Haven’t seen comedy in ages. Who do you recommend?

OP posts:

Dylan Moran. Many years ago but I laughed so hard I nearly fell off my seat.

ladybird69 · 06/06/2019 20:36

Alan Carr is the best I’ve ever seen live. My jaw ached for weeks after I saw him from so much laughing. Worse one was Jimmy Carr not funny at all, I wanted to leave early but ex refused to as he’d paid a lot of money to see him, even though he was a load of crap.

MegGriffin · 06/06/2019 20:38

Tom Allen is brilliant.

The funniest I’ve seen is Rob Brydon, he was hilarious.

What ever you do do not go and see John Bishop. He was absolutely rubbish and we left at half time.

EAIOU · 06/06/2019 20:38

Michael mc intyre. Was close to tears!!

UnalliterativeGeorge · 06/06/2019 20:38

Rhod Gilbert or Adam Hills

Didiusfalco · 06/06/2019 20:40

I loved seeing Bill Bailey - I went being not particularly bothered about it but had a great time. I would definitely go again. It was a smallish venue which I think helped.
I saw Eddie Izzard years ago and he was rubbish. Just regurgitating his dvd.
Comedy is so subjective though.

Makegoodchoices · 06/06/2019 20:41

Sarah Millican is just brilliant. Also love Romesh Ranganathan. I retain a soft spot for Mark Watson as I’ve seen three of his shows.

Hoping to see Ed Gamble next.

EskewedBeef · 06/06/2019 20:41

Phil Nichol and Daniel Kitson. Very different to each other, but both had me aching with laughter.

WellGoshDarnIt · 06/06/2019 20:41

Going back about a million years - Lily Savage. Just brilliant.

PeoniesarePink · 06/06/2019 20:41

This was probably about 10 years ago now, but my Mum got DH and I tickets to see Jethro. He was funnier than I expected but he was supported by Dara O'Briain who to be honest knocked him off the stage. He was really fantastic live, and came across as very natural/unscripted.

Justanothernamechange2 · 06/06/2019 20:41

I think it depends where and the venue. Kevin bridges was incredible in Scotland but a bit rubbish and "tame" in England. Micharl McIntyre was good at a concert hall arena, but far too quiet and almost washed out by his active stage presence in an arena.
Dara o'briain my absolute fave though

Attache · 06/06/2019 20:42

Ed Byrne & Sara Pascoe.

quaverflavour · 06/06/2019 20:42

Stephen K Amos. We dont yet many well known comedians here so I went to see him purely cos I’d heard of him but he was HILARIOUS. At one point I started to get slightly worried because I couldn’t actually breathe but I also couldn’t stop laughing.

Justmuddlingalong · 06/06/2019 20:42

Alan Carr here too. A small amount of urine may have made a bid for freedom.

MsAwesomeDragon · 06/06/2019 20:43

Ross Noble. He was absolutely amazing! I've seen him 3 times now, the first was when nobody had heard of him, in a local event (I think it may have been in the grounds of a castle in the North East), then I've seen him twice more since then because he is just so good live.

augustusglupe · 06/06/2019 20:43

Russell Brand is the only one where I’ve been crying with laughter. Seen him countless times and he is very very funny.
Tbh I think the key is smaller venues, saw John Bishop and Peter Kaye in big Arenas and it just doesn’t translate.

Watto1 · 06/06/2019 20:43

Billy Connolly was fantastic but it was about 15 years ago. My mouth was killing me from laughing and I was seriously worried that I was going to wet myself!

IGottaSeeJane · 06/06/2019 20:43

I can't answer for "modern" comedians (most of whom are very dull) but I have never seen anyone funnier live than Ken Dodd. Screamingly funny.

Billy Connolly, I’ve seen him umpteen times and have come away with my face absolutely aching from laughing

milski · 06/06/2019 20:44

Sean lock and jack dee had me crying with laughter. I felt ricky gervais was a bit of a let down live.

newnewname19 · 06/06/2019 20:44

James Acaster made me laugh so so so much I had aching cheeks

HypatiaCade · 06/06/2019 20:44

Why not go to a comedy club that has a few on? They're not usually a lot of money, and are a good night out!

Jack Whitehall popped into the Comedy Store when I went recently, trying out some of his new material, and he was very funny. Adam Hills was brilliant. Henning Wen was a bit hit and miss, I think he'd have been better with a shorter session, not an exclusive one where he was on for the whole time.

oldmum22 · 06/06/2019 20:45

Cried with laughter at Tom Allen stand up.
Eddie Izzard was a bit average
MichaelMcIntyre ,funny but at the O2 so wasn't "personal"
Henning Wenn quite funny
Rob Brydon very funny and was able to deal with the banter
Paul Merton and his improvisation group was funny
Ed Byrne, ok but I don't think the audience were with him .

Would love to see Rhod Gilbert
