Haven’t seen comedy in ages. Who do you recommend?

OP posts:

Interesting there is absolutely zero consensus!

Fixmygarden · 06/06/2019 20:46

I saw nish kumar recently, I laughed so so hard! Also, Tim key, Sara pascoe, aisling bea, David odocherty. All brilliant!

HypatiaCade · 06/06/2019 20:46

Oh I agree with Billy Connolly, but is he performing much at the moment?

If you really want a full on comedy session, plan on the Edinburgh Festival/Fringe. You can see loads of utterly fantastic, big name comedians, some brilliant new comers etc.

Stewart Lee. Saw him in Melbourne years ago and he did a sketch about Princess Diana's death, well more about the massive out pouring of grief. It was only a couple of years after she passed and most of the audience (Australian) didn't quite know if it was appropriate to laugh. Me and my friend were hanging onto each other crying with laughter.

bringbacksideburns · 06/06/2019 20:47

Steve Coogan actually made me wet myself from laughing too much. Never happened before or since.

It was a very long time ago when he'd just started doing Alan Partridge and suddenly burst into song doing a medley of Kate Bush songs.

You had to be there. Grin

Bernard Manning and Les Dawson.

Especially Les Dawson playing the piano badly, he was fantastic.

MuttsNutts · 06/06/2019 20:49

Comedy is such a personal thing...

I’ve seen loads and Rob Brydon is my personal favourite - everyone there was crying with laughter.

I find Jason Manford very funny too - seen him three times.

Couldn’t stand John Bishop but then I’ve never been a fan - he’s very over-rated imo.

Henning Wehn - just awful.

Michael McIntyre...ok the first time I saw him but I had very low expectations which helps. The second time he met my low expectations.

I liked Jimmy Carr more the first time than the second as well.

Jon Richardson was ok but not great, as was Rhod Gilbert.

Lee Mack was good, very sharp but a bit too manic for me but not as manic as Lee Evans.

Billy Connolly was good too but that was years ago.

BelindasGleeTeam · 06/06/2019 20:49

Ross Noble. Saw him years ago and honestly bits the closest I've come to wetting myself with mirth. My face hurt so much from laughing.

Russell Howard was good. Stadium gig though, so never as good an atmosphere.

Dave Gorman was very good too.

I'd love to see Tom Allen. He has me in fits of giggles. And Joe Lycett too.

BettyBe · 06/06/2019 20:50

Loved Sean Lock, Dave Gorman, Allan Carr and Miles Jupp.

Was very disappointed by Reginald D Hunter, Jimmy Carr and Steve Coogan.

losenotloose · 06/06/2019 20:50

Hal Cruttenden. Absolutely brilliant.

howwudufeel · 06/06/2019 20:51

Peter Kay.

SwingoutSisterSledge · 06/06/2019 20:53

Mickey Flanagan brilliant night

MuttsNutts · 06/06/2019 20:54

Oh yeah, Sean Lock was ok but I wouldn’t bother with Romesh or Ross Noble again either.

igotdemons · 06/06/2019 20:54

I’ve seen quite a few over the years - saw Russell Kane on tour last week and I haven’t laughed like that for a long time, he was hilarious! 😂 Romesh Ranganathan was very funny too when I saw him on his ‘Irrational’ tour a few years back.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 06/06/2019 20:54

Funniest ever, Billy Connolly. (hence the username, it’s a punchline). Presumably you can’t see him anymore of course. But also Ricky Grover was surprisingly hilarious.

Gigis · 06/06/2019 20:55

Paul Foot. Utterly hilarious if you're happy to have no clue what's going on for the entire show

SwingoutSisterSledge · 06/06/2019 20:57

Sorry to go off track but I would of loved to see Dave Allen live a True Legend

Gellert · 06/06/2019 20:57

Frank Skinner - deals with hecklers really well.

Paul Merton, hilarious first time, not so good second.

Lee Evans - my goodness, the sweat! Had a sore face from laughing so much though.

Joe Pasquale - hilarious every time!

Lee Hurst - disappointing

Jack Dee - so, so good

30not13 · 06/06/2019 20:58

Seen Jasper Carrot, Jim Jeffries, Jason Manford, Phill Jupitus, Joel Dommett, Simon Evans and Gary Meikle.

All excellent but the first and last were the most memorable experiences. Seeing Gary Meikle again shortly and very much looking forward to it 🤗

IreneWinters · 06/06/2019 21:00

Dave Gorman does the best giraffe joke.

UnalliterativeGeorge · 06/06/2019 21:03

@Irenewinters Grin

MrsBungle · 06/06/2019 21:05

Bill Bailey. Hilariously funny but so intelligent and talented too - he plays musical Instruments in his act and his talent blows me away!

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 06/06/2019 21:05

Dave Gorman ... oh that giraffe...!!!!

He’s the one i’ve Seen the most and I think of all the comedians i’ve Seen he is funniest

photogirl89 · 06/06/2019 21:06

Russell Kane, Ross Noble, Bill Bailey and Sean Lock have all been brilliant and will see most again when they tour. We tend to stick to smaller venues too now which are so much better than the big arenas
