At what temperature do you turn on heating?

As title says.
In our house if thermostat drops to 15C DC will tell me that it's Arctic and want the heating on.
15 isn't that cold is it?!

15 feels pretty cold to me, I’d have the heating on. If it starts to drop below about 17 I put it on.

ConFusion360 · 28/10/2019 20:38

We don't turn it on, the thermostat does that for us when the temperature drops below 18 degrees.

Iwouldbecomplex · 28/10/2019 20:40

It's 16 degrees for us

Knockthreetimes · 28/10/2019 20:40

Ours goes on if it goes below 18. I think 15 is pretty cold

dementedpixie · 28/10/2019 20:40

Our thermostat also controls it, set to 18/19ish although it's off during the day but I'll boost it if I'm cold. 15 is too cold for me

Beacauseisaidso · 28/10/2019 20:41

Ok maybe I'm being mean. I could put it to come on automatically I suppose, but it costs such a lot when we already have blankets for snuggling, jumpers and slippers.

19 here

CaptainPovey · 28/10/2019 20:41

Whenever we are cold. My DH is unwell and struggles all year round. If he is cold, its on. I stand by the back door. A LOT. Grin Grin

joystir59 · 28/10/2019 20:41

Thermostat is at 18c here

WhoEatsPopTarts · 28/10/2019 20:43

Honestly 21/22 there’s no way I’d be remotely comfortable at 15!

KirstyJC · 28/10/2019 20:44

15 is pretty cold for indoors, but everyone is different. My brother sets his at 24 which we find stifling! We turn it on if we're cold, or if bedrooms drop below 18 in the evening. We don't have a thermostat on the old boiler so have a timer, which we override if needed.

JassyRadlett · 28/10/2019 20:45

I’d be miserable at 15 degrees.

Ours is set to come on at 18. I sometimes whack it up to 20 for a bit if I’m feeling especially shivery.

We had a few very miserable winters in a freezing flat with zero insulation and rattly windows where we only put the heating on for an hour or two a day to save money, and the bedroom was about 5 degrees colder than the rest of the house. It was awful and I spent most of the time huddled under a blanket. Gas bill was very low though.

I have more money now. I moderate my natural inclination to want to be warm because of the environmental impact. But it’s fucking miserable to be cold in your own home, or to feel you basically have to wear outdoor clothes indoors.

Biancadelrioisback · 28/10/2019 20:45

I've just turned ours on at 17.5°.
Our house has no ventilation so the bathroom windows have to be open so there is always a chill otherwise

Loaf90 · 28/10/2019 20:46

Oh gosh 15 is so so cold. Ours comes on if it drops below 18

LER83 · 28/10/2019 20:46

Thermostat is set for 18/19 usually during the day, 20 at night. 15 is too cold for me!

TeacupDrama · 28/10/2019 20:46

18-20 I would say is normal
if you work in an office type environment the legal minimum is 16C within an hour of starting work having worked in a place which required bare arms below elbows and scrub tops even 16 feels quite chilly
help the aged recommend at minimum of 18C; many people will still feel a bit chilly if under 20C if sitting , 17-18 is fine is you are busy in the house

NeverGotMyPuppy · 28/10/2019 20:47

15?!?!?!
Unless you cant afford the heating then yes I think your being very mean. Nothing worse than being uncomfortable in your own home.

TwoBlueFish · 28/10/2019 20:51

Mine comes on automatically if it goes below 18 during the day or 14 at night.

ColaFreezePop · 28/10/2019 20:56

If your DC are studying 15c is too cold.

Even when I was a student and couldn't afford heating if someone was studying there was an unwritten rule the heating went on when it was under 17. If you were watching telly/reading for pleasure then you used blankets/get into bed.

makingmiracles · 28/10/2019 20:58

WE must be a hot bloodied family then, I’m with you op, doesn’t usually go on till it’s less than 15. Any hotter and the kids start opening windows to cool down! The only exception is when it’s snowing and we have it hotter as everyone’s open and out playing outside!

Windygate · 28/10/2019 21:03

Surely it depends on what you can afford? We have a Nest system so it switches on when temperature drops below 18. We prefer to put slippers and jumpers on but we are healthy and can move around. For my frail and disabled DM we have to set her thermostat to 22. I melt and wear short sleeved tops.

Beacauseisaidso · 28/10/2019 21:07

I worry about cost and environmental impact, we do use the wood burner in the sitting room too.
I think we tend to go on what activities we are all doing as to how warm the house needs to be.
Ah well if we do ramp the hearing up a bit clearly we won't be alone!

Mines set to come on at 15 but its in a stupid place and the main living areas will be warmer than that.

ClientListQueen · 28/10/2019 21:12

Mine comes on if it drops below 15c (it's set to take it up to 18c) between 6-7am and 6-9pm
Otherwise it only comes on if it drops below 5c

Duvetday8 · 28/10/2019 21:20

My thermostat is set at 22
