The worst nightclub you've ever been to?

Ziggys, York c.1999. An old Regency townhouse that you would swear was still lived in. Sofas, scatter cushions, and chintz wallpaper on the walls - chintz wallpaper that actually started sweating by 10pm. The main dance floor was down in the basement with only one narrow staircase for access and which must have breached every single health and safety law known to man.

We only kept going because it was two WKD's for £1.50 on student night.

A while ago Chameleon Woking had a VIP offer, my life’s aspiration

Glitteryfrog · 04/11/2018 19:49

@itssquidstella

Ah Thursday nights at the lounge. I remember many a happy night there and many a can of coke and crisps during 6th form Friday mornings.

itssquidstella · 04/11/2018 19:51

@Glitteryfrog I wonder if we know each other?! I was at NSB 2001-3...

Good to see Jesters in Southampton taking its place on this list. I'm so old I remember it opening Shock and it was like that from the start. Mind you, I can't hear 'Groove is in the Heart' without thinking of good nights in there. You never leant against the walls though, as they were wet from leaks in the loos upstairs....

And also yes to the Park/Shark End in Oxford. Terrible place. All those creepy blokes standing round the dance floor and watching the women. Ugh.

DH was at York Uni and thinks it hilarious how many mentions there are of Ziggys.

Pinkywoo · 04/11/2018 21:04

Fat Pauly's in Norwich, a punk club underneath a multi storey car park where the average age was 15, and there was a big room at the back full of sofas that smelt of vomit and mould. Even now the smell of damp reminds me of Pauly's, and I also found out that blind drunk is not just a saying!

shellyandlayla · 04/11/2018 21:09

Pericombobulations We clearly moved in similar circles - I remember all of those! And if your friend owned Tumblers he would have employed one of my (still) best friends as the DJ in th early 90's. And wasn't Champagne's owned by the same guy who set fire to the Royal Standard pub on Manningham Lane so he could claim on his own insurance. I had my last night in Bfd at the Underworld on NYE before going off to NZ... such memories!

chicken2015 · 04/11/2018 21:14

Is someone talking about the lounge on thursday nights in northampton?! Omg o loved it there!!

Aaarrrggghh · 04/11/2018 21:14

@ihopeyouwitchesareready
@Justgotobed

We must be from the same neck of the woods. Charlie's & Motherwell Point - only the once each.

Hamilton Palace was the staple of my weekend. Underage. Burnt out by 21 😂

StoneRoses4Ever · 04/11/2018 21:17

MesM - was that Utopia in Reading (outskirts)? I never heard that someone shat on the dance floor!!!!

A few familiar ones to me on this thread - RG1s in Reading and Blue Orchid in Croydon amongst others!

CigarsofthePharoahs · 04/11/2018 21:27

I remember the "Ro y" in Sheffield! I left that great city in 2000 and I heard it had been bought by a church. I do wonder how that went...
I had a friend who was obsessed with Utopia in Reading. It was ok as clubs go - all the loos still had their doors on and I think they cleaned occasionally - but it had a steep stair case on the way in and I wonder how many drunk people fell down on their way out. It's been bulldozed now, there's an Ikea there now.

Flyaway78 · 04/11/2018 21:43

Faces in Leicester... early 90’s.
I remember seeing a guy pee into a pint glass.. it was that kinda place!

Flyaway78 · 04/11/2018 21:45

Oh and I spent many a night in Ziggy’s too - so funny how many shout-outs to that place!

Pericombobulations · 04/11/2018 21:53

@shellyandlayla very probably - he was very dodgy owner so I heard.

i was one of DJ'es at the Underworld on a Monday (after '97ish) if you ever came down on our night? Did your mate ever cross over to DJ there too as I may know them.

Dotte · 04/11/2018 22:35

I remember the stairs in utopia! I have been to the ikea, I had no idea that’s where Utopia was. We used to buy a bus ticket from the pub that would get us there and back.

