The worst nightclub you've ever been to?

Ziggys, York c.1999. An old Regency townhouse that you would swear was still lived in. Sofas, scatter cushions, and chintz wallpaper on the walls - chintz wallpaper that actually started sweating by 10pm. The main dance floor was down in the basement with only one narrow staircase for access and which must have breached every single health and safety law known to man.

We only kept going because it was two WKD's for £1.50 on student night.

Ooh Witchfrog, Bojangelz was bad, I’ll give you that Grin
Actually, thinking about it, I’m not sure I’ve ever been to a ‘good’ nightclub!!

Titsywoo · 03/11/2018 00:21

Cinatras in Croydon. Looked like it hadnt been refurbed since the 70s. Entry included free drinks that were more water than booze. Dodgy buffet. Full of ladies in their 50s and 60s wearing dresses that a supermodel could barely pull off. Floors were very very sticky.

Where was Watertown? Never heard of it.

PrivateParkin · 03/11/2018 00:23

Ah Queen I had Aussie housemates and we quite often used to go to the Redback - happy days!!

Pagoda Park in Birmingham. Dreadful place except for the DJ in a lift.

claracluck78 · 03/11/2018 00:27

Late 1990s again in York for me - Ziggys was awful, Toffs was always fun but Silks/Gallery was always my favourite. (When we got out of Goodricke Bar that is!)

Itsjeremycorbynsfault · 03/11/2018 00:28

How funny, Toffs and Ziggys!

I had a bar job in Ziggys when I was a student in York many moons ago!

ClenchQueen · 03/11/2018 00:33

Another Hungry Duck ex customer here. The place was carnage. Drinks were six for the price of one so it was literally pints of vodka you got. Most people danced on the bars and tables, usually at least semi naked. Bras being chucked all over the place, people having sex and falling over each other, drinks thrown everywhere. Ain't no party like a hungry duck party.

MissTulipan · 03/11/2018 00:34

Caesars in Streatham in the 90s, all you can drink included in entrance fee...alas I don’t remember much else.

TheSageofOnions · 03/11/2018 00:37

Titsywoo Another vote for Cinatras here. Watertown, I think, was down towards Broad Green near the flats where they shot Mitchell & Webb's Peepshow.

Crimebustersofthesea · 03/11/2018 00:37

Do you think we all danced together to 5ive/britney/ s club in the basement of ziggys?! (actually the music may explain why it was so shit :))

Amyerda · 03/11/2018 00:38

@pipparabbit, manniqui was Oil Can Harry's by the time I got there. They had a male stripper on a Wednesday.. it was the worst, but the vodka was very cheap 😊

ColinsVeryJolly · 03/11/2018 00:40

Wolverhampton First Base C.1998/99

So good because it was so bad.

An old theatre with huge curved ceilings and a huge dance floor with plenty of seating. Great music and atmosphere.

But...

I’m pretty sure it was ran by gangsters who would meet in the basement and looked scary as fuck.
The toilets were horrendous and you were lucky if any had a door hanging on by its hinges.
The drinks were awful, I stuck to water.

AdultHumanFemale · 03/11/2018 00:41

Any number of clubs I went to as a wayward 14 and 15 year old, that never checked ID of obviously underaged girls, but let us in and never intervened when much older men plied them with drinks and worse, and got much, much too close. Massively negligent, and if they had taken their licensing agreements and health and safety responsibilities seriously, so many grim incidents could have been avoided.

BonnieF · 03/11/2018 00:43

The Pink Coconut (yes, really...) in Derby, circa 1989.

This ghastly place was the ultimate ‘Kev & Sharon’ meat-market nightclub. The management considered their establishment to be upmarket, so a rigid dress code was enforced. No jeans, trainers, t-shirts etc etc. This meant the lads all wore suits & ties from Burton, and looked like they were off to work in the local branch of Barclays. The girls would wear as little as possible and would literally dance round their handbags to naff chart music - mostly Kylie & Jason.

It was grim.

Chickenwings85 · 03/11/2018 00:46

Cherrypavlova - the royal in ramsgate before it's make over had the lovely sticky carpets. Bloody loved it there but it really was a dive back then.

HowOftenDoYouClean · 03/11/2018 00:47

Amadeus in medway. Was so shit and i would say a good 75% of all the "women" were underage girls and everyone knew. The police may as well have arrested the guys walking into the club and saved everyone the trouble.

HarrietSchulenberg · 03/11/2018 00:48

Ritzy in Leeds, late 80s was THE grimmest club. Essentially a glitterballed barn above a cheap shopping centre, full of perms, stillettos and gold clanky earrings. So bad it regularly hosted the Hitman and Her.
Mind you, the basement of the same shopping centre was home to the glorious Phono. With a carpet so sticky you actually brought bits of it home on your arse if you sat on it, dry ice as thick as the fag smoke, the world's smallest dancefloor and the best music.
Ziggys sounds like I'd've probably loved it.

HarrietSchulenberg · 03/11/2018 00:51

The Redback! If you knew that then you might be acquainted with the Shebeen, the lock-in, after hours "club" behind the George and Dragon on Acton High St, late '90s. Now that was really shit but in an almost good way.

claracluck78 · 03/11/2018 00:59

Also just remembered Planet Earth in Leeds with its revolving dance floor!!!

thisonebreath · 03/11/2018 01:01

Ha, was also coming to say the Hippodrome. Went (once!) in 1997 - we stayed long enough to gulp down our drinks. An absolute meat-market.

TinselAngel · 03/11/2018 01:04

The Razz (AKA blue Angel Liverpool) was dreadful, but I'll not hear a word said against it! It was reliably open every weeknight when you just went out for last orders then decided you didn't want to go home.

In my memory it played "Brown Eyed Girl" on a loop.

Is it still going?

zenasfuck · 03/11/2018 01:08

@ColinsVeryJolly where was that ? I was around wolves at that time but can't remember a place Called first base

MarthasGinYard · 03/11/2018 01:09

BonnieF

The Pink Coconut

Blimey it was dreadful

It had that little room in call the 'peppermint lounge'

ClenchQueen · 03/11/2018 01:10

The Redback ... fly to the other side of the world to vomit on a pavement in Acton ...

Hairytangerine · 03/11/2018 01:12

Zen in Livingston, my biggest issue was no takeaway outside. Proper rough. I seen the last time they do have takeaways 20 years later!

Tokyo jo’s In Preston- really rough. Squires was much more my style!

42’s in Manchester - dog rough
