What were you doing 20 years ago today?

I spent the day sleeping in readiness for working the night shift in the emergency call centre/control room of the water company where I worked. I started work at 6pm and was due to finish 6am on New year's Day (although we were stood down about 3am, so I was able to collect DH from the party he'd gone to).

In Glasgow with my new bloke to celebrate best mate’s engagement. He’s lying on the sofa now and I’m thinking how’d we get so boring

HerRoyalNotness · 01/01/2020 00:45

I was in Sydney. We’d been to the 9pm fireworks and were at my fathers house that I’d met only a few years before. I was too shy to join them at the neighbours. I ended up taking a water bottle of wine and driving to the beach, sitting there on my own seeing in Y2K. I was very sad that night.

StrawberryIsMyJam · 01/01/2020 00:48

I was living and working in the Middle East.
I was a bit pissed ( not all the M.E is dry ) and spent midnight having my foot / leg put in a cast when I broke my ankle falling down some steps.

I was in the special care unit with my DS, who was 6 weeks old, having been born at 29 weeks weighing under 3lb. He's now 20, obviously, 6ft tall with size 11 feet and just started at Bristol Uni.

Blueshadow · 01/01/2020 01:17

I had flu and had just moved in with my dp a few months before. I watched the new year in on the t.v. whilst tucked up on the sofa, sipping water and then crawled back to bed.

Techiemummy · 01/01/2020 01:17

I was 8 years old and thought technology would destroy us.

TowerRingInferno · 01/01/2020 01:20

Very ill in bed with flu.

We lived in London with an amazing view over the city but I felt too unwell to even sit up and watch the fireworks.

Poppiesway1 · 01/01/2020 01:35

Went to the beach to watch fireworks with 13 month old ds1. Then back to the beach to watch the first sunrise and on to my parents for a massive family breakfast.

80sMum · 01/01/2020 01:39

I went to a party in a marquee in my neighbour's garden. Everyone from the whole street was there, including the kids. I think we got home at about 3.00am.

BrokenWing · 01/01/2020 01:39

I was 30 years old, worked in IT and involved in contingency planning for the millennium bug for my company. I was asked to come in at 4am to check all was ok and run some tests and resolve any issues.

Was very pissed off to miss the millennium celebrations so negotiated heavily for doing it.

In the end of preparations were perfect and everything went to plan. Easiest (and only!) £800 for 2 hours work I've ever made 🤣

Spent the night at my auld grannys, with a wee dram, oot her back door, all wrapped up, watching the fireworks all over town. Missed the big parties and merriment but in hindsight the memory is more precious.

TheJesusAndMaryChain · 01/01/2020 01:43

I was 23 and getting wrecked in a pub in Cambridge.

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 01/01/2020 01:48

Watching Texas at Edinburgh Castle then heading to the street party.

GuiltyPleasure · 01/01/2020 01:58

22 weeks pregnant with DC1. Local pub with family & Friends, some of them now not with us. Good times, full of hope, unfortunately significantly better than tonight 20 years later Grin

WTF0ver · 01/01/2020 02:00

Went out to our local "club" with my best friend. We'd bought special tickets for the NYE party but the night turned out to be a damp squib, there was hardly anyone there! As a result of this we got free entry for the following weekend, which was much better. Still felt weird that it was the year 2000. And to think that was 20 years ago now, where has time gone?!

Wheresthebiffer2 · 01/01/2020 02:03

is it bad that I can't remember? (not cos of being wildly drunk, just that it would have likely been a rather dull house party, with friends who had new baby).
It was a lifetime ago, and i really am not sure. i do vaguely remember us all being anxious about the millennium bug, and some people getting ridiculous overtime to be "on call" just in case the computers all crashed.

SukiPutTheEarlGreyOn · 01/01/2020 02:26

House sitting in France. Watching Paris fireworks while inside and warm, cuddling our sleeping newborn. I remember feeling so happy and excited starting the new millenium as first time parents (and also wondering what on earth to do with all the extra candles and torches I’d bought now that it was clear that the millennium bug wasn’t actually going to plunge us into anarchy and darkness).

AlessandraBumbrosio · 01/01/2020 02:50

Christ knows!

EsmeSwan · 01/01/2020 03:06

I was working the Nightshift in a busy hospital!

foofooyeah · 01/01/2020 03:13

Night shift in IT. Had had flu so didn’t feel up to going out anyway.
Got brilliant millennium awards for it and managed to fly on Concorde.

WaxOnFeckOff · 01/01/2020 09:24

Pregnant after 4 years of trying. We walked up into the hills to the south of Edinburgh and watched the fireworks. DH had a flask of whisky. The hill was surprisingly busy but you could only tell by the lights from the head torches and the rustle of the heather and gorse.

foxychox · 01/01/2020 09:49

In Goa on the last leg of an epic 6 week trip around India. Started on the beach and ended up at a party in the forest, all a bit trippy!

Loveislandaddict · 01/01/2020 09:53

In bed watching celebrations on tv, with dh and week old baby.

Animum2 · 01/01/2020 10:43

@SheSnapsThenSheFarts

It wasn't Krispy Kramer though that would of been better!

Animum2 · 01/01/2020 10:44

Sorry that should be krispy kreme

FesteredFairy · 01/01/2020 11:19

Went to friends' for a dinner party - I cooked the food. Friends had recently been to Champagne, so there were lots of bubbles. Celebrated New Year, stayed the night, came home and spent the afternoon on the sofa watching Notting Hill. I may have been a little hungover.
