Couldn't see what's funny about it, gave up after 5 minutes.
Bit cringey

I thought it was a missed opportunity to not take the piss out of Bryn and his new head of hair.

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/12/2019 07:36

Glad no reference to Gwen's omelettes,
I think they were having omelette for breakfast although it wasn't mentioned.

I loved the way Nessa and Smithy were such good parents (despite their general awfulness) and Neil the baby such a lovely, well balanced boy.

80sstyle · 26/12/2019 07:58

I agree the only thing I didn’t like was the taps. The Christmas with the individual celebrations chocolate was funny.

eaglejulesk · 26/12/2019 07:58

Damn, damn, damn!!! I'm in New Zealand and was looking forward to watching this - just noticed it was on earlier tonight, so I've missed it Sad

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 26/12/2019 08:02

I have never seen an episode previously, but I loved it and gonna enjoy catching up on iplayer

Nicecupofcoco · 26/12/2019 08:09

I must admit took some getting into again! I did start of thinking perhaps they should have left it, but, I really got into it after about ten minutes!
I belly laughed at the taps, it just tickled me! I think it was great! The ending though! Smithy and nessa should be together!

Juliette20 · 26/12/2019 08:17

I loved it and cried at the end - did not see that coming at all.

Juliette20 · 26/12/2019 08:18

despite their general awfulness

Eh?

likeafishneedsabike · 26/12/2019 08:20

You can’t expect the same slickness after a decade’s gap, and overall it was a great job. Alison Steadman as Pam always carried the Essex crew (Gav and Mick being supporting characters to her lead I think) and she wasn’t on her top form, so the Essex scenes weren’t brilliant. However, the welsh lot were superb and it worked and hung together as an overall episode with plenty of gentle humour.
Strange world we live in though when Gav and Stace had visibly aged while their parents looked younger than before 😂

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/12/2019 08:24

*despite their general awfulness

Eh?*
Awful but we love them. Nessa's bullying of Gwen to babysit, demanding money with menaces while carol singing, Smithy's man-child behaviour, that sort of thing. Yet they co-parent wonderfully and Smithy makes a point of saying Neil the baby's presents are from both of them although he bought them. I always liked the way Nessa carried the baby round in a sling and talked to him like an adult.

funmummy48 · 26/12/2019 08:26

We loved it. I thought it was very well written and followed on perfectly from the end of the last series. We chuckled all the way through. The only “shocker” was what Julia Davis had done to her face. She looked very unnatural 😳

RuffleCrow · 26/12/2019 08:29

I thought it was good in places, but there was less genuine warmth between the cast than before. Like everyone was trying to pretend James Corden hadn't inexplicably turned into a bronzed hollywood megastar (of all things!) in the interim.

Did enjoy Fairytale of New York and the awkward silence with Sonia and the Camping Trip tho.

Sharonthetotallyinsane · 26/12/2019 08:30

I enjoyed it.

Juliette20 · 26/12/2019 08:34

The only thing Julia Davies has done is aged Confused. I thought she looked amazing as ever.

Benjispruce · 26/12/2019 08:40

We liked it.Will have to watch it again though. I think I know the old ones so well, they have become classics so it’s hard to follow all of those with just one episode that ticks all the boxes.

TooStressyTooMessy · 26/12/2019 08:42

Ah that makes sense about Sheridan Smith then although a video call / cameo would have been nice.

I think James Cordon has a bit of a transatlantic twang now but I expected that after him being in the US for so long.

I thought it was like meeting up with old friends. Not perfect but absolutely lovely to see them.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/12/2019 08:42

Julia Davis has had cosmetic surgery.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 26/12/2019 08:45

Up to Julia what cosmetic surgery she has but I don't think it suits.

Horsemad · 26/12/2019 08:49

It got better for me after about half an hour in.

I'm going to watch again when I'm on my own and not being interrupted by family members. 🙄

NameChangeNugget · 26/12/2019 08:54

Took 5-10 minutes to get going but, once it did it was very good. After the turgid Call The Midwife, it was most welcome

Chloemol · 26/12/2019 09:00

Just watched it, it’s great. You need to have eeen the others to understand

Strawberrycreamsundae · 26/12/2019 09:03

I was completely nonplussed about what was supposed to be so great about the series, let alone this 'special'.
As for Meet the Midwife, utter tosh ☹️

RuffleCrow · 26/12/2019 09:05

It's a shame Julia Davis, with all her edge and wit, has decided to go down the Sky, Hollywood and cosmetic surgery route. I always pictured her aging a bit like Patti Smith or someone with a scowl and a "fuck you" rather than a face full of fillers. She was uniquely beautiful to begin with, now she just looks bland and production-line. Sad

You could say it's her choice, but each previously badass woman who chooses to do this is incrementally affecting societal expectations and norms for the rest of us Sad

Strawberrycreamsundae · 26/12/2019 09:06

C*oops! Call the Midwife 🙄

RuffleCrow · 26/12/2019 09:07

What i mean is, it's much easier to be a woman aging normally in a world full of women aging normally.
