So grey is on the way out, so polish your crystal balls, what colour schemes do we have to look forward to walls, flooring and furniture wise.

Do people really pay attention to this stuff and change accordingly? If I paint/decorate I intend not to do it again for a long while as it's such a pain in the arse.

justasking111 · 18/08/2019 20:14

here is a throwback picture, wonder if it will come back in.

50s and early 60s palettes (pastels, pinks, peaches, coral, baby blue, baby yellow), as well as dark greens and dark navy.

Less primary colour, more introspective shades of deeper colours (dusty navy, hunter green, sage green, muted deep blues, terracotta, burgundy)..

And white.

Hotbiscuits · 18/08/2019 20:14

how funny thing is though that at a certain cultural tipping-point the look just gets everywhere and even people who aren’t interested are gently dragged towards it. This is why everyone had to have a perm in the 70s.

Homeallday · 18/08/2019 20:14

Oh hell I’ve had dark blue with emerald green for the last 3 years, if it comes into fashion I’ll be an accidental identikit

DownstairsMixUp · 18/08/2019 20:15

Thank god. I think grey as a base colour (like a replacement for a magnolia) is fine and will stand the test of time but this Mrs hinch grey, like everything grey is bonkers! Both my neighbours each side are hinch mad and you walk into their house and feel like it's a photo in grey and white 😂

DownstairsMixUp · 18/08/2019 20:15

Seeing a lot of soft pink/pastel colours

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 18/08/2019 20:16

Well, damn.
I was about to paint my nursery grey.

What colour can I do now that's not too much of a headache colour? Safari theme so maybe a green?

envacances · 18/08/2019 20:19

Homeallday can't quite picture it but I really like the sound of dark blue and emerald green.

justasking111 · 18/08/2019 20:19

I wonder if we will be going back to axminster large squares to cover most of the laminate floorings. Axminster was hardwearing, child and animal proof with the patterns

Grey is just a neutral though. Anything can be added to it to.

justasking111 · 18/08/2019 20:21

I have always liked greens, so restful, have had some variation on it in every house we have lived in. The latest incarnation being duck egg and teal.

To be fair there’s lots of white too as it’s a featureless 60s box house with low ceilings so it can’t take colour like a high ceiling house. They’re beautiful colours together, think of a peacock.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 18/08/2019 20:26

Woodchip wallpaper!

Only joking!

Thatnovembernight · 18/08/2019 20:31

I’ve seen a lot of Victorian influences with the dark, jewel colours and decorative tiling on hallways and outdoor paths (though without the fussy frilly bits and patterns). Also Victorian /old school basins and taps. Brass fittings instead of chrome. But mixed up with contemporary art and rugs etc. I saw it as a move away from the whole Scandi thing as well as the grey phase.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 18/08/2019 20:33

I agree with previous posters grey is a neutral it goes with anything pretty much so as background I don’t see it going away anytime soon, I agree though that the full grey walls, grey carpet, velvet grey sofa and mirrored furniture is a grim look and needs to go.

LolaSmiles · 18/08/2019 20:35

I think dark blues seem to be becoming quite popular.

I still like grey though and will be keeping my grey rooms.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 18/08/2019 20:36

Yes Scandi is so ubiquitous now, though it does sit well in certain style homes so I think it will continue for a while yet.

ZenNudist · 18/08/2019 20:37

I know grey is over as dm has redone her perfectly lovely hall in it. I am not a fan. Previously she got red splotchy flowers on the drop wall and brownish tone carpet well after that look bit the dust.

Me ive nearly avoided grey apart from a fawn coloured twigy wallpaper on a chimney breast in my otherwise cream black and wood kitchen. Im not one for strong colours and most of my house is creams and golds with pattern wallpapers and no pictures photos or ornaments.

I like it and it suits my Victorian house. Grey was never going to work unless i redid everything.

Carpetburns · 18/08/2019 20:39

Navy

TheJoxter · 18/08/2019 20:39

Judging by the group I'm in on facebook, farrow and ball ‘stiffkey blue’ is the new grey

Leftiefterson · 18/08/2019 20:39

Thank god! I have one grey bedroom and it’s just so drab. A friend of mine has ever colour in her house painted grey. I just don’t get it.

picklemepopcorn · 18/08/2019 20:41

I'd like the Axminster back! Plain carpet is so hard to look after. I'd go for hard floors and big rugs.

Thatnovembernight · 18/08/2019 20:41

I always think a mix of things works best as when you have a very specific ‘look’ /colour scheme it can end up looking very dated after a while. Also agree that grey will continue to look good as a background neutral (rather than a dominant scheme).

Atthebottomofthegarden · 18/08/2019 20:42

Green.

Did my kitchen in spring with teal and white walls, grey units and copper/rose gold accents. I think it looks fab, I love jewel colours. Oddly I see the teal as green, but most people say it looks blue to them. I’m right of course!
