What were you doing 20 years ago today?

I spent the day sleeping in readiness for working the night shift in the emergency call centre/control room of the water company where I worked. I started work at 6pm and was due to finish 6am on New year's Day (although we were stood down about 3am, so I was able to collect DH from the party he'd gone to).

Brewing a millennium baby who’s now nearly 20 and doing a maths degree!

PurBal · 05/01/2020 09:08

I was living in Caracas, Venezuela. Much safer then than now. Always get a little teary when I see it in the news.

GoneWishing · 05/01/2020 09:25

I'd had a falling out with the friends I was supposed to be out with (over her abusive dipshit of a boyfriend), so I spent the night with DM and one of her close friends, who came to stay overnight. (DF was at work all night watching for Y2K problems.) We sat around in our pyjamas, ate snacks, drank wine and watched on TV while the millennium changed in various countries, one timezone at a time. DM and her DF gossiped together and tolerated my presence quite nicely.

On that night I was in the Millenium dome - now the O2 Arena.

Part of an invited audience to see my daughter Abigail perform at 125 metres an aerial ballet with her performance partner Zac.

Dome publicity had placed photos of these two all over the world, supposedly nude and created a sensation so the audience were agog to see exactly how these two would be clad - they were not nude!

On the night it had been an absolute nightmare getting to the Venue and I was completely stressed out worrying that I might not get there at all. Anyway clad in my House of Usher Kimono and killer heels, I was finally placed in a seat. But as soon as the violins began the play the Bach Double Violin Concerto, I was on my feet and looking upward. Was I proud? To the point of bursting. There was my girl performing in front of the Queen and other members of the Royal Family, half the then Govt and me. Oh and 10,000 others. Phew!

Now whenever I hear this piece of music - as I did this morning I get the goose bumps all over again.

On London Bridge with DH and a bunch of friends watching the fireworks after spending a few hours in the leadup having champagne and smoked salmon blinis.

Pipandmum · 06/01/2020 08:53

At a crap party with loser boyfriend.

tiedy · 06/01/2020 21:08

I was 15, got drunk at my neighbour’s and danced with my gran. My dad had to put me to bed

AnyFucker · 06/01/2020 21:10

Pregnant, fed up and making one glass of bubbly last 4 hours.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 06/01/2020 21:12

Partying on Bondi Beach Grin

It was cold I remember that

pallisers · 06/01/2020 21:14

At a friend's party with dh. I was pregnant with my second child. The toddler was asleep on a pile of coats in a bedroom.

theSnuffster · 06/01/2020 21:23

I'd just turned 12. My brother and I stayed at my grandparents, I assume so our parents could go out. I remember my brother taped some rope lights together to make a '2000' and hung it from the bedroom window.

Burlea · 06/01/2020 21:26

Informed at a house party that the gossip around town was Dh having an affair. Not true as unless I helped him out every night or while he was in hospital, he was recovering from a car accident with a broken pelvis, broken legs and broken arm. Never went out on his own for over 3 months.
This was his first proper night out. Still laugh now.

Pinkstars2501 · 06/01/2020 21:30

I was just about to turn 13. Was at a millennium street party with my family.

Alyic · 06/01/2020 21:39

My cousin and I had planned for years to do Trafalgar Square NY Eve 1999, we had lost touch when it actually arrived. Work would not allow me my usual 2 week holiday, as the computers were supposed to not work and I was the only person in finance that understood manual double entry book keeping. I would have still being trying to finish it, to this day, massive international business lol.

We had a few friends round and then went on to a neighbours party, I'm sure it would have been a lot better in Honolulu where I was supposed to be.

toffeeghirlinatwirl · 06/01/2020 21:56

House party at brother in laws. PIL were miserable as sin. Kept telling us to turn the music down because they wanted to watch the tv build up. BIL bought a shitload of fireworks. That was the first year I ever remember fireworks on NYE.
SIL's DF used to be in a band and brought his acoustic guitar with him. We all crowded into the tiny back kitchen for a good old sing song and left the miserable sods watching telly in the living room.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 06/01/2020 21:59

Was in the pub with my new boyfriend and some of his mates.

10 years the boyfriend is now DH of 13 years and we have a DS(6). Didn't see that coming in 1999 Grin

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 06/01/2020 22:02

10 years on?? Clearly I meant '20 years on'. Doh! It appears my mathematical ability has deteriorated since 1999

purplecorkheart · 06/01/2020 22:20

Crying. My father insisted on hosting a dinner party. He got obnoxiously drunk and insulted everyone. We had guest staying that night who I had to beg to stay because I was afraid of what he would do if it was just my mother and myself. (I was in my early teens).

Thankfully it was a massive walkup call to my father when we all family and guest called him out of his behaviour and it has not been an issue since. I still hate New Years though.

redeyetonowheregood · 06/01/2020 22:36

Pre-children. Spent it with my best friend in my flat having a takeaway and a sing along to kareoke videos! We were both on early shift the next day (nurses). She died two years ago and I was remembering our millennium celebration this new year's eve. Time goes by so so quickly.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 06/01/2020 23:24

I was at home terrified...i was 25 a mother of 2 toddlers and my mum had just been diagnosed at 52 with terminal cancer....i sat there at midnight and knew my world was going to implode within the next few months.....2000 was absolutely the worst year of my life....my lovely mum died in August....my marriage failed and my darling dad also died at 56...a heart attack im sure from the stess of knowing his wife was dying.

upanup · 06/01/2020 23:37

Went with my siblings and dad to watch the fireworks by the river. We had sadly lost my mum to cancer earlier in the year and it was the first New Year's Eve without her. I watched my dad with tears streaming down his face at the stroke of midnight, totally heartbroken in that huge crowd. It still hurts to think of that. God I hate New Years and am always glad when it's over.

Dualnatkids · 09/01/2020 13:45

We buried my Dad that afternoon. It was my son's 7th birthday and I was six months pregnant. Not a great day or start to 2000!

wheresthedoobrey · 05/04/2020 02:36

1999? OMG! I was 25 years young (some 8 years prior to becoming a mummy!!). I went with a friend to Covent Garden for an expensive meal, before joining the masses (whilst ridiculously scantily clad and freezing!!) for what seemed like an eternity, awaiting the Millenium fireworks over the London Eye. We were all packed in like sardines. Massive struggle trying to get on a packed tube train, with drunks falling about everywhere - including one woman collapsing on top of me! Happy days.

Bleubell · 05/04/2020 03:27

I was at home with my mum and dad, patiently waiting until midnight for my gooey alien thing to have babies 😂 I was 6 in 1999.

Please tell me people remember these?!
