Haven’t seen comedy in ages. Who do you recommend?

OP posts:

Victoria Wood, so funny. Jasper Carrot was pretty good too. I've seen many comedians but these two were the best.

APurpleSquirrel · 06/06/2019 21:35

It really depends on what you find funny - I like stories rather than rapid fire one liners.

I love, have seen & would recommend:
Dara O'Briain
Russel Kane
Greg Davies
Sarah Millican
Adam Hills
Craig Campbell
Rich Hall

Also good:
Josh Widdicombe
Shappi Korsandi
Russell Howard (at small venues)
Michael MacIntyre (ditto)
Sara Pascoe
Jon Richardson
Punt & Dennis
Dave Gorman

Would like to see:
Romesh Raganathan
Nish Kumar
Andi Osho

Not worth it:
Jimmy Carr
Frankie Boyle
Milton Jones
Richard Herring
Stewart Francis

Billy Connolly was also rib achingly funny. I met DH at a club afterwards, one I would never have been in on a Monday. We were married nine months later. We celebrate our silver wedding anniversary next year.

Bob Monkhouse. I am very old
Eddie Izzard - very funny 30 years ago
Jackie Mason - left a damp patch.

twoheaped · 06/06/2019 21:37

Graham Norton - does he do stand up now?
Harry Hill - nothing like his television persona. Very intelligent, observational comedy.
Peter Kay - we were crying.

Vinotinto78 · 06/06/2019 21:37

Tom Stade is very funny (and hot). But Stuart Lee is my favourite. Dylan Moran was disappointing. I also like Bill Bailey, Russ Noble and Vic & Bob. I love the morose, ranty types or bonkers, out-there comedians.

TreacherousPissFlap · 06/06/2019 21:38

I've seen Billy Connolly several times and every time he was amazing.

We've recently been to see Foil, Arms and Hog and thought they were fantastic. DS (15) is a bit of a fan so I agreed to do the honours and take him - I haven't laughed so hard for years Grin

Mythreefavouritethings · 06/06/2019 21:41

Rich Hall had me crying with laughter, and the morning of my mum’s funeral, I played his Bob Dylan song which brought a much-needed smile. I’ll never forget that and it shows what comedy can do at the very worst of times. Recently saw Gary Delaney (married to Sarah Millican, incidentally), very funny.

Davros · 06/06/2019 21:41

Not very helpful but Tommy Cooper, Frankie Howerd and Dave Allen. Victoria Wood was rubbish

SquirrelShit · 06/06/2019 21:42

Jeremy Hardy. Was so sad when he died. Would love to see Mark Watson.

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 06/06/2019 21:42

Chris Ramsey. I literally cried with laughter, for two hours. He's brilliant. I saw him YEARS ago as well as a compere of a new comedy night in Manchester. He was hilarious then too.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 06/06/2019 21:42

Katherine Ryan is very funny,

Puffinhead · 06/06/2019 21:45

Jason Byrne, 20 years ago when he first appeared at Edinburgh. Saw him fairly recently on tv and he wasn’t half as funny.

MrsBadCrumblesClarinet · 06/06/2019 21:46

Tim Minchin was my favourite. I saw his orchestra tour and it was incredible. I hope he tours again.

Dara O'Brien also good, and I saw Lenny Henry years ago who was quite impressive - more acting than comedy, with lots of different characters.

I was disappointed with Eddie Izzard. Quite disjointed and not very funny.

Davros · 06/06/2019 21:47

I forgot -
Jimmy Carr was ok
Russell Brand was better than I expected. A good show overall
Both at the Regent's Park open air theatre

Ginkypig · 06/06/2019 21:47

Jo brand and Jason byrne were both excellent.

Andrew Lawrence did one great show but the other two I went to were not good.

HelenaDove · 06/06/2019 21:48

Would love to have seen Dave Allen live.

PurpleSqirrel if you like the storyteller comedians there is quite a bit of his stuff on you tube.

GlitterPixie · 06/06/2019 21:48

Kevin Bridges

3luckystars · 06/06/2019 21:49

I'm interested to see this thread because I would love to see a good comedian myself this year.
I saw Mario Rosenstock about 10 years ago and it was very funny then.

However, Jimmy Carr was absolutely disgusting, really awful and I wanted to leave immediately. I can't properly describe how low he was.

GloriousGoosebumps · 06/06/2019 21:50

Went to a recording of Live at the Apollo last September. Gina Yashere was absolutely brilliant. Laughed so hard I nearly choked. I saw Sean Lock a couple of years ago. He was very funny. He threw in a reference to Mumsnet so I assume he has an account and uses us for material!

Davros · 06/06/2019 21:51

I've just booked to see Richard Herring with guest Michael Sheen. I've got high hopes for a good evening

bibbitybobbityyhat · 06/06/2019 21:53

Arthur Smith
Alexei Sayle
The Irish guy who wore a long brown caretakers coat, big moustache. Think he's no longer with us
Jo Brand

SheisMammyof2 · 06/06/2019 21:55

Tommy Tiernan.. I blame him for my waters breaking early with DS1! Grin
Would love to see Billy Connolly or Michael McIntyre live.

TwinklyMummaLuvsHerBubba89 · 06/06/2019 21:58

I prefer going to see comedians than going to music gigs.

I've been to countless Comedy Store performances and saw a young Jack Whitehall at one of them who had my crying with laughter. The following week he popped up on a panel show and I felt (unusually for me) very 'current' 😁

Bill Bailey (2017) - didn't know what to expect but enjoyed very much

Billy Connelly (2017..maybe 2016) absolutely fantastic, sad to see he's not as energetic as he once was though

Ed Byrne (2003ish) absolutely hilarious

Eddie Izzard (about 5 times 1997-2000) cried with laughter each time

Sean Hughes rip (late 90's) one of the best comedians I've ever seen, I thought I'd die from laughing that night.

I'd love to see Sarah Millican, Greg Davies and Dara O'brien live.

BrylcreamBeret · 06/06/2019 21:58

Roy Chubby Brown, his humor is so sophisticated.

Just kidding. Bill Bailey had me and my DH crying, the whole room seemed a bit out of control with laughter though tbh.
