What were you doing NYE 1999?

What were you doing 20 years ago today?

I spent the day sleeping in readiness for working the night shift in the emergency call centre/control room of the water company where I worked. I started work at 6pm and was due to finish 6am on New year's Day (although we were stood down about 3am, so I was able to collect DH from the party he'd gone to).

Went for a curry with parents before going to the local pub to see in the New Year. Got home about 1/1.30 in the morning. We all went to bed. About 30 minutes or so later the phone rang. It was the security company responsible for the alarm at the company my Dad worked for. The alarm had gone off, and, due to 17 year old me answering the phone, he was the only key holder they could get hold of. As punishment, Dad made me walk with him to the company (1.5 hour walk away) and then back once it had been verified there was no break in. I was never forgiven for that.

I was working at Disneyland Paris - we all wanted to be scheduled for the party shift!

Fifthtimelucky · 01/01/2020 13:42

Had a very quiet night in with my husband watching the river of fire, which as others have mentioned, was a complete let-down.

There were fireworks locally but I couldn't summon up the enthusiasm to go as we had a two year old and an 8 week old and I was keen not to disturb them.

We had moved house not long before and didn't have any local friends at that point, and no family living anywhere nearby.

It was the last Christmas/New Year with th ex. We had an amazing Christmas and New Year for all of us inc 4 youngsters to bring in, 2000.

9 months later I walked out with my 4 youngsters and our clothes only. I think the reasons are obvious. Should have left long before I did. Went through hell in the aftermath. Never once regretted leaving. Pity I didnt do it before I did. Just glad I did do it eventually

At home, having a party. I was extremely pregnant with twins though so not much movement possible!

New York, baby! At a house party with a bunch of friends. I remember they showed midnight celebrations all around the world on TV and so we celebrated twice - once for London then again for NY. I think I was drunk for about 12 hours. This year I think I was in bed by 10 Grin.

DanceItOut · 04/01/2020 17:43

I was 10 so I was probably sleeping 😂

Ormally · 04/01/2020 17:44

I was in Vienna where I lived 1999-2000. Invited for dinner with my OH (who didn't live there and was visiting) by lovely friends. I remember the Vienna fireworks and concerts being on the TV while we were eating, and us still being at dinner and eating/drinking at 3AM! Walked home, not far, in banked up, luminous, icy snow and frozen kind of fog but with many people throwing fireworks and firecrackers about - I suppose there's less of a risk - though not none at all, with a whole lotta snow.

I was in hospital: I had had a missed miscarriage and needed a d&c. It was my third miscarriage. A sad way to start the new year/ century/ millennium.

Ejkj17 · 04/01/2020 17:49

I had a car accident and fractured my pelvis and hips on 1st December. I got out of hospital on Christmas Eve but was still on bed rest mainly. My parents had set up a bed in their living room for me and my then boyfriend bought some fireworks to set off in the garden bringing the party to me. Siblings and a couple of friends came to join us. I was 20 years old.

At a fancy dress party. DH was a medieval jester, I’d hired a medieval style dress with long trailing sleeves and pointy hat. He demolished his mincing boots doing the conga and I’d to queue up next working day with all the many other folk having to pay for lost and damaged stuff. Oh, and I tried to persuade him we should have a Millennium baby. I’d totally forgotten he’d had the snip in 1985.

We spent a few days in Cornwall and NYE 1999 found us in a lifeboat centre, watching the fireworks and beacons being lit along the coastline. On New Year’s Day, we were on the beach, rock pooling and paddling in our wellies. Our 4 sons still remember it as a unusual beach holiday!

Drinking Malibu in Trafalgar Square, bring all nonchalant and youthful about the whole thing.

Angelil · 04/01/2020 20:19

I was 13 and in Florida with my family on holiday, so we saw the New Year in twice: once for the UK new year at 7pm or so with drinks on the hotel room balcony, then once at Florida midnight with mocktails in the hotel bar/restaurant :)

FriendofDorothy · 04/01/2020 22:02

At Edinburgh Castle at a Texas gig. It was fabulous.

Oct18mummy · 04/01/2020 22:50

18 and heavily pregnant! Went to a friends house party and then a family party where someone let off a firework and it went/burnt right through a ladies skirt

Sparksflying100 · 04/01/2020 22:55

We walked to the Embankment to try to watch the ‘river of fire’. As others have said it was a total flop so we just turned round and walked back home. I lived really near Tower Bridge so loads of friends stayed with us, bodies everywhere. My strongest memory is being able to walk back along the middle of all the closed roads and through the Embankment tunnels, chatting nonsense to complete strangers! 🤪

legogal1 · 04/01/2020 23:04

Sorry think that last post was in the wrong place

Naylor22 · 04/01/2020 23:06

Asleep 😬🙄🤭
Still find it hard to believe that I actually slept through it lol

Middersweekly · 04/01/2020 23:09

Me and my friend were on the London Underground (Piccadilly line) after a failed trip to meet a bloke who was too pissed to pick us up from the station ( we were supposed to be going to a NYE party). We decided to head home but it struck midnight as we were still on the train. Both ourselves and all the other passengers descended into train party mode, singing, dancing and smoking. 🤣🥳 When we got off the train we walked past someone we knew who was at a large wedding after party. We gate crashed that for about an hour and then staggered back to mine where my mum was hosting a small party. Carried on drinking and then crashed out!

nancyclancy123 · 04/01/2020 23:10

I gave birth to my first dc in November 1999. My Mil and Fil looked after our newborn so we could nip to the pub to see the New Year in.

Amelia910 · 04/01/2020 23:16

I was 9, remember staying up til midnight and being incredibly tired!

Mollypolly2610 · 05/01/2020 00:40

We were living in India (DH work) and celebrating my birthday at a huge event in Bombay.

expatinspain · 05/01/2020 09:05

I had an argument with now ex husband and the lovely NYE we had planned went to shit as he stormed off and refused to answer his phone. I went out with a mutual friend and his brother and had an ok, but not particularly great night and stayed at his brothers slightly gross house mikes away from where I lived and had to trek back hungover and a bit sad the next day. Not the best NYE.
