Or maybe a Describe Your Sitting Room if you don't want to show it :). I need inspiration.

After Christmas I'm starting again with mine. I'm changing the dark grey/blue corner sofa, getting rid of the Ikea bookcases and repainting the nearly white walls. Only problem is I don't know what I'm changing them all to!

I'm (probably) keeping the wooden floorboards, and definitely keeping the tiles around the fireplace.

Any ideas?

What style is the room? For example, I live in a Victorian conversion, sash windows, fireplace etc. I'm not keen on all white anyway but I personally think that strong, rich colours work with that style better than neutrals. What new sofa will you be getting? Other furniture?

mylivingroom · 05/12/2018 15:23

Here's mine, I like a cosy feeling living room. My bedroom is all white furniture with blush pink walls so very light and airy and living room dark and cosy.

Storm it's an Edwardian house. French doors. Rectangular shaped room. I don't really know what sort of sofa I'm going for - I'm completely clueless! My dc are older now so I don't especially need practical, I can have what I want. Trouble is - what do I want?! I'm toying with an orange sofa or perhaps navy, or maybe dark green.

my thank you for the pictures, it's lovely. Very calm and tasteful - doesn't look dark from your pics. I had a brown leather suite when the dc were little, so although I liked it, I would like something different now.

I'm a fan of going bold. What I did was to pick one thing that was definitely staying, for me it was my two large sets of brown velvet curtains. So I googled "what colour walls with brown curtains" and got loads of ideas. One was purple, which I never would have thought of but I went with it and (imo) it looks really nice. Once your walls and window dressings are decided you can work from there.

Because those of us in shit pits aren’t sharing.

CormoranStrike · 05/12/2018 19:05

Cos I took those pics the day the new furniture got delivered - it looks nothing like this now!

Bananajam · 05/12/2018 19:12

@CormoranStrike I have that wallpaper Smile I would take a photo but the room is a tip as DD lives in it and isn't tidy Hmm

I have a dark grey sofa bed and a navy sofa, the same wallpaper as above on two opposite walls and dark grey paint on the other two. White skirting boards and dado and matching navy square footstool. Cream floor length curtains.

PickAChew · 05/12/2018 19:13

Mine has varnished wooden floorboards, slightly scuffed. Magnolia walls with a green patch where I removed the ugly and useless electric fire and several blue patches where I've been busy with tester pots. An assortment of wooden furniture, including some very old and battered ikea levsvik - thankfully solid wood, unlike some furniture costing 4 figures, these days. 2 new, grey sofas and an old, mismatched beige footstool. Blue, slightly motheaten curtains.

Some of the walls need replastering and the radiator needs replacing, ao we're quite happy to live with it until the spring.

Our other reception room is mostly full of boxes!

Some people like their houses like that. I don't get it myself, but our neighbours' house is literally empty, apart from the furniture -- the living room has two sofas and a TV, the dining room a table and eight chairs, and the kitchen has completely bare work surfaces. They take the kettle and toaster out of a drawer when they want to make tea or toast.

When we moved in, we thought they had just moved in, too, but they've lived there for something like twenty years.

I tend to always put things away once I'm done using them, we have plenty of space & storage - plus a playroom which keeps the living room tidy.

Everything we got furniture wise was second hand off eBay or Facebook. We spent the money on the decorating

I have antique duck egg painted walls, big squishy cream corner sofa, a thick shaggy blue-grey and cream rug, cream and grey thin striped curtains, reclaimed oak furniture and grey, duck egg or cream throws and cushions. It's cosy. It's nice to not have wipe clean everything now my kids are older!

Heuschrecke · 05/12/2018 19:31

This is the formal drawing room, but we don't use it very often because the dogs make the furniture dirty.

@startingtolooklikemother can I move in? It’s stunning!
We have magnolia walls, cream carpet and rug, horrible Mexican pine tv stand, two big bright pink sofas (sound awful but are lovely imo), a ‘unit’ made from vintage suitcases and an open fire with big dark wood beam above it and various bright paintings on the walls. It’s messy today but usually passable. I like it, it’s comfy but would like to change the tv unit and maybe have a coffee table. In the future I’d like to replace the sofas because they are becoming quite sunken but think I would go for something just as vibrant.

Santasushi · 05/12/2018 19:51

Oh and house is an old cottage so ‘quirky’ walls that are a pain to hang things on so paintings are a bit random.
