Haven’t seen comedy in ages. Who do you recommend?

OP posts:

Dave Gorman is my favourite, Ross Noble also hilarious. Would love to see Dara O'Briain

Sarcelle · 06/06/2019 22:47

I have seen a lot of comedians.

Dara O whatnot - ok but poor diction
Ross Noble - seen him quite a few times. Very funny.
Lee Evans - ok in small venues but too sweaty!
Rhod Gilbert - very funny
Lee Mack - disappointing
Rob Bryson - funny, but a short show
Alan Davies - very funny
Sarah Millican - funny but female comedians obsession with cake and weight gets tedious.
Billy Connelly - multiple occasions, very funny
Jackie Mason - good
Micky Flanagan - very funny
Reginald D Hunter - dull
Bob Monkhouse - a gag machine, surprisingly good looking, nothing like his game show host persona.
Jimmy Tarbuck - not funny, inflated ego

I saw Bill Bailey at a pretty early show, must have been 1994 and I regret to announce he died on his arse... he still had something though.

I'm also convinced I saw Michael Macintyre and possibly Milton Jones very very early on. Local comedy night near me at a club that doesn't exist any more. Miserable sequence of unfunny people including one guy who got a huge round of applause for stating 'I HATE PAEDOPHILES' - oh really? I love them - and I remember this funny posh bloke who just had a very warm presence, and Milton Jones being silly and they were both a welcome break.

A few more...

Frank Skinner - a cleverguy
Jack Dee - better than expected

Sarcelle · 06/06/2019 22:51

Oh, forgot Al Muuray, the pub landlord. Fjunny

Hoggytat · 06/06/2019 22:51

Saw Michael McIntyre at one of the small venues. He was so funny.

Loved Ben Elton when I saw him back in the day. Same venue as Michael McIntryre.

Rich Hall is extremely funny too. Saw him in the crypt below the venue.

My current favours are Foil, Arms and Hogg and Jonathan Pie. Not see either in person yet.

SeraphinaDombegh · 06/06/2019 22:54

Bill Bailey and Ross Noble were both brilliant about five years ago, but I think they both peaked then. My favourite more recent live comedy was Dave Gorman. He's so clever and funny, and I LOVE his 'found poems'.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 06/06/2019 22:55

I didn’t find Bill Bailey that funny

Lurleene · 06/06/2019 22:55

The best live performer I've seen was Abandoman aka Rob Broderick. It was at a comedy club and when I read the line-up I thought he wouldn't be my cup of tea but from the second he came on he had the whole room in the palm of his hand.

The entire set was a rap improvised around items the audience held up (I still have my now famous toothbrush ) and stories they shared. So quick and clever, and on paper not what I expected to like but honestly a pure joy. If you get the chance to see him, go Smile

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 06/06/2019 22:57

Another vote for Bill Bailey. Was very ambivalent about goi g to see him, but I laughed for the entire two hours. Fiendishly intelligent, impeccable timing and vast knowledge, as well as hugely musically talented. My ribs ached the following day.

AWafferthinmint · 06/06/2019 23:00

Greg Davies was hilarious

hellenbackagen · 06/06/2019 23:02

Stuart lee is very good .

And
He name checked Mumsnet 😂

pegspurplecat · 06/06/2019 23:12

Ross Noble - seem him several times and he always makes me almost pee myself.

Most unexpectedly good - Greg Proops

Also Rich Hall was great.

DerelictWreck · 06/06/2019 23:15

Ross noble. My face hurt so much by the end of the night.

Saw both Sandy Tosvig and Nish Kumar as awards hosts in the last 6 months and they were fantastic!

TitchyP · 06/06/2019 23:19

Jo Brand when she was starting out - brilliant
Victoria Wood on her last tour - brilliant

Harry Hill - awful. Although other people were crying with laughter so maybe just me

Would love to see Tom Allen or Russell Brand

YouBoggleMyMind · 06/06/2019 23:20

Michael McIntyre, Russell Howard and Katherine Ryan 👌🏼

EnglishGirlApproximately · 06/06/2019 23:23

RikGrimes I never really got Al Murray then I saw him at a corporation event years ago and he was hilarious.
Love Dave Gorman he’s my favourite. Many, many years ago saw The Mary Whitehouse Experience and they were greeted like rock stars, loads of fun but very much of their time.

NameChangeNugget · 06/06/2019 23:23

Micky Flanagan, absolutely brilliant live. Seen him 4/5 times. The venues are getting bigger sadly but, he never disappoints

NameChangeNugget · 06/06/2019 23:24

@EnglishGirlApproximately

Agree about the MWH. Did you go to one of the Wembley shows?

That’s you that is Wink

AppleDump · 06/06/2019 23:26

@WellGoshDarnIt, Lilly Savage was hilarious. I remember running off the loo during the show and was terrified to go back in for fear of being outed. Which she/he did big time!

Lee Evans is my favourite though and I've seen a few. Slightly disappointed in MM as nearly every joke I'd heard, same with Jack Whitehall.

Lexilooo · 06/06/2019 23:27

I have just got home from seeing Bill Bailey- absolutely hilarious, I actually had to wipe away tears, and I think I may have ruptured something!

Elledouble · 06/06/2019 23:28

Pippa Evans (as Loretta Maine) - seen her three times and laughed so hard every time
Marcus Briggstock - twice, snippy but so funny
Simon Amstell
Stewart Lee

Worst I’ve seen is Milton Jones. Not my kind of humour at all and he makes an awful “uh hur uh hur uh hur” noise after every punchline, like he’s reminding you to laugh.

IdblowJonSnow · 06/06/2019 23:29

Jon Richardson. Cried with laughter all the way through. So clever and so dry. He'd been on his Twitter feed before and worked some of the people (who'd said they were on their way to watch it) into his chat.
Would love to see him again.
Have seen some brilliant little known comedians at comedy nights.

MBM18 · 06/06/2019 23:29

Jimmy Carr and Micky Flanagan Grin

RiftGibbon · 06/06/2019 23:29

I've seen Ross Noble, Eddie Izzard and Bill Bailey loads of times. (Although Eddie Izzard not so recently). Have seen BB several times when I've not been able to breathe for laughing. Hurt my face and ribs laughing at Ross Noble.
I've also seen Adam Hills (good) and Sean Lock (pretty funny but very shouty), Dylan Moran (very funny), Jon Richardson (good but not hilarious).
Going to see Tim Minchin later this year. Can't wait.
