The worst nightclub you've ever been to?

Ziggys, York c.1999. An old Regency townhouse that you would swear was still lived in. Sofas, scatter cushions, and chintz wallpaper on the walls - chintz wallpaper that actually started sweating by 10pm. The main dance floor was down in the basement with only one narrow staircase for access and which must have breached every single health and safety law known to man.

We only kept going because it was two WKD's for £1.50 on student night.

What are you talking about? I loved ziggys 1999! So homely

Grin

Sure, if you want to curl up on the sofa during a night out...

When I saw the title of this, before I read your post, the first thing that popped into my head was Ziggys!

I love the sound of ziggy’s!

Elzbells · 02/11/2018 22:47

Batchwood, hours of clubbing then into the conservatory for tea.

Xuli · 02/11/2018 22:49

Glad someone else has experienced the joy of Ziggys Grin

I'd quite like a cuppa during a night out...

I can't remember the name of the place blocked it out but I was on a works night out with a group of my DH's colleagues and they mentioned somewhere I'd never been in. One of the group (who suddenly needed to go home ...) demonstrated the style of dancing at this club by doing the pointy finger dance from Saturday Night Fever. I thought they were joking but when we went in, there was only one couple dancing on the floor doing a jive.

We didn't stay long.

Wedgies. Bristol. Late 90s.

Kernowgal · 02/11/2018 22:56

Hungry Duck, Moscow.

Terrifying, so much so that it featured on Eurotrash a few years after I went.

helacells · 02/11/2018 22:56

The Contie in Liverpool next door to Cream. Regularly saw people being glassed, vomiting, random fights, disgusting overflowing loos and a general feeling of depression hung in the air as you realized life was never going to get better. So glad I left

Kernowgal · 02/11/2018 22:57

And the correct link...

Mirage, Windsor, early '90's.It's been through numerous name changes since then. Very sweaty, lots of drugs, over zealous bouncers. At one point they even turned off the cold water taps in the loos, (so hot water only), to prevent people drinking from them - you had to buy their overpriced bottled water instead. You had to be on drugs to enjoy yourself there, otherwise it was just a dirty, overpriced meat market.

Bananalanacake · 02/11/2018 23:00

The Cactus Pit in blackheath. I loved The wooden toilet doors and the floating head playing the saxophone. So bad it was good.

DuggeesWooOOooggle · 02/11/2018 23:00

When I saw this thread title I immediately thought 'Ziggy's, York'. I see I am not alone! In fact it seems we were probably all there at the same time. I only went a couple of times, late 90s also. I distinctly remember sitting at one of the booths and a woodlouse falling from the ceiling into the table.

Alternatively, Toffs over 25s night (if you could sneak in as a 17 year old) was a wonderland of perms, clanking gold earrings and cheap shiny clothes.

So much class in one small city Grin

PippaRabbit · 02/11/2018 23:00

The Maniqui in Falkirk in 1984 - my feet stuck to the carpet! Also the Martell the night after. I lasted 10 minutes 😳

QueenOfTheAndals · 02/11/2018 23:03

The Acton Redback in West London. Now a posh circus-themed pub.

Also had a memorable night at Reflex the 80s bar on Wynd St in Swansea many moons ago...

BuggeringNora · 02/11/2018 23:04

Also Watertown Croydon - every hideous naff nightclub cliché in one location. Rough as a badgers arse too - numerous fights.

alienor13 · 02/11/2018 23:04

I second the Conti in Liverpool. Only went once. Dire. As was Cream in my opinion. The State was the best club in the world ever though . Whoever decided to turn an old ballroom into a nightclub was genius.

Xuli · 02/11/2018 23:05

Toffs!! We tried to go there a few times but the older women were terrifying. Though I now realise they were younger than I am now!

You can’t begin to imagine awfulunless you went to some of the Margate/Ramsgate nightclubs in the 1980s. Watching peole be ‘bottled’ was not uncommon, nor was finding people who’d overdosed in the lavatories. Sticky floors, very dim lighting, a fug of cigarette smoke and Duran Duran. Not nice, on reflection.

Thebluedog · 02/11/2018 23:07

Marilyn’s in Evesham. Sticky carpets, the lot. Grin

MissMarplesKnitting · 02/11/2018 23:09

Cream was a dive. Toilets always blocked. Always. Grim.

Blue Angel aka "the razz" was a sticky floored haven of cheap double measures and cheesy tracks.

As a local, Blackpool had some proper dodgy nights out. Jelly's was somewhere you ever went once....

The Hippodrome in Leicester Square, London. Admittedly I've never actually been inside, but in the 90s, if you even so much as walked past the place, you'd be harassed by the slimiest, most disgusting men imaginable. If it was that bad just walking past the place in the street, goodness knows what it must've actually been like inside. I hope some of you are going to tell me. Grin
