Well today was a bit of a fail :( As soon as I set out on my brisk walk, I knew I'd picked the wrong day. Even by the end of the 5 min brisk walk BEFORE the run, I was already tired (which has never happened throughout the entire couch to 5k). Tiredness was because of a mixture of things:

  1. It was super hot, I sweat easily so was already feeling sticky and foggy headed from the heat 2)The sunlight was directly on my face which worried me as I'm doing a skin treatment which states I should avoid sun exposure (I had spf50 on but still, I pigment easily) so that left me feeling uneasy 3)I'm in PMS week so naturally feeling more bloated and puffy (3 days until my period)

so could not go further than 7 mins (did 1.4km in those 7 minutes so not too bad speed but still awful endurance). Anyone else get their performance affected by heat and/or PMS..??

I'm kinda glad I started couch to 5k in frosty January and completed it in early spring - i was perfect for me as by the end of the sessions, I'd be slightly sweaty but fairly cool throughout the run.

Maybe will stick to late evening runs in the summer :/

MrsHerculePoirot · 20/05/2020 23:51

Yes - I hate being too hot. In January everyone said “you’re doing really well doing at this time of year it’ll be lovely when it’s warmer.” #fakenews people! I’ve tried to go early or late but not always successfully. I’m due to go tomorrow but might skip it and go Friday unless I wake up magically early feeling motivated. Unlikely 😂

howow · 21/05/2020 00:14

@MrsHerculePoirot haha so true - people admired me for running in January but even then I knew it'd be a thousand times easier than in the blistering hot summer.

I just couldn't do my wk5 r3 the start of this week and I haven't tried again, any tips? Should I break it down further it was defo physiological?
I plan to run today might go back to run two but extent each run times.

TwistyHair · 22/05/2020 19:49

@MrsPerfect12 if I were you, I’d just give it another go. And run a bit slower. Just keep trying until you get it.

MrsPerfect12 · 22/05/2020 20:09

Thanks @TwistyHair, I went back to Wk5R2 today to boost me back up and I'll attempt R3 again. I'll go slower, it's my first hiccup so I need to get my
mind back in the game.

TwistyHair · 22/05/2020 20:20

It does feel weirdly long when you’re used to much shorter runs. I did 28 minutes today and it felt ages! I don’t listen to anything though and it’s unheard of to have 28 minutes of uninterrupted time.

Baileystruffle · 22/05/2020 21:28

Can I join? I have just done Week1 Run1 this morning. It was hard but doable, I am kind of looking forward to doing the next one on sunday. Which I never ever thought I'd say!
I have downloaded Runkeeper so I can track how far I go each time and hopefully see the distance increase.
Running in my converse wasn't ideal so I bought some cheap running trainers online which I hope will be ok. Not sure what to do about a bra because none of mine are good enough but I can't go try any on and feel it could be trial and error buying online before finding the right size.
What do you wear if you are a bit overweight? I wore jogging bottoms and a vest top but was hot, but think I would feel very self conscious in leggings (and don't have any). Also do I need to wear some kind of armband for my phone?

TwistyHair · 23/05/2020 06:12

I didn’t really buy anything new until I knew that I was going to stick to it. So I held my phone in my hand and just wore leggings and a T-shirt. Luckily had a sports bra from before. You could try to buy some online and jump up and down in your bedroom to see if they fit!

Purpleheadgirl · 23/05/2020 09:49

Hi Can I join please? Looking for some like-minded people for a while and finally found you :) I am early 40s, at least 4 stone overweight and as unfit as you can imagine yet in moment of madness started this programme.....and after killing myself doing the first week runs, I have just done the 3rd run of week 5 and somehow run 20mins!!! Still bright red but chuffed despite it barely being a jog for speed, I actually did it so if I can, anyone can :)

howow · 23/05/2020 13:01

5.63km in 30 mins running today - was definitely a better feeling day as went in the evening when it was much cooler

howow · 23/05/2020 14:41

*yesterday I meant lol

TwistyHair · 23/05/2020 15:53

Nice howow! How do you time it? I have Strava but it always includes the walking bit. Don’t wanna have to take phone out of armband just to start it at the running section.

TwistyHair · 23/05/2020 15:55

purple that’s great! You must be so pleased. I never thought I could run due to bad knees but after a few initial niggles it’s been ok

howow · 23/05/2020 16:58

@TwistyHair thank you :) I do use Strava now too but I only start recording when it’s the running portion. It’s much easier to do now that it’s 5 mins walk followed by 30 mins running. I used to just record the whole session in the earlier weeks of the program where it was like running and walking alternating. I usually take my phone out my pocket close to when 5 minute walk is over and then start recording and then put it back in my pocket and start running.

TwistyHair · 23/05/2020 17:46

Thanks @Howow I’m going to try recording just the running. Doing 28 mins now. It’s just faff because it’s in an armband.

pinklashes98 · 24/05/2020 21:33

Hi everyone, could I please join? I'm 33 and am looking to lose my pregnancy weight. My little boy is actually turning 1 next week, I feel liked I gained weight after his birth due to comfort eating! I've been putting this off so much due to feeling insecure about looking silly in the park. But scrolling through this thread I've definitely gained some motivation!

I plan to start my first run tomorrow morning!

Baileystruffle · 27/05/2020 11:07

Just done week 1 run3. Think I am ready for week 2 now! It was a little awkward as I took my dc with me and the youngest kept stopping so I had to keep circling back. But wore my new trainers. Was very hot!

YellowEllis · 21/09/2020 20:55

Is this the most current thread? I'm starting tomorrow!

AnxiousWeirdo · 01/12/2020 16:52

@YellowEllis

How have you found it? I started yesterday, I enjoyed it but my shins are agony!
