I have just completed week 3, although I definitely need to repeat a couple of extra sessions. I’m taking it slow & steady.
My thing is breathing, I feel like I’m suffocating if I start thinking about breathing!

Great thread.
Have downloaded the couch to 5k app again, had it last year but never got going. Followed the suggested Facebook pages. Found a 5k park run across the road every Saturday at 9am. Going to dig out my trainers next. Really want to get moving this year now life seems to have settled a little. Pushing 40 and want to loose some timber!

knorrig · 02/01/2020 20:28

I did it starting in August last year. I honestly struggled to run 20m before! Hated running massively so I shocked myself being able to do it, was super chuffed with myself. Been trying to keep it up since but I prefer to run outside than on the treadmill but hate running in the cold.

On a practical level. What does everyone wear? Where do you put your phone? What do you do about your hair? I ask because mines curly and isn't happy if washed more than twice a week maximum. Thanks

KatieRobin · 02/01/2020 21:05

I’m doing it at the moment. I’m on week 7 and absolutely love it! Never in a million years would I have thought I could ‘run’. When I first started I struggled to run for 1 minute. I would be so self conscious of running out in public. Now I love it and am running for 25 minutes plus! I am no longer self conscious running either; I feel empowered and proud of what I’m doing. I really find it amazing that the app works - it actually works! When I first started I just wore leggings/ T-shirt/ jumper and old trainers. Now I have just bought some proper running shoes and they are great. I wear some non see through performance leggings from M&S and a sports T-shirt ( with a running jacket over the top) I tie my hair back and wear a running band on my head 1. Because your head can get cold in winter even when you’re hot! 2. You sweat running!
Honestly, if I can do it anyone can! Really recommend it!

theneverendinglaundry · 03/01/2020 06:49

@Mocha3105 I haven't spent much on running gear. I have a couple of pairs of leggings and a couple of long sleeved base layer tops (all of which I found in a charity shop). When its warmer I wear t shirts. I have some old trainers that i use too.

For my phone and keys I bought a bum bag type thing off Ebay!

I did it a few years ago and was amazed that even I managed it. I'm starting again next week when the kids are back at school.

Ulysses · 03/01/2020 07:25

Its something I start every year or so and I've only managed to finish it once which was about 2 and a half years ago now. Yesterday I did Day One and I loved completing it. It was pouring rain and I did it in the trail in the woods next to me and it felt great to be outdoors.

I've ordered a running gilet from Decathlon which I hope comes soon as the cold really put me off from venturing out. I had a lightweight North Face jacket on but after 5 minutes I had warmed up.

I read Jog On by Bella Mackie to get some inspiration, as she got into running to help her mentally. I find myself getting really antsy a lot of the time and a tendency for low mood so I'm hoping to use it as a means to get rid of this (as well as the extra stone and a half Ive put on in the past few years).

thisusernameun · 03/01/2020 07:39

Just restarted after ending at week 7 last summer when life got in the way.

Which app do people use? I use couch to 5k by BBC and it annoys me as it keeps stopping in the middle of a run and then I only figure it out when I haven't stopped running. Any better ones out there?

Youvegotafriendinme · 03/01/2020 08:18

Very interested in doing this!
Was looking at doing a class at the local leisure centre but The times don’t suit with DS at nursery but I can easily go for a jog/run. Does anyone recommend an app as there’s a few on there?

Mimosa1 · 03/01/2020 08:57

Just finished week one. Not sure how I'm going to manage 90s of running in week 2 but I've got a date with a friend on sat to run then brunch. We shall see! Good luck all

katzenellenbogen · 03/01/2020 09:08

Tagging on. Need to hunt out my trainers!
Very encouraged by all the previous comments.

CormoranStrike · 03/01/2020 09:48

I am surprising myself by actually being sad that today is NOT a running day!

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 03/01/2020 11:09

Just finished W1R2. Already loving it.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 03/01/2020 11:10

This is the app I've used. It's free. I think there are loads about and the run/walk pattern is identical, it just depends on what style of 'coach' you prefer.

I have Jo Whiley and I must admit to swearing at her more than once last year!!

Couch to 5k newbies - who's in??
CormoranStrike · 03/01/2020 11:39

That’s the one I use, with Sanjeev Kholi.

Ulysses · 03/01/2020 11:54

That's the one I use too (also with Sanjeev Kholi, previously Sarah Millican!). I've tried a couple of other American ones too but get on well enough with this. @thisusernameun - if it keeps cutting out it's maybe that you need to lock your phone so you're not hitting it while running, which I have done many times in the past!

KatieRobin · 03/01/2020 13:52

@CormoranStrike I get that feeling too when it’s not a run day! I totally understand what all the hype about this running thing is now! I love it!

CormoranStrike · 03/01/2020 14:24

I’m not sure I love it @katieRobin but I’m not yet ready to ditch it. Which is a big improvement!

thisusernameun · 03/01/2020 21:11

Thanks. That's the one I use as well. Will make sure I lock it...

Wowserme · 03/01/2020 23:36

I didn’t keep up the running Smuggy and yes it’s all gone back on and some 😩

PassingIntoTheWest · 03/01/2020 23:43

Oh God, can I join please? It will be the third time I've done C25K - it totally works, I'm just a lapsed runner 😄.

PlaymobilPirate · 04/01/2020 13:07

Sports bra arrived!! I'm in!

Hattie78 · 04/01/2020 13:41

I'm contemplating this but I'm seriously unfit and have never been able to run far but I'd love to be able to. This thread has inspired me. Might venture out under cover of darkness tonight!

Ulysses · 04/01/2020 16:15

Just do it @Hattie78!

I've done W1D2 around the loch near me. I do feel a bit awkward acknowledging people out on their walks, especially when I need to transition from walking to running but once you get going its great. Getting out the front door is the hardest part though.
