Couldn't see what's funny about it, gave up after 5 minutes.
Bit cringey

Loved it, pissed they left on a cliffhanger, they defo need a series 4 now though or at least do a Christmas special every year. I get it’s an acquired taste but I love all banter so to me it’s funny, you’d need to watc it before though to get a lot of the jokes.

BackforGood · 26/12/2019 00:02

Spot on @ArgumentativeAardvaark

BoneAppleTeeth · 26/12/2019 00:07

Loved it!!! Fingers crossed this means season 4 is coming next

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 26/12/2019 00:11

The series ended perfectly there was no need to revive it, I’m a big fan of the show but this just did not work for me, on a separate note Gavin’s low sperm count seems to have produced three kids.....

PestoFestivimuss · 26/12/2019 00:13

Well I bloody loved it Xmas Grin

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 26/12/2019 00:19

I loved it! Just wish Smithy’s sister and Dave Coaches had been in it too so they would have had everyone.

Sheridan Smith's career is massive now and I think she's cracked the US, hasn't she? I know James Corden has as well, but he's obviously one of the writers and an integral character, whereas her schedules would probably be extremely difficult to work around for the sake of including a very minor (albeit quite regularly appearing) character.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 26/12/2019 00:20

Did anybody else find it very amusing that Pam was terribly offended on Smithy's behalf at Sonia mentioning his weight - only to then mention her chat with 'Big Fat Sue' in her very next breath?!

VanyaHargreeves · 26/12/2019 00:23

Sheridan Smith is pregnant, no?

Defenbaker · 26/12/2019 00:27

"Oh well if you're never seen it before you're never going to get it. It's not a standalone comedy."

@coconuttelegraph - totally agree with this comment. The running jokes are wasted on anyone who hasn't seen previous episodes. The characters are very rounded and that adds to the enjoyment - you can almost predict some of the lines, as the characters are so well developed.

It's not joke packed hilarity all the way through, more a gentle humour that raises smiles and has a feel good factor. I really enjoyed it.

Defenbaker · 26/12/2019 00:32

PS: I agree - Gavin's dyed hair looked ridiculous! Wonder if the actor has gone grey but was desperate not to look like he'd aged faster than the other cast members? Also, the "Peaky Blinders" haircut didn't suit him. (Was he in that series? Can't understand why he has that haircut, otherwise.)

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/12/2019 00:37

Tbf most of the male population have a peaky blinders hair cut.

isittooearlyforgin · 26/12/2019 00:39

I know what people mean who had reservations but on the whole enjoyed it. Wouldn’t it have been cool if some of nessa’s ex famous lovers could have made a cameo...Richard medley etc?!

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 26/12/2019 01:03

As a fan I loved this. It's gentle, character based humour which is hard to translate into a one off episode, unless you know the backstory.

AlfredoTheFrog · 26/12/2019 01:04

@VanGoghsDog
Harri is the Welsh spelling of Harry

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 26/12/2019 01:08

Smithy didn't sound right. Not the bits where he was talking to Sonia, just in general. His accent was a bit different or something.

LuluJakey1 · 26/12/2019 01:11

I'm so disappointed. I love Gavin and Stacey and re-watch the old episodes. Was so looking forward to this and really disappointed by all of it. The writing was 'thin' and lacking in character complexity. Only Ruth Jones held it together and even then not consistently. I thought the proposal was an awful idea.

Lexplorer · 26/12/2019 01:14

Loved Bryn's old t-shirt - my niece went to Greece....! Lovely touch. Also what was wrong with Fairytale in New York lyrics? Had subtitles on and looked/sounded fine to me. Glad no reference to Gwen's omelettes, always found that boring. Missed Dave Coaches, shame he didn't have a cameo role e.g. Santa. Could've done with being longer but awful ending. She would definitely not have proposed or even said ' I love you'.

drigon · 26/12/2019 01:22

I'm not a massive fan of the programme but I thought it was really good.

Stravapalava · 26/12/2019 01:28

I think the Boxing Day Trifle was a replacement for the omelettes!

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 26/12/2019 01:38

I binge watched it for the first time about a month ago and really enjoyed it tonight

I bump into Matthew Horne regularly . Nice bloke

Glitterpearl · 26/12/2019 01:42

I loved it. And I love that she said she loved him and proposed. The old Nessa wouldn't have done that, but a decade of coparenting has changed her. I loved the scene with her, Smithy and Neil the baby in their house opening presents, it was so touching and lovely.

I love Pete and Dawn, and the bit about the camping trip. I hope they make more.

mrsp2009 · 26/12/2019 01:42

I did enjoy it (although it made me feel
Old seeing how the kids have grown up!) but I think like most one off specials there is always so much hype around them they rarely live up to the expectation. I think perhaps they tried to fit too much in - would’ve been better maybe to do a mini series with 5 or 6 30 minute episodes?

MaggieAndHopey · 26/12/2019 06:57

I thought it was a bit flat in places but I'm still glad I watched it. Loved Nessa's proposal and the ballsyness of that cliffhanger.

MaggieAndHopey · 26/12/2019 06:58

Also Matthew Horne does have naturally grey hair in real life now and looks great on it. No idea why they dyed it for the show.

MollyButton · 26/12/2019 07:12

The only bit I didn’t like was the taps. Good gag of Nessa giving them all the same crap thing, but taps just wasn’t funny.

I actually liked that bit - especially if you look at it from Sonia's point of view and compare with everyone else's. It's like when Great Aunt Mabel gives everyone a pot of her Damson Jam, and everyone is politely grateful and actually after years it is "part of Christmas" and the thing which after Great Aunt Mabel has died the absence of which will reduce you all to tears.

But for Sonia it is just a bizarre gift - and actually Sonia is lacking some social graces in expressing her confusion. I'd personally be having far more whispered consultations with my other half, and expecting some little signals to help me navigate the minefield.
