Hi! I'd love to join you all, I've been considering doing this for a few weeks. I normally go to the gym for weights as can't run at all but thought I could give it a go. I have a treadmill at home that I can use.
Do you have any decent sport bra recommendations?

howow · 13/04/2020 10:21

@MrsPerfect12 shock absorber is awesome.

MrsPerfect12 · 13/04/2020 10:33

@howow I do have a shock absorber. It's a bit tight but I'll see if it's wearable. My others wouldn't be good enough for running 🙈😂😂😂

@Orangesandbananas

Just keep going - I thought I would die after w1r1 but I persevered and it does get easier.

It also depends what you want from it. I was never going to take up any sort of serious or group running, but I also have never so much as run for a bus in my life. I am almost 60 and had put on loads of weight after giving up smoking.

I didn't make it to the end, but got over half way through and found a level that I am comfortable with. If you need to repeat a week then don't beat yourself up about it.

I still go out 3 days a week and I feel like someone has removed a small sea lion from my midriff. I also now have some interesting podcasts which is a great improvement from the dire music on the NHS app.

The strict lockdown here in France means that I have had to stay close to home. When I was still using the app it meant that I could pinpoint when to start/stop running and I now have a routine which works for me. Good luck!

MrsPerfect12 · 13/04/2020 13:19

I did W1R1 today and managed it fine. Looking forward to number 2.

Cherrypi · 13/04/2020 13:43

W1R2 for me today. Much easier now it's cooler. Also had the radio on in the background instead of just music which keeps my mind more distracted.

Mummabear2212 · 13/04/2020 15:57

W1R3 done today, before this run I said I would repeat week 1 as had so little confidence in myself, but I enjoyed today and want to try w2. Also found a playlist i liked and being cooler helped massively. Also realised I like how exercise makes me feel

MrsPerfect12 · 13/04/2020 16:17

@Cherrypi @Mummabear2212 we're at the same stage which is good. Good luck.

Mummabear2212 · 13/04/2020 16:27

@MrsPerfect12 thank you, you too. And you as well @Cherrypi. Nice to have some company at the start of this.

Jfw82 · 15/04/2020 08:18

@Howow you must be due to finish any day now?
I've just done W9D1 of a 10K program (couch to 5k has let me start at week 9 of 14) not sure at my speed I'll get up to 10K distance but I think it works me up to running for an hour. Today was run 20 walk for 3 and run for 20 plus warm up and warm down walks. Definitely feel mentally better the days I get our and start with a run

Cherrypi · 15/04/2020 14:29

Hi fellow beginners. I did w1r3 this morning with the kids and it wasn't a total disaster. Felt much easier again. Looking forward to week 2.

howow · 15/04/2020 20:14

@Jfw82 that sounds cool. Is it the 10K app with the word 10K written in white on a red background as the app icon? How many km did you cover in today’s run?

Yup that’s right! Just back from Week 9 Run 2 so only 1 run left to finish the Couch to 5k program! Managed to do 5.7 km in 30 minutes. Was terribly exhausting and felt nausea at the 28 min mark and had an awful stitch. Did not enjoy it but the endorphin rush at the end when I’ve finished each run is always so worth it.

Jfw82 · 15/04/2020 20:32

@Howow you are so much fitter than me I only did 5.6k in my whole time!! I'm hoping that as I work up my duration I'll also continue to improve my pace.

I looked at the red one you mentioned but ended up using one which is yellow with 10K and little person and called 10K runner- spent £12 (prob bit of a rip off) for full access so I could start from whatever week I wanted (you could see all the plans but not access them for training with them etc without working up to it and you could also subscribe monthly but I only wanted to pay once and not get caught up and forget to cancel!)

I liked the program it had for next 2-3 weeks as thought it would suit me stepping up so decided to go for this one and like the couch to 5k it does the timing cues over top of my audiobook so I can just listen to that and wait to be told what to do Grin

howow · 15/04/2020 20:42

@Jfw82 that sounds great! Thanks but I think I’m pushing myself beyond my physical abilities a tad bit. I spend the entire 5 minute cool-down walk catching my breath!

Is the yellow app a lot better than the red one then? I think on the red one you can start at about week 9 or 10 if you can already run 5km but not sure if it provides audio cues at different markers e.g 5 minutes to go etc. as I haven’t tried it yet.

I do like Sarah Milican narrating couch to 5k

Jfw82 · 15/04/2020 20:52

@howow the red one looked decent but it didn't look like it would let me listen to my audible (seemed like it wanted to use my music through the app which didn't work how I work at the min) also just personal preference that I liked the running patterns for first couple of weeks more (red one is run 10 walk 1 four times for week 9 whereas yellow one run 20 walk 2 run 20.... ) not sure about audio cues on the red app - though no other app will have as good as Sarah Millican and yellow one def has them so maybe try the red app and if it doesn't work I've found an alternative!!

TwistyHair · 15/04/2020 21:00

Just done w3r2. It’s totally fine aerobically but my knees hurt! I’m doing glutes strengthening exercises so hope that’ll help

howow · 15/04/2020 22:14

Thanks @Jfw82 I’m still on the fence on whether I want to even work up to 10K haha maybe I’d rather be a jack of all trades (sports) rather than specialise in running. Will see though. If the red one doesn’t allow radio/audiobook apps at the same time, I’d definitely opt for the yellow app too..!

howow · 15/04/2020 22:16

@ TwistyHair I’ve found that different body parts hurt for each run I’ve done so you might find it easing up on the next run. I’ve had achy shoulders, side stitch, stomach aches, painful knee, painful hamstrings across the 26 runs on this program I’ve done so far. Bad and good running days are common.

Jfw82 · 15/04/2020 22:25

@TwistyHair I struggled with knees and ankles a little at first. When I made it to week 5 (and I believed I would keep it up) I invested in some decent trainers and that really helped

@Howow I'm def not going to be a 'runner' but a 10K aim seems a good way to work up further on time and distance to wherever my comfort point is (but with a 1yo and 3yo at home I've no other sports competing Grin)

MrsPerfect12 · 15/04/2020 23:07

I did my w1r2 yesterday and my knee is sore today. Hopefully manage r3 tomorrow if not I'll do Friday. Should of done I was told and had a day off in between 🤦🏻‍♀️

TwistyHair · 16/04/2020 07:25

@howow that’s good to know. @Jfw82 I don’t mind the bit of pain if I know that it’s strengthening in the end. It’s more of it’s doing damage that I’d be worried. I’ve invested in some knee straps now that go just under your knee. I bought new trainers so that might help too. But now I wish I’d bought over pronation ones based on some responses on another thread I made. I’ll see how it goes.

Well done everyone who’s just starting too.

MrsHerculePoirot · 17/04/2020 19:12

Went today - took the kids on their scooters. Actually ran faster than usual - covered 5k too!! Might have to drag them out with me again...

howow · 17/04/2020 22:25

@MrsHerculePoirot that's great :) I was intending to do W9R3 tonight but didn't in the end

MrsHerculePoirot · 17/04/2020 22:44

Do it tomorrow @Howow then we can celebrate tomorrow 💪

howow · 18/04/2020 01:10

@MrsHerculePoirot aw yeah I hope I manage it tomorrow. :)
