To ask how much you spend a week on coffee?

How much do you spend a week on coffee and how many cups do you have a day?

Me- so I work a lot on district in different areas so I so spend quite a bit of money on take out coffee, generally I choose cheaper outlets such as Morrison's & McDonald's (approx £2 per cup) and usually once a every weekend myself and my partner treat ourselves to costa, Starbucks etc! (Approx £3 a cup) sometimes I do some paperwork in cafes etc during my working day which is worth the money as it allows me to relax but be productive at the same time!

Days I work in the office I use my own coffee jar so money is saved there!

I calculate I spend approximately £9/10 a week? (3 x £2 and 1 x £3) Excluding the price of my coffee jar! Eeek I have never actually realised how much I spend!

I usually don't drink more than 2 cups a day and try and keep it at 1 when i can!

But why is it a wow if she can afford it and enjoys it? I have friends who spend way more than that on wine, or gym classes or hair cuts.

EastMidsGPs · 20/02/2019 17:10

Never drink Costa etc out but at home decent coffee is our indulgence. We love Blue Mountain beans and have recently found a ground coffee we like that is roasted and prepared locally.
However, we only have one cup a day. First thing in the morning.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 20/02/2019 17:11

Very little. Free coffee at work. I take a recyclable cup with tea in it. I try to plan ahead.

It’s the plastic wastage that bugs me.

To be fair, I can totally understand people who go to coffee shops regularly for social reasons

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 20/02/2019 17:17

I understand that if you add it all up over a year it comes to a lot of money, but what some people are saying is that if I didn't drink coffee then I could spend the €600 saved over the year on a nice treat. What people are failing to understand is that the nice treat that I would most like to spend my 'saved' money on is a year's worth of coffee. Grin

I have not been conned by marketing into thinking that I need coffee, I genuinely enjoy coffee. I don't go to the chains because their coffee is shit and I have a very exacting standard for coffee because I take it black and unsweetened. So it's worth it to me to spend more to get better coffee.

Chocolatecheeks111 · 20/02/2019 17:20

I have just got home from work and yet to read entire thread but can any one advise how you can get free coffee at Waitrose? Do you have to be a regular shopper?

I was guilty of another take out coffee today! I spent the majority of the day talking to people constantly which gets tiring so needed the pick me up. I got a coffee in a cafe (with staff discount) for £1.98. It was enjoyable and woke me up so definately worth it.

I don't know about anyone else but I find take out coffees stronger and 'thicker' (frothy milk) then when I make my own instant coffee and bring it in a flask it just doesn't have the same effect!

Jealous of those that have bean to coffee machines, I would love one but may cause a huge coffee addiction! I try to stick to 1 a day... 2 if I am tired!

I love going out for a coffee! But try to keep it an irregular thing as it mounts up. So once a week at absolute most and generally fewer. I go to one of the independents around here and sit in with DS - he has a milk, I have a latte (amuses me in a silly way as of course latte really only means milk Grin) and we share a cake.

I do have at least one proper coffee a day at home though, from my lovely mokka pot.

Slowknitter · 20/02/2019 17:38

OP, you just sign up for a 'my Waitrose' card and then you can have a free coffee on any day as long as you make a purchase of some kind.

TellySavalashairbrush · 20/02/2019 17:46

Until a few weeks ago, £12 per week on takeaway coffee!! Nothing fancy either, just a small cappuccino. However, I didn’t realise they’re about 120 calories ago and I can’t justify spending that much money, so it’s an occasional treat now instead.

reallybadidea · 20/02/2019 17:50

It's only a waste of money if you don't value it as much as you'd value using it for something else. And that's a completely personal choice. Buying a brand new car would be a waste of money for me because I wouldn't value that. The odd takeaway coffee gives me enough pleasure that justifies paying for it. Other people's milage may vary.

Chocolatecheeks111 · 20/02/2019 17:57

Thank you do you know if there is a minimum spend on the waitrose card or is it just any purchase?

I think it's the same at booths!

To those asking I can afford it and myself and my partner enjoy chilling in a coffee after a walk at the weekend so it's something I look forward to!

