. Chips are a way of life in the north. Southerners will never understand our ways Grin

Stravapalava · 16/08/2019 21:53

Chinese chips are the best, better than chip shop chips.

We had Indian tonight, DD1 was still up, so I ordered biryani to share with her, when I really wanted something really spicy! Didn't get any poppadoms either!

i've recently discovered black pepper beef 🤤

i would not be wasting space on chips though not when there are chicken balls to be had

Lindy2 · 16/08/2019 22:04

I'm on the London/Surrey borders. We have 3 Chinese takeaways/restaurants in my village and I'm pretty sure none do salt and chilli chips.
You can get salt and chilli squid and salt and chilli chicken wings but not chips.
They do ordinary chips but I always thought they were just on the menu for fussy kids who won't eat proper Chinese food. 😂
I will look out for salt and chilli chips when I next venture north!

dustarr73 · 16/08/2019 22:29

Good to see i have influenced some of you Grin
We dont have a chinese very often but it was so good.

Oh I miss British Chinese food! Here in New Zealand it is much more authentic - I was surprised to see actual Chinese people eating in the restaurants - something I'd not seen in the UK. The food is awesome and I love the Yum Cha style of eating, but I sometimes crave pork balls and crispy beef.

quitefranklyivehadenough · 16/08/2019 23:17

Oh bugger me I'm lying in bed craving salt and pepper squid and Singapore rice noodles

Bluntness100 · 17/08/2019 07:13

Lindy, that's Odd, I'm on the Surrey Sussex border and every Chinese does chips here. You won't have to travel far from London.😁

ExpletiveDelighted · 17/08/2019 07:28

I've never heard of anyone having chips with Chinese either, I assumed they were on the menu in case there was someone in your group who didn't like Chinese food, analogous to omelette and chips on Indian restaurant menus. I share Chinese takeaway with a group of friends every couple of months and no one has ever ordered chips, DH has never done it either.

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 17/08/2019 08:00

I can see the ordering of chips with Chinese being the next MN barometer of social class.

allthegins · 17/08/2019 08:19

I always order chips with my Chinese. Especially salt and chilli chips. I also always have my dinner early at around 5 or 6pm. I don’t know how people can last longer than that. Each to their own. Rice with a Chinese is disgusting imo

chuffoff · 17/08/2019 08:19

Just checked the menu of our local Chinese here in Surrey commuter town. No chips of any description on there. But really I want to try salt and chilli ones now

Bluntness100 · 17/08/2019 08:32

Weird, I just checked the one in dorking, Surrey, we used to use and chips on the menu there. Must be takeaway dependent.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 17/08/2019 08:36

No shit Sherlock.

leghairdontcare · 17/08/2019 11:41

It probably is a class thing. Let's face it, what isn't on Mumsnet? At least working class people like me get to eat chips and egg fried rice and be happy. Wink

Grin

Well this must be a record, 140+ posts on the merits of chips and rice and not one person has mentioned the MN offence that is double carbs.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/08/2019 11:48

Naively, I didn't know that in Chinese takeaways, salt and pepper anything was really 'salt and the hottest chilli peppers known to man' and I thought it was salt and black pepper Blush, so I got a hell of a shock when I ordered salt and pepper chicken or something and I couldn't eat it as I'm a bit of a wimp about very spicy food.

LoseLooseLucy · 17/08/2019 11:51

double carbs

One of my favourite meals is Cottage pie with chips 😬

I'm a common northerner, clearly.

0pheIiaBaIIs · 17/08/2019 11:56

@homemadecommunistrussia Chinese tofu is the best. Especially deep fried. Not all takeaways do it but hunt around, you'll never look back once you find one. In a Singapore curry deep fried tofu is the absolute tits!

IncyWincyGrownUp · 17/08/2019 13:59

Class thing? Nah. I’m common as muck, rice and noodles just taste better to me than chips.

cricketmum84 · 17/08/2019 14:01

Ooh yea salt and pepper tofu is the bomb!

Whoseagooddoggiethen · 17/08/2019 14:02

@allthegins hilarious as rice is possibly the only thing in common between chinese food in china and chinese food everywhere else Grin

MonstranceClock · 17/08/2019 15:10

rice with a chinese is disgusting

This has got to be the most mental thing I've ever read on here.

EggysMom · 17/08/2019 15:13

Either my local chippy also does Chinese takeaway; or my local Chinese also serves chips. I haven't decided which it's meant to be yet, as it appears to do a roaring trade in both (though I've never actually seen a piece of cod/haddock waiting for sale).
