Unplanned - Abortion Film **Trigger Warning** Title edited by MNHQ sensitive content*

Hi,
Last night I watched a film called Unplanned, which is based on a true story of a lady working within an abortion clinic called ‘Planned Parenthood’. The film itself brought me to tears on many occasions and it’s made me feel very uncomfortable surrounding abortion. I had an unplanned pregnancy with my third child but knew abortion wasn’t an option for me. I am quite shocked by the amount of abortions that still take place within our society. Does anyone else feel this way? I know we all have different views but i just wondered what other people’s thoughts were on this very sensitive topic.

Just to add though, I don’t think HCPs should be recommending as a decent method of contraception. It isn’t contraception. Natural methods can be useful for family planning though IF you’re in tune with your body.

@bbgxd
“I didn't know that was a thing.”

Most do not, you are in good company. Even the other posters did not know and are assuming the pill works on all women if they are taking it. Their thoughts are still centered on social reasons or mental reasons why the woman may not be getting a pill into her each day. No one has even questioned....hey maybe the pill doesn’t work in all women?

I understand what you mean about how men should be held responsible too, but in some cases both man & woman are under the belief that their contraception is working.

Saucery · 22/09/2019 14:39

@bbgxd, no I’m not. It’s a shameful way to describe any woman. I am glad you are out of that situation. Have a heart for the women who are still stuck with men like that, maybe.

We all grow up with preconceptions about other people’s behaviour. It’s not your first automatic thought about someone’s situation that counts, it’s following it up with an acknowledgment that you’re being judgemental, their lives are actually none of your damn business and that if abortion is the right choice for them right now then that’s an end to it.

Of course I would like every conception to be a deliberate act leading to a wanted child, but life isn’t like that. Adding possible painful degrading death via illegal abortion to the outcomes for women shouldn’t ever be an option. Dead on the floor because some people can’t get their head round basic bodily autonomy for women? Nah, get to fuck with that. I don’t even care if a woman was one of the tiny tiny percentage who actively choose abortion as their sole fertility planning option. No one deserves that, absolutely no one.

In a roundabout way it seems we're back to the "worthiness" debate. How did a PP put it some pages ago? Oh yeah, there's real reasons and "bullshit reasons".
There's a certain hierarchy of reasons deemed "acceptable " to have an abortion, with victims (either of abuse/rape,or failed contraception or medical reasons) being at the top and the "irresponsible harlots" at the bottom, with the amount of shame that should be felt increasing exponentially as you go down the list.

It's a fucked up, mysogynistic way to look at things regardless of which side you are coming from.

emilybrontescorsett · 22/09/2019 15:22

The fact remains that humans have sex not just to reproduce.
Back in old times , women died frequently during childbirth and lots of babies died too.
Medical science has helped us move on from that.
People live much longer now and want sex.
Abortion isn't pleasant but it is a solution to unwanted pregnancy.
It may not be the best solution, but neither is expecting women and girls to constantly fill their bodies with contraceptive drugs.

JacquesHammer · 22/09/2019 15:32

Absolutely. I think part of the issues surrounding abortion are tied up in misogyny of women daring to want sex without procreating?

Saucery · 22/09/2019 15:36

Definitely, it’s a huge part of wanting to control or eradicate abortion.

idontbelievethisnsmeistaken · 22/09/2019 17:54

Surely you are aware that it's because they regard abortion as murder and they see women who are willing to commit murder so they can have sex, as basically evil ?

People don't get pregnant "by accident", they get pregnant by having sexual intercourse. They also do not abort babies themselves, thats not how it works, other people have to do it, and of course have to be paid to do it.

I have rather a muddled view of it all and am prepared to admit that. But i do feel uncomfortable about it and the flippancy and entitlement expressed by many on this thread. Why should anyone opposed to abortion, be required to pay so that women can have sex and not have to face any naturally resulting consequences ?

Sagradafamiliar · 22/09/2019 18:04

Pay what?

idontbelievethisnsmeistaken · 22/09/2019 18:05

Pay what?

Money obviously. Taxes you know.

Sagradafamiliar · 22/09/2019 18:06

Are you joking?

BertrandRussell · 22/09/2019 18:08

“Why should anyone opposed to abortion, be required to pay so that women can have sex and not have to face any naturally resulting consequences ?“
Blimey. Some people really are vile.

idontbelievethisnsmeistaken · 22/09/2019 18:09

Are you joking?

Why would I be joking, surely you are aware that a great many people are vehemently opposed to abortion and therefore definitely against being compelled to pay for it ?

idontbelievethisnsmeistaken · 22/09/2019 18:12

Blimey. Some people really are vile.

Your contention is that everyone is morally compelled to provide women with the means to have sex without the natural consequences of the act ? Regardless that they actually regard it as being made to pay for murder. And they are the ones who are "vile". Interesting logic.

Sagradafamiliar · 22/09/2019 18:13

Ah, so you are joking. Phew, you had me going there. I refuse to believe that anyone could be so thick, which is the alternative.
I would never have thought a thread on this topic could prove quite so comical. Good for you, you pull of satire so well.

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 22/09/2019 18:28

"Why should anyone opposed to abortion, be required to pay so that women can have sex and not have to face any naturally resulting consequences?"

Just women? They're not getting pregnant on their own.

WestBerlin · 22/09/2019 18:31

There’s a lot of things that people don’t like paying taxes to support, but they have to suck it up and get it over with, as we all do.

JacquesHammer · 22/09/2019 18:39

idontbelievethisnsmeistaken

Thank you. You’ve proven my point about misogyny utterly beautifully.

Saucery · 22/09/2019 18:40

Taxes don’t work like th......... oh fuck it, why bother, it’s too silly to even respond to as if it’s a reasonable statement Grin

JacquesHammer · 22/09/2019 18:41

Why would I be joking, surely you are aware that a great many people are vehemently opposed to abortion and therefore definitely against being compelled to pay for it

Tough shit really given a proportion of taxes does indeed go towards providing abortion services.

Although I kind of assume that people who are forced birth aren’t going to be higher rate tax payers...

WestBerlin · 22/09/2019 18:42

That’s also working on the assumption that women who have abortions don’t pay taxes themselves, which is bullshit.

Saucery · 22/09/2019 18:42

Tell you what, if you read @idontbelievethisnsmeistaken ‘s posts in the voice of Ian Paisley they get even funnier. In a chilling sort of way.

StockTakeFucks · 22/09/2019 18:44

I'm not paying for you to have sex with no consequences!!! Whaaaa!! You had it you pay for it!!Whaaaaaa!

Funnily enough, people spouting this stuff also resent their taxes going to benefits, housing, schools etc (that's if they pay taxes to begin with)

MyNewBearTotoro · 22/09/2019 18:47

We don’t get to choose what our taxes pay for. There are plenty of other things taxes pay towards that people may disagree with (Eg: a vegan’s taxes funding farming subsidies, a pacifists taxes funding the armed forces) but if we refused state funding for anything and everything somebody might disagree with then we would have to abolish taxes and sell off everything to the private sector as there will always be a minority somewhere against ‘their’ taxes going towards a specific cause.

StockTakeFucks · 22/09/2019 18:49

Are you as annoyed at "taxes " paying for prisoners ? Some of them are actual murderers you know.
