Trunk found in new house!

WBWIFE · 02/06/2019 22:48

So we have found a trunk in the loft of our new house..

Its addressed to someone to a boys school that was open in the 1940-1960s.

I'm so intrigued, its bigger than the loft hatch so think we will need to cut it out of the hatch before plastering.

Ideas what to do with it? Use for decorative purposes? I've saw some turned into coffee tables! Or I may use it for toy storage, I love it!

This is going to turn out like the Victorian safe one isn't it....

It’s just like Mallory and the mystery diary! Maybe it has a block of dairy milk pre palm oil inside

SkiingIsHeaven · 03/06/2019 00:35

If you find a board game in it will you be brave enough to play it?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 03/06/2019 00:44

I'm kind of hoping that it will be the cold, dead corpse of Boswell.

HE won't be walking up the post office steps ever again Grin

BasiliskStare · 03/06/2019 00:44

How hard can it be to open that? You are just not trying Grin If no key just unscrew hinges from the back of the lid to see contents ( I believe any dead body over 70 years old is not subject to a murder enquiry ( have not googled) & then take downstairs when builders there. This is an easy one.

But love the idea it may be @BuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll the digitised contents of the great library at Alexandria - wouldn't that be something.
Someone could get a PhD or at least a DPhil or MA out of that - at the very least the BM may be interested.

Would be sadder if it were Perrot himself. ( Though - Poirot did have the Clapham case where the victim was stuffed into a trunk. ( I do not wish to worry you ) Grin

It does look attractive & yes could make a nice storage box / coffee table etc

But all best wishes and do let us know Flowers

TheLoverOfTea · 03/06/2019 00:46

Open it already!

Welltroddenpath · 03/06/2019 00:52

Yes open it already 😂

Cruelstepmother · 03/06/2019 00:58

How are you going to use it as a coffee table if it's stuck in the loft? Are you going to dismantle it, or knock a hole in the ceiling?

GlamGiraffe · 03/06/2019 01:00

Hairpin in the keyhole? I learnt that at school!!
How could you leave us dangling like this!!!Shock
Open it and show us inside!!😂

BasiliskStare · 03/06/2019 01:04

Oh this has tickled me now.So if you can't open it it surely cannot be too hard to research Perrot & the school . It would then be not too much effort to come up with his reports.

Which will be Ok unless they read "Perrot was an able and willing pupil and showed promise in history. If he could spend less time in reading Agatha Christie and more time revising we believe he will do very well in the School Certificate. Unfortunately , due to his prolonged period of absence he may in recipt of a detention "

& then - exams results - "did not attend " Be very afraid OP

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll - would it be better or worse if it were Boswell or Perrot. In some ways I think it worse if someone just bunged the cold lifeless body of their son in his trunk & left it in the attic for future purchasers to find. But that's just me. If it is Perrot - then those who converted the attic so that he could not be brought down and just left him there must have something to answer for Grin - would that be Tort or something worse ? Flowers to Perrot.

Ha ha - this has given me a laugh

JaneJeffer · 03/06/2019 01:13

*I'm kind of hoping that it will be the cold, dead corpse of Boswell.

Do not open it in case his spirit is freed to roam the earth and all its post office steps

SorryDidISayThatOutLoud · 03/06/2019 01:15

I can't stay up any longer - I have to be at the vet early for bunny's annual jab. Back tomorrow to see if any hidden jewels were uncovered!

LonginesPrime · 03/06/2019 01:20

Why would the previous owners have left it there if it were something good though?

user27495824 · 03/06/2019 01:20

Oh, I've invested way too much emotion into previous trunks, suitcases and safes in new house attic posts and they have always been bitterly disappointing. I feel like this is a sign I'm now a long standing Mumsnetter. I won't get sucked in this time. I won't. I won't. chews nails. Please don't disappear OP.

BasiliskStare · 03/06/2019 01:34

But @user27495824 - you will Wink

As will I

In what I laughingly call my brain we now have the remains of Perrot who found a document which told how to find the lost volumes of Alexandria and he stuffed it in his blazer pocket ( along with assorted conkers , bits of string etc ) and hid in the trunk to examine it with his torch.

Bless his cotton socks for keeping such a valuable document for future research .

arganlady · 03/06/2019 01:38

no the hatch is tiny, my DH only just fits through it

Stop boring us with tales of your inadequate sex life and open the damn trunk! Grin

justilou1 · 03/06/2019 01:46

🤣🤣🤣

Badabingbadabum · 03/06/2019 01:51

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll bloody Boswell! I'd forgotten about that again!

snitzelvoncrumb · 03/06/2019 02:21

.

Chickenwings85 · 03/06/2019 02:25

Probably someone's old porn collection and sex toys

Tavannach · 03/06/2019 02:25

This is going to turn out like the Victorian safe one isn't it....

Please explain ..

SinkGirl · 03/06/2019 02:32

OP, this thread will be full of placemarkers before you get it open

Surely the people who converted the house must have opened it before leaving it there? I couldn’t leave an unopened mystery trunk in a loft in case it contained a lost Picasso or the “real” Turin shroud or something

BasiliskStare · 03/06/2019 02:43

We bought a house once and on top of some built in book shelves I found a box file duck taped shut ( so very much less interesting than a safe or a trunk) Imagine my disappointment when ( & I did open it immediately) instead of a map with X marks the Treasure , or the original manuscript of a fabulous novel it was a couple of soft porn magazines. Sometimes the anticipation is more than the reality. But at least I did not keep you all in suspense . Smile

SkintAsASkintThing · 03/06/2019 02:43

Oh they're never anything exciting. It will be empty
