Couldn't see what's funny about it, gave up after 5 minutes.
Bit cringey

Yes just like Smithy did in the original.

isittooearlyforgin · 28/12/2019 10:06

Maybe smithy will say yes because throughout the series he has not been honest with himself about the type of girls that would be good for him, his friends are completely different from his girlfriends. This time he could actually commit to someone he can be himself with. That’s proper romance

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 28/12/2019 10:08

The tap joke was I think meant to be funny because it was just so random with no reasoning at all

Piggywaspushed · 28/12/2019 11:36

Exactly only. I don't get what people don't get. It is a ridiculous present, amplified by the gaga that Gavin and Stacey each got a hot tap.

It's just absurd : no logic to it. Ergo funny.

I liked the bit where they all obediently asked what each other got.

lilgreen · 28/12/2019 11:43

In the original Nessa got them all an individually wrapped celebration chocolate. It’s ridiculous and cheap, that’s the joke.Hmm Some of these comments are obviously from non G&S fans.

Mrsmadevans · 28/12/2019 16:22

I am a massive fan and was fine with the tap gag and took it for what it was until others suggested there was a hidden meaning Hmm

Lexplorer · 28/12/2019 16:31

I presume every year they all get something bizarre from Nessa, we just happened to be present when it was taps

MargotB7 · 28/12/2019 20:30

If you haven't seen it before how on earth did you expect to get any of it? I'm a big fan and I loved it. I found the Dawnie & Pete it very funny.

ChristmasCroissant · 28/12/2019 20:35

That doesn't make something funny!

I have seen it before, but tbh for a programme on Christmas Day on BBC1 I don't think you should need a comprehensive history of it first.

Pinkarsedfly · 28/12/2019 20:37

Dawn ruins it for me.

MargotB7 · 28/12/2019 20:43

It's not a complicated drama either so whilst it's nice to have seen the earlier series for plot detail, it wasn't that necessary.

I completely disagree. You had to have seen the other episodes. This episode was a catch up with the characters. It was not supposed to be a one off comedy sketch of new characters.

The bit where Dawnie & Pete making up would seem totally bonkers to anyone who hadn't seen it before. I thought it was very funny.

I actually laughed and cried at the episode.

Sunshinegirl82 · 28/12/2019 20:49

I do think if you haven't watched the previous episodes you won't get as much out of the special.

I don't watch EastEnders so I wouldn't expect to get much out of the Christmas Day episode.

GabsAlot · 28/12/2019 21:14

I dont agree that something is on xmas day should be a standalone so that everyhne can understand

i dont watch call the mjidwife so i didnt watch it its not compulsory

BG2015 · 28/12/2019 21:42

It was brilliant

Haggisfish · 28/12/2019 21:58

I loved it

Nikki360 · 28/12/2019 22:57

I decided to watch every episode last week because I had heard loads about it. I absolutely loved every episode. So funny! I enjoyed the Christmas special as well hoping for a new series!

CaptainMyCaptain · 29/12/2019 09:13

Exactly, I would have had no idea what was going on in EastEnders. The bit about the camping trip would have meant nothing to people who have never watched G&S but it was a continuing theme throughout all the series.

Absolutely agree. It's just a soap with a script written as if somebody thought "what dumb thing can I say now?" or "how can I cause hilarious confusion by using a Welsh word that sounds a bit like an English one?". As many say, it's contrived.
It will be even worse this time with a woke agenda ensuring even Welsh people can't be mocked.

Brough23 · 24/12/2024 08:06

coconuttelegraph · 25/12/2019 20:53

It's about the characters, if you don't know them I can't see anyone appreciating it at all

So essentially it's a soap..A large proportion of people hate soaps so it's not surprising it isn't universally adored.

Sparklybaublefest · 24/12/2024 08:31

Rob Bryden just said it is written like a soap opera

Thanks Sparkly, great minds and all that :) Explains why it's not my cuppa, as hate soaps.

whiteroseredrose · 26/12/2024 18:29

Interesting. We all loved it!
