What were you doing 20 years ago today?

I spent the day sleeping in readiness for working the night shift in the emergency call centre/control room of the water company where I worked. I started work at 6pm and was due to finish 6am on New year's Day (although we were stood down about 3am, so I was able to collect DH from the party he'd gone to).

In bed with “morning sickness” which went on through the day, and the night, for months Grin

goose1964 · 31/12/2019 22:37

Took the kids to a nye party at our rugby club with fireworks at midnight. The adults party was in a marquee on the pitch and it was freezing.

Stravapalava · 31/12/2019 23:36

One of my first "proper" nights out, slightly underage and photographed for an exhibition! Ooops.

I managed to stand up for the first time to see the new millennium in. I had an paralyzing disease and was so happy!

Mitsouko67 · 31/12/2019 23:50

Jumping up and down with my husband and friends on the slightly bouncy Millenium bridge in Dublin! Happy days...

francienolan · 31/12/2019 23:53

I was 9 and my hometown had a festival type thing with fireworks. They tried to keep it up but it fizzled out after 3 or 4 more New Year's.

Fourfantasticfrogs · 31/12/2019 23:55

I was in Paris with the hordes on the bank of the Seine with my brother and sister in law each with a bottle of good french champagne. Had lived in Paris for 18 months and watched the countdown to the millennium on the Eiffel Tower. Nice memories.

CalmConfident · 31/12/2019 23:55

@CormoranStrike I was at a murder mystery party too...but got too drunk to remember who the murderer was !!! Were you in Warwick by any chance...Grin

BoswellsBollocks · 31/12/2019 23:58

Went to the town park to watch a ‘spectacular’ light show with my then BF and a couple of friends. The light show was fucking awful so we took some cider to a church yard, I took a piss against a wall, we then went to the town square to watch the mayor count down to the huge crowds of about 15, then paid over the odds to get in to our local.

Overrated.

I was still living in the U.K. and had a brand new baby. We went to a huge party while my Nan babysat. Lovely days. She is no longer with us, but happy she saw my babies grow into lovely adults.

15, at a mates house party, utterly heartbroken because my ex boyfriend has got together with my best mate at Christmas. It took the entire next decade to be unbroken.

Cdl84 · 01/01/2020 00:16

I was 16. Got drunk for first time at a friends house. Tonight my 4 month old woke up at 11.55pm to celebrate new year with me (I was asleep!).

weegiemum · 01/01/2020 00:16

I was pg with dd1 so only had a v small glass of bubbles.

My dad had fallen the previous day and was having surgery on his knee. We were staying with my stepmum. We heard at 11;45 that he was out of theatre. It was a calm, still night so we lit lots of candles on the garden table and drank champagne. Watched the fireworks of 2 towns from afar. One of the loveliest New Years I'd ever had.

SoleBizzz · 01/01/2020 00:20

Sat by my new babies incubator as he was about 2lb then and 2 months old, wondering if he would live or not.

Bouledeneige · 01/01/2020 00:20

I was away with my H, BF and BF'sH in a cottage in the countryside. My best friend and I were first time pregnant with our Y2000 babies. We went to fireworks in Ludlow and dreamt of our future families and our next century lives.

We remain best friends, as are our families (5 DC between us). My H has fallen by the wayside but the friendship with her and her H is stronger than ever. Bless my life, my children and my dear friends.

ThunderboltandLightning · 01/01/2020 00:22

Recently dumped, I went on a solo holiday to Finland dog sledding. NYE itself was at a barbecue in the forest. It kicked off the start of an amazing year of traveling solo and self discovery.

Claphands · 01/01/2020 00:22

Was out locally in London with my friends, we had bought tickets for a local bar and it turned out to be crap-we asked them to turn the music up and they refused so we cut our losses and went to the pub next door and drank vodka red bull all night 🤮 then walked home. It was a disappointment really.

slipperywhensparticus · 01/01/2020 00:22

Pregnant and at Yates because babys daddy was working there it was free soft drinks that night I drank so much lemonade my pee fizzled the next day

twoheaped · 01/01/2020 00:26

Working at a military Air base in the IT data centre.
Having worked for 2 years getting y2k ready, it was the culmination of a great deal of work.
Only one problem cropped up that wasn't insurmountable.
We did good!

I was home for 5am.

Groovee · 01/01/2020 00:30

Pregnant, smugly thinking I had 6/8 weeks before the baby would come. 3 weeks later a baby arrived!

Went out for Chinese then dropped by the in-laws then on to a house party. Got home at 5am.

DelphiniumBlue · 01/01/2020 00:32

At my friend's with our young children - both our husbands were working. Ds2 was sick at about 11.55, just as we'd got the champagne out, and I had to rush him into the bathroom. Where we stayed for the next 2 hours, with him screaming every time fireworks went off, and crying because he was a bit phobic about being sick. So my poor friend was downstairs with all the other children and no one to toast in the new year/ century with.
DS2 is still a partypooper.

YearofMisAdventure · 01/01/2020 00:35

Some of these memories are lovely especially the childhood ones.

I was with college friends joining the crowds in Brighton, it was freezing. We went to watch the bands and fireworks and a big sea mist came in, it was quite spooky.

ALifeMoreCurious · 01/01/2020 00:39

Dancing on a beach in Thailand, under the stars and fireworks, thinking ‘this is the perfect opportunity for OH to propose! It’s going to happen!’

Nope.

Brilliant holiday though!

Bluebutterfly90 · 01/01/2020 00:40

I was 9, my mum had a party and I was mostly in the next room playing video games with the other children there.

We did all come through to the living room to watch Big Ben and somebody shook up a bottle of champagne all over the living room. I remember that because it got in my hair. I've never liked champagne!
