bathroom window is opened after a shower for about half an hour (live in an old house and would have a mould problem if we didn’t)

Ihatesundays · 26/01/2020 12:39

Almost every day. Especially bedrooms and if I am hoovering (I hate hoovering with the windows closed).
I’ve had them open for about an hour today.
PIL never ever opened their windows. The kitchen and bathroom had small fans in the window for steam. The quality of the air inside was awful. My MIL constantly dusted but I am sure she was just endlessly moving the same dust about.

stoneysongs · 26/01/2020 13:29

I'm thinking the people who don't open windows and say their house doesn't smell are nose blind to it.

I'm thinking people who have to air their house just because people live in it must be extra smelly people Grin

The hospital thing - so you are opening all the windows to avoid catching flu from each other? And if nobody in the house has an airborne infectious disease there is no need?

Heating a house with the windows open is nuts imo. If you don't care about what it's costing financially, think of the environment.

Ninkanink · 26/01/2020 13:33

Nah, we both shower daily and my OH is extremely fastidious about hygiene so often showers morning and evening. We just like fresh air.

It obviously does depend on location to an extent - when we lived in Scotland we didn’t have our windows open all throughout winter... I would just open them for an hour a day or so.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/01/2020 13:33

Never, but the vents are open and the back door gets opened quite frequently for the dog etc.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/01/2020 13:34

And we use the bathroom and shower room extractor fans

userxx · 26/01/2020 13:38

Nope, just love fresh air rather than stale air. I suppose you just get used to certain things.

Forestwitch · 26/01/2020 13:39

Only open the windows when the heating is off. So most of the day (8am until 4pm) in winter and all day and night in summer.

Feelingfestivenow · 26/01/2020 13:52

Fastidious window/airier here, cannot abide houses that dont have at least the bathroom/toilet window open just a little.

Changed the bed this morning (as I do every week), window open, all bedding off, topper pulled back all to air the bed, left for a couple of hours before making it again. its about 2 dgs here outside, no heating on in the house.

Have a stable door that most of the time is open, other upstairs windows on a night latch so slightly open a lot of the time, all trickle vents open.

But then I hate houses that are stuffy with the heating on at what seems like 30dgs, I really cannot breathe.

Ninkanink · 26/01/2020 13:57

Yes, I’m the same. I hate that feeling of having to fight for good quality oxygen. I feel much, much better at a temp of 19-20 with plenty of fresh air, don’t like to be too hot, and I can’t sleep in a stuffy room. I’m just glad my OH and I are in the same camp on this as otherwise it really wouldn’t have worked!

Sadiee88 · 26/01/2020 14:01

Every morning. Bathroom & toilet window permanently open. Kitchen window all day.

Skyejuly · 26/01/2020 14:03

I hate no windows open. Feels stuffy

MimiLaRue · 26/01/2020 14:05

Nope. Studies have simply shown that fresh air brings in healthy natural bacteria which compete with bacteria in the house, when bacteria competes with each other it reduces the number of harmful bacteria. Partly why hospitals have issues with harmful bacteria- because air conditioning recycles air rather than brings in fresh. So as a general rule, airing a house makes for a healthier environment. It makes total sense to me.

Even if there weren't health benefits to it, it FEELS nicer so I would do it anyway

Feelingfestivenow · 26/01/2020 14:08

...Can I add said bedding that was taken off this morning is now on the line, I know it will not dry but will get that 'outdoor smell' when it is dry and put on the bed, god knows what the neighbours must think!

SciFiScream · 26/01/2020 14:12

I like to have a through draught blowing! So I'll open all the windows and prop the doors open.

Fresh air can be dryer and dryer air is cheaper to heat. So what you lose in one hand you gain in the other.

Love a fresh house. I can't leave windows open as it's really windy here. Once the windows have jammed open because they've been blown wide and it does get windy enough to blow pictures off walls so...

I do upstairs and downstairs separately but all gets done. In summer most windows open locked all day. All windows vented permanently and windows opened for a min of 15 mins around 5 times a week.

I'm even converting DH!

goldenorbspider · 26/01/2020 14:15

Everyday. When we go out, I leave them locked on the latch

Biancadelrioisback · 26/01/2020 14:19

I feel like this thread is getting into competitive coldness territory.

It's -54° here and I've got all my windows open and the front and back door open etc

Villanomme · 26/01/2020 14:21

Only on days off so twice a week. Not sure our insurance company would be happy if we all went out to work/school all day, left the windows open, get robbed and made a claim. Vents are open all the time though.

Treci · 26/01/2020 14:22

Amateur, I took the roof off, permanent fresh air, even when it's snowingWink

SciFiScream · 26/01/2020 14:22

@AlexaAmbidextra we called our insurance to find out the state of play. We can leave all windows upstairs open-locked.

We can't leave the downstairs windows open-locked.

I am a bit pedantic about these sorts of things. I even called up to find out if we had to inform insurance we were installing a cat flap! (Answer was no)

We've had fans installed in kitchen and bathroom. Always on but super quiet with a boost function automatically when room gets steamy.

Still open windows regularly! Love the fresh house after.

HoldMyLobster · 26/01/2020 14:29

Bah, we never even had a roof or walls, and it's -124 here.

(Actually it's gone above freezing here today and I'm not sure how to deal with the fact that I can go outside without ski gloves on. I might even - gasp - open the back door!)

Ninkanink · 26/01/2020 14:30

Meh, we’re never cold. I hate any notion of morality attached to self-deprivation, in terms of heating/eating/treats/having nice things, so it’s definitely not about that for me. On the rare occasion we decide we want to feel extra toasty, or if one of us is ill and needs extra warmth, we do put the window on the latch and turn up the heating. It’s just not how we ordinarily feel comfortable.

HoldMyLobster · 26/01/2020 14:34

But in the spirit of competitive coldness, when the previous owner of my house put the second storey on, he didn't actually bother installing any heating upstairs. He figured that with a well-insulated roof, and heat rising from downstairs, it would be fine. Let's bear in mind that I live in Maine... Grin

slartibarti · 26/01/2020 14:35

We don't open windows as have air purifiers to get rid of airborne moulds, pet dander, pollen etc that DC and I are allergic to.They also get rid of smells and make the rooms feel really fresh.
If windows were open they wouldn't work properly.