I also use loyalty stamp cards (I.e 1 free drink after circa 10 purchases)

We buy ground coffee to make our own coffees at weekends, so £3-4 every month or so I guess? Plus the coffee machine cost us £20 (reduced from £46).

I pay £1 per month into a tea/coffee club at work from which I have one cup of instant coffee every day and 2 or 3 cups of tea.

Vending machine at work charges 25p for a drink. I have one mocha a day from there, maybe two on a very bad day...

soulrider · 20/02/2019 18:01

I don't think there is a minimum spend, I've spent 50p and the self service machines still let you put the free coffee through. You do have to provide your own cup now though

Ninkaninus · 20/02/2019 18:04

Oh...forgot the coffee out option. Don’t do it often as only a Costa near to us and I’m not keen on sitting in there. But once every 5 or 6 months I might have a coffee out if I can get to a Cafe Nero or Coffee#1 (or an independent), and probably a slice of cake, maybe about £6-7?

I spend a shitload on other things though. Am going to focus and get a handle on it this year.

legolimb · 20/02/2019 18:08

I probably get two or three coffees per week in cafes. So - £7?

At home we use a cafetiere so probaby two packs of ground coffee per week. £5

I love good tasting coffee. When we are feeling flush we might get a bean to cup machine, but until then will make do.

I can't drink instant. If I am offered it as a visitor I have to refuse and ask for tea instead. I think that is because I drink it without milk, so the taste is more obvious.

JenniferJareau · 20/02/2019 18:18

Take coffee granules and milk to work, hot water is free so only a few quid per week.

Would I like freshly made proper coffee = yes. Can I justify the spend compared to other things I need / want = no. So coffee granules it is Grin

RestingBitchFaced · 20/02/2019 18:21

Nothing I drink about 1 or 2 teas a day. I work in a coffee shop, so could have several free coffees a day if I wanted to. I don't dislike it, just not fussed on it

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 20/02/2019 18:24

£12-15 a week on takeaway coffees from Starbucks. I use discounts-NHS, own cup discount and free syrups because I’m a gold member to get my coffee at a reasonable price Grin

Chocolateheaven123 · 20/02/2019 19:19

About £5-10 a year, max. I don't like really coffee and very rarely drink it. When I do, I go to a local, independent cafe for a cappuccino and a cake, about once or twice a year. If I meet a friend in Costa (again, rare due to work schedules) then I tend to have a hot chocolate.

I drink tons of tea at home, and have a Thermos flask for work. I'm a community carer though, so eat in my car, so I'm used to taking my own lunch/water/tea. I also refuse to spend £3-4 on a tea bag and got water so never but tea out unless I'm craving it.

BlueJava · 20/02/2019 19:21

I thought I was wasting money on coffee - so this year I made a resolution. So far I have only bought coffee out once (it was daily). I went into town with my son and we had coffee and cake. Now I take mine with me in the morning to drink on the train (so make at home), I take in tea bags and just add hot water at work. Definitely a big saving!

Serin · 20/02/2019 19:24

chocolateCheeks111 Re Waitrose, you sign up for a mywaitrose card, then scan that when you make a purchase of over £5.
Our local Waitrose no longer use disposable cups so you have to take your own travel mug along if you want a hot drunk.

I dont spend anything on takeout coffee but do like to go and sit in a shop for coffee and cake with friends. Maybe spend £10 week doing this.

soulrider · 20/02/2019 19:28

Re Waitrose, you sign up for a mywaitrose card, then scan that when you make a purchase of over £5.

Nothing in the terms and conditions to say it needs to be over 5 pounds and i've never had an issue spending less and getting a free drink.

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/02/2019 19:30

About £6-8 a month on beans, that’s two bags. I have a double espresso latte every morning.

Tried a Costa latte on Monday. It was vile.

herecomesthsun · 20/02/2019 19:32

I keep a travel mug in the car, I might take a coffee from home or pick up one (free) from Waitrose in transit.

I usually only stop for a £3 coffee if feeling tired in the course of doing lots of things or need to stop and have a think and a sit down.

CluedoAddict · 20/02/2019 19:32

Zero. I don't drink coffee or tea.