As for truly awful clubs, does anyone remember the club (if it could be called that) on Bognor Regis pier? It had a revolving dance floor, I visited a friend and for some reason we ended up in Bognor. Not one of my best nights.

Yes to remembering Aldershot before the paras moved out. What an experience.

DishranawaywiththeSpoon · 04/11/2018 23:02

Anyone ever been to Vivid in herne bay?
That is truly dire. Sticky carpets, no locks on toilet doors, very cheap drinks. It's like a pub disco room not a club.

Average age of the girls is I would say 15 and them men probably about 50 (with a few 13 year olds mixed in). We went because they never IDed us. There were always fights, lots and lots of pathetic punch ups with teenage girls standing in the middle shouting.

I think all clubs in Kent have sticky floors and non locking toilet doors, I didn't realise you could actually go to the toilet in clubs till I went to uni Grin

Dontfeellikeaskeleton · 05/11/2018 01:26

Lots of Liverpool uni students on here I see Grin

Smackwaterjack's anyone?

emmcan · 05/11/2018 02:26

Xuli and claracluck78 how come nobody is mentioning the legendary The Willow..?

CaribooSasquatch · 05/11/2018 03:13

@Pericombobulations - I was there throughout the 90's. Was definately an Underworld girl, visiting Rios for the magificent Friday Goth night in the side room!

I think that was probably after my time? (91-94.) Don't think there was a Friday Goth night back then? Then again my Fridays were usually spent working the FNDs (as TSA). Wednesday was our regular Rios night, but we did often go more than once a week.

Pickwicks was a meat market feel kind of place, you may have seen my DH there in the Rugby Squad

Haha! Probably, if he was there when I was? I was on Elec Eng (one of very few females - I think it was 5 of us out of >130) so most of my friends were guys. More were nerds than were rugby lads though.

"meat market" Oh yeah, LOL! Snogged my DH for the first time in Pickwicks in '92. Grin Our "first date" the next day was a pint or 9 at the Westleigh...

shellyandlayla · 05/11/2018 06:23

@Pericombobulations ahh, sadly your years behind the decks were just after my time - my last night at the Underworld was NYE 1996 Goth night there was Wednesday during my time as far as I remember (wondering if I dare look out some pictures now!) I think my friend did work at the Underworld occasioanlly too - if I said Fowad?
@CaribooSasquatch I remember the FND too! Though we were not regulars exactly. And we always had to sit on the floor!

Also the Frog and Toad, the Rawson Bar, and even before that the Spotted House (though I was about 14 back then!) and about a hundred pubs!

itssquidstella · 05/11/2018 06:59

@chicken2015 yep I was a regular at the Lounge!

Auldspinster · 05/11/2018 07:15

I can remember going to the Rooftops after seeing Sonic Youth in 1992, the mirrored walls were a little off putting.

The nearby Victorias had a reputation as bad as Clatty Pattys. I was a student nurse and one of our numbed mentioned that to the DJ and we were inundated with creepy guys who clearly thought we were up for it.

chicken2015 · 05/11/2018 07:34

My friends went from 16 but as i couldnt ever get in , i did look very young i had to wait till i was 18 so could show id , i used to love it in there, ive moved away from northampton, have such fond memories!

TheSheepofWallSt · 05/11/2018 07:41

I was just talking about Ziggys the other day - how the sweat ran down the walls...

gothefcktosleep · 05/11/2018 07:43

The Rat and Parrot somewhere near Dartford early 2000s. People smashing alcopop bottles on the dance floor as a laugh.

Horrific. Could not wait to get out of there.

Buteo · 05/11/2018 08:07

Halleys in Bideford, late 80s, was in a converted cinema so the main area (old stalls) sloped steeply down to a tiny dance floor and the bar at the back was about shoulder height. Decorated with a round cattle feeder as a feature in the middle. Great cocktail bar in the dress circle though, and always a mass scrum at Cheffles chip van on the river front afterwards.

Klute in Durham in the early 90s was a death trap - steep rickety stairs with nails sticking out of the handrails. Someone got thrown out down the stairs by the bouncers and died?
