What were you doing 20 years ago today?

I spent the day sleeping in readiness for working the night shift in the emergency call centre/control room of the water company where I worked. I started work at 6pm and was due to finish 6am on New year's Day (although we were stood down about 3am, so I was able to collect DH from the party he'd gone to).

Babysitting for friends parents friends children. They left us a bottle of champagne. Felt very grown up!

Bloodybridget · 31/12/2019 19:55

I was in a cottage by the Pembrokeshire coast with two friends. We wrote down what we wanted to leave behind in the new year, went outside at midnight and burned the bits of paper. Heard fireworks in the distance. Next morning I drove into St David's early to buy a newspaper, it was a beautiful day.

Trying to get our DC to sleep, then spending a couple of hours comforting one who was terrified of the fireworks.

Working my first ever shift in a call centre for an emergency service. I was on a 999 call at midnight! Didn't seem very professional to break script and wish the caller a happy new year. We were all given half an inch of champagne in a plastic cup. Oh, and double time plus £250 Smile

Someaddedsugar · 31/12/2019 19:57

At the Quayside fireworks in Newcastle and there were so many people and a really excited atmosphere. It seems so long ago now!

Just to say I'm loving this thread. I commented earlier about being on Sydney harbour. I'd left London a couple of months earlier, all my flatmates were planning to go to some massive dance party, reading here the Gatecrasher one in Sheffield sounds likely, was that with Chemical Brothers? I remember it was meant to have them and DJs were on a platform above everyone's heads? I was well jealous i wasn't able to stay in the UK

I was trapped in an abusive relationship. My ex was a drinker and self harmer and was verbally, mentally and increasingly physically abusive. I had a one year old DS. I managed to scrape together enough money to make a small cake for new year and just prayed my ex would soon have drunk enough to pass out and leave me alone. In May 2000 I left for good. I can't believe that I will celebrate my 20th freedom day soon and even though I'm in the middle of some more crap right now nothing compares to the fear of that time. I'm so happy to be here watching crap tv and stuffing my face with takeaway tonight.

That’s where I should have been! Rather than bloody South Korea

Suffolkcatlady · 31/12/2019 20:05

I was 31and in San Diego and dating my boyfriend (who's now my husband) and we were having the time of our lives. Spent the day in bed watching NY on TV from all over the world - then we went out and partied in San Diego. - house party followed by a club. Fast forward 20 years later - got two teenage kids and I'm generally knackered! Sitting here on my bed with the dog curled up at my feet, will probably have a glass of wine soon then fall asleep!!

LolaDarkdestroyer · 31/12/2019 20:07

Ooh at passion all-nighter at emporium! Raving like a good en in fluffy boots bra top and glow sticks!!!

Crunchymum · 31/12/2019 20:08

One and only time I've ever been to the river (and I'm a life long Londoner). Was utter bedlam. I was on Blackfriars Bridge and I dont know how an ambulance would have made it through all the hoards of people if it had been needed.

Was with my then BF and some friends but we got separated from the main group. I chugged a bottle of champagne, drunk cried and we walked an hour home. Hit a few bars but it was atmosphere-less so was in bed by 2am (I was 19!! 2am was very early Grin)

fantasmasgoria1 · 31/12/2019 20:10

I was at work, i got a £250 bonus for working it!

Skyejuly · 31/12/2019 20:11

I was 12. The only nye I ever recall spending with my grandparents!

EnormousDormouse · 31/12/2019 20:13

Drinking lots of fizzy wine (cava not prosecco in those days!). We went to several street parties, best being the one where a load of houses had taken panels in their fences down so you could go from garden to garden. Lots of DIY fireworks at midnight, more drinking, and I think we wombled home over a very long time at around 3 or 4, and almost got drawn into a party that was still going on at the scout hut. One of those rare evenings that went perfectly - right amount of booze, right company. A very happy memory.

SheSnapsThenSheFarts · 31/12/2019 20:19

@Animum2 I can think of worse ways of spending millennium NYE than making doughnuts - as long as you got to eat them too!

Especially if it was Krispy Kreme you were making Smile

Belfastbird · 31/12/2019 20:20

In Bristol watching Massive Attack then massive house party in our tiny flat til morning...tonight I'm about to do the washing up and might watch a film later...

Parttimewasteoftime · 31/12/2019 20:20

Fireworks on Plymouth Hoe with a absolute nightmare bf. Was very beautiful night that unreal what if feeling (was very young).

Alpacathebag · 31/12/2019 20:22

I was 11 years old and had a raging temperature, we all had flu in our house! We watched the neighbours fireworks out of the bedroom window and then all went back to bed.

My night tonight isn't much more exciting to be honest although it does now have gin and no flu.

yellowsun · 31/12/2019 20:23

I was celebrating at Exodus free party / rave somewhere on a Bedfordshire Industrial estate.

I can’t believe it was 20 years ago!

CSEpicFailure · 31/12/2019 20:37

Crunchy we could have been stood next to other! Actually saw an ambulance trying to get through on walk back to Waterloo (posted on the thread earlier).

TopOftheNaughtyList · 31/12/2019 20:51

I was at home with DD1 who was 11 months old. I had been back at work 5 months and was waiting to see if all the premonitions about Y2K would come true. Also preparing for DDs first birthday in a few weeks time.

Sandsnake · 31/12/2019 21:02

I was 15 and at one of my parents legendary house parties with my boyfriend of three months. It was an amazing night, culminating in about 40 of us heading down to the beach at 6am to watch the sun rise and have bacon rolls. That same boyfriend and I are currently on the sofa with a takeaway as I’m 35 weeks pregnant with our DC2 and with a four year old asleep upstairs. And the parents are having yet another party... (they’re far more fun than me Grin).

Hazybobs · 31/12/2019 21:11

Went to my (now) ex-bf’s parents house in full knowledge they were out at a party. I turned up in my sexiest lingerie (stockings, crotchless thong and peekaboo bra) and f*#ked his brains out in front of the fire place in their living room as the clock struck 12!

stayathomegardener · 31/12/2019 21:18

We planned to scale the walls of Beeston Castle an English Heritage monument with Dd 9 months old. In a backpack As you do. 🙄
When we got there there were lots of others who were all getting over the walls by whatever means possible.

Must have been 20 at the top ready to watch the fireworks in Cheshire, Shropshire, Wales, Merseyside and Greater Manchester.

We had one huge rocket which we had to carry down again as it was so crowded.

Then we came home and the three of us camped the night in a Gypsy Caravan with cheese and biscuits and Krug.

Was different.
