I do daily, extra jumper if nec, no matter how nippy outside. Am I the only one?

Only in the summer.

Supersimkin2 · 25/01/2020 20:41

I keep the bathroom window open 24/7 year round, netted to stop pigeons coming in to taunt the cat. Or burglars to taunt me.

See, I don't get people who don't open windows.

Bedroom and bathroom windows are opened daily when we're at home. The others maybe open a few times a week for a few hours. Make such a huge difference to the freshness of the house.

NannyR · 25/01/2020 20:42

Just for an hour or two at the weekend. I used to live in Luxembourg where they were obsessed with airing houses - even when the temp was well below zero all the bedroom windows would be opened and the duvets hung out of the windows to air out.

lucysmam · 25/01/2020 20:42

Bathroom window doesn't close properly, so that's open all the time.

Every other window (and ofern the back door too) for at least a few hours every day.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 25/01/2020 20:43

I air the house everyday. Dh would prefer to have the window open at night, but I'm a light sleeper and wake up at every car passing by.

MoonlightMistletoe · 25/01/2020 20:43

Everyday , I like my bedroom window open at night, I love fresh air.

lucysmam · 25/01/2020 20:43

@Supersimkin2 very few folks round here seem to open their windows, ever. I've always wondered why not.

simonisnotme · 25/01/2020 20:43

when i worked afternoons windows got opened for a while most mornings- cant stand the damp shower/towel smell
now i work mornings and (not so dh) then had a big moan that the house Stank! (because he never opens the fucking windows) and he had to open the windows to air the house. I am also coughing stupid atm so i guess there may be a niff around abit

Hercwasonaroll · 25/01/2020 20:44

Every day.

You can tell houses that don't open the windows, they smell fusty. Even worse when the owner thinks a glade plugin is a substitute for opening windows (MIL I'm looking at you!).

YakkityYakYakYak · 25/01/2020 20:44

Never. Seems so wasteful to make the house all cold then have to heat it again.

We (DD and I) get out for a walk most days though to get some fresh air.

stripeypillowcase · 25/01/2020 20:45

we are however thinking of getting an air pump system when we need a new roof in a couple of years. then there wouldn't be a need to air.

SinglePringle · 25/01/2020 20:45

Every day. Mon - Fri, if I’m working away from home (am freelance), then as soon as I come downstairs, I’ll open the back French windows until I leave an hour and a half later. Ditto bedroom and bathroom.

If I’m home, as above till around 3pm. Today they were open 7-11 and then 1-5

Lipperfromchipper · 25/01/2020 20:47

We have a mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system so no not every day. It depends on weather etc. but basically the system does it for us so we don’t have to...it’s great!!

TooGood2BeTrue · 25/01/2020 20:47

Bedrooms and bathrooms daily.

chesterfuckingdrorrs · 25/01/2020 20:47

Daily. It's the first thing I do when I get up. They stay open until I need to leave the house. In warmer months they stay opened on the latch.

I have a friend who never (and I truly mean never) opens any windows for fear of besties coming in and her house feels so stuffy and smells really stale, it's not nice.

ElfishBiatch · 25/01/2020 20:48

I have never aired my house.

NewCatMummy · 25/01/2020 20:49

By “open all day” do people mean wide open or locked open a crack? I hate a stuffy house and open the bedroom and bathroom windows wide for half an hour every morning (duvet back to air the bed) then leave them locked open a crack whilst I’m out at work. Only shut them completely at night when it’s really cold and have to open them first thing even then as it feels airless in the morning.

Previous house was very drafty so completely different as the temp dropped by about 5C in that house if anything was open for more than a few seconds so it was a constant battle to keep it warm for nine months of the year.

Damnpeskykids · 25/01/2020 20:50

Everyday! DH would opt for never Hmmbut as soon as DC are out to school I love to get a breeze blowing round the house, I always feel like there's a smell in the house if I don't?! Not necessarily a bad one... maybe just a bit musty?! Confused but I do love all the windows open even if it means wearing extra layers!

DonnaDarko · 25/01/2020 20:50

Once a week or two, when no one else is in. (I WFH). this house is cold enough without my help!

Only on Mumsnet would you get people opening theirs daily lol

Supersimkin2 · 25/01/2020 20:51

I never realised I was such a nasal nazi, I get really moody if there's a whiff. Grin

Heating admittedly is a bugger at this time of year but I'd rather be cold than musty.

OP posts:
earlydoors42 · 25/01/2020 20:51

Never. I pay to heat the house so why would I let all the heat out? No it doesn't smell.

PhantomErik · 25/01/2020 20:53

I open the bedroom windows wide every morning & close them around lunchtime or later if i'm out. If it's pouring with rain I'll open them on the breather lock.

Downstairs the back door is opened a lot (dogs) so don't really open them much.

GlennBulb · 25/01/2020 20:53

I do too usually when I get back from the school run, I have a terrible mould problem In my house!

CrumpetandSausage · 25/01/2020 20:55

For the people who have to air every day, do you not have decent kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans. I don’t air my house in winter and never notice it smelling musty.
