The worst nightclub you've ever been to?

Ziggys, York c.1999. An old Regency townhouse that you would swear was still lived in. Sofas, scatter cushions, and chintz wallpaper on the walls - chintz wallpaper that actually started sweating by 10pm. The main dance floor was down in the basement with only one narrow staircase for access and which must have breached every single health and safety law known to man.

We only kept going because it was two WKD's for £1.50 on student night.

NKSW yes, Winkers, Chalfont St Peter! Dire!

BaileysOnToast · 04/11/2018 05:26

Ha ha ha @TinselAngel strangely I actually went prepared that night and wore a dress over the linens (I know how random that sounds and I can't even say it looked good cos I can't remember) so the trousers were whipped off and the night continued!

Only club you could bang your jacket for 10p and buy cheap cigs!

I think the krazy house was just called K when I moved to Liverpool, could be wrong! My guilty pleasure was pop world!!

Bluelonerose · 04/11/2018 07:49

@worsethings

Is it really Grin really not my type of music but I know a couple of friends who would love a night out there. Can you ask him if the bars still charge different prices for drinks? Grin
Youde pay £1.50 for double vodka and coke at one bar but the other youde pay £6 Confused always baffled me.

@wombatron same, left 11 years ago now, kept in touch with a lot if the old gang.
Not sure you're on Facebook, but there's a group of us subs/oast kids called Medway Miserables.

glamorousgrandmother · 04/11/2018 08:22

The Bali Hai in Streatham in the late 70s. The dance floor overlooked an ice rink and the ladies' toilets were full of men dealing drugs. I was never really a night club person.

Childrenofthesun · 04/11/2018 08:27

Snobs in Birmingham Shock No! This was the best nightclub in Birmingham!

Dome II on the other hand. Its Vodka/Red bull nights were the worst.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 04/11/2018 08:32

I was at uni in Liverpool in the mid 90's. I had a group of friends that loved the Cavern and another group who thought it uncool and would rather go to Cream/Nation. I seem to remember Cavern just smelling of sweat really! We loved Garlands (gay nightclub) and Baa Baas, anyone remember those? They might still be there, haven't googled. Going back for a reunion next summer so sure we will check them out Grin

KenDoddsDadsDog · 04/11/2018 08:33

Loved Baa Bar ! And the Cavern was minging but a right laugh - remember being there at end of 2nd year exams and it rained through the ceiling . Not just the usual sweat.

Bowchicawowow · 04/11/2018 08:39

Yes user The owner of Pemps in Wigan was a woman called Barbara who used to walk up and down the queue carrying a whip. She would decide if she knew you or not and if she did you got in.

JockTamsonsBairns · 04/11/2018 08:49

Christ, I can't believe I'd forgotten all about Clatty Pat's Shock. Spent many's a night hugging the toilet bowl in there, it's a wonder I'm still alive!
Loved the Swavvy Savvy, used to regularly go round there on my own after finishing my shift at a pub down the road. Even got a late lumber in the taxi queue once or twice Grin
Anyone from that area remember Rooftops? That was grim. Only beaten in the grim stakes by Sunset Boulevard (The Bully) in Clydebank. Used to get in free, drinks 30p a shot, and lived near enough that I could walk it home with my shoes in my handbag. Cheap night out Grin

wombatron · 04/11/2018 09:22

Cheers @BoooForYou - I may go and take a look!

Fresta · 04/11/2018 09:35

The Frontier in Batley was the 1980/90s club to be at!!! The laser show was legendary, and no other club had Black Lace and Bucks Fizz as it's regular performers- the music never started until about midnight as the bands had to perform first. It was huge and with twin bars on either side you could sashay from one to the other checking out the boys and deciding who'd you'd snog later when the slow dance started- erection section indeed!!!

Ritzy's in Leeds was the height of cheese as well!

As a student I remember going to Valentinos on a Monday night- we used to get bussed there and would drink a bottle of Thunderbird on the way!

Zoflorabore · 04/11/2018 09:50

All above still in Liverpool except for Cream TakeMeDown

SellFridges · 04/11/2018 09:58

Snobs rules. End of.

I spent my 18th and A Level results night (and many other nights before that) in some school hall pretending to be a nightclub called The Brad in Chesterfield. I think they’ve built houses on it now. I think it was more expensive to put your coat in the cloak room than it was to buy a drink.

Cofogirl · 04/11/2018 10:22

@ClenchQueen - you’ll be delighted to know that Roadhouse is still there and hasn’t changed. I ended up there last week after having not been there for a good 15 years or so. Same shite bands playing the same shite music. Amazing.

There was also Hombres just off Oxford street.
And who remembers Eros in Enfield and Destiny in Watford???

Silvernutmeg70 · 04/11/2018 10:32

Planet X in Liverpool - dingy basement with dripping, mouldy walls. There was a fire in it once and it still opened again with about 6 inches of water swilling around the entire floor area - absolutely fabulous bands and music though, I loved it!
The Pink Parrot in Liverpool - similar to above but upstairs.
Spiders in Hull - dingy but fantastic - wiggly worms!
Bongo in Middlesbrough - just one look at the outside of it ensured I never went in there ever!
For people in the northeast - Philmore's in Saltburn - sleazy meat market.

IcanBe · 04/11/2018 10:41

Dr Jim's in Croydon late 70s anyone? Rough as anything but I did meet my first real boyfriend there so have fond memories! Had occasion to pass by there recently and it's now a Polish delicatessen. Slightly less rough was Boobs above the pub just a few doors down ... loved it there though the heating was always on full blast I'm sure and the "Cola" was just short of water. Happy days.

JoyceDivision · 04/11/2018 10:58

@fresta

We live near the Frontiwr! Now a gym, but oh thegiddy days of the light show and the last chance saloon slow dance closing the night down when it turned into a proper meat market Grin

About 3 years ago when it is was on its last legs we got refused entry for being too drunk Shock

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 04/11/2018 11:16

Charlie Chan’s Walthamstow

You had to dress up to get in have no idea why

Had one or two good nights in Tots Southend Blush

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour · 04/11/2018 11:48

@Glitteryfrog It was Legends! Where I my my DH Grin

catinboots9 · 04/11/2018 12:06

Keep remembering more dodgy ones.

Jumping Jacks in Maidstone anyone?

Oldraver · 04/11/2018 13:13

Mass and The Fridge in Brixton Noooo I loved these clubs

Thesearmsofmine · 04/11/2018 13:15

I also live near The Frontier, I only went once not too long before it closed down.

itssquidstella · 04/11/2018 13:31

@LockedOutOfMN Shark End was a staple when I was a student!

The Northampton club may well have been the Lounge (or Scrounge, as it was universally known). It had a similar vibe to Ziggy's, judging from this thread.

Sofas on the ground floor, cheese on the middle floor and what it took me an embarrassingly long time to work out were pill heads in the attic. Everyone underage apart from the creepy middle aged Albanian men.

Half the sixth form used to go to the indie night on Thursdays and turn up hungover to school on Fridays (I had triple Politics!).

Scummy club but fantastic memories. It closed down when the bouncers chucked someone down the fire escape and they died 😱

catgirl1976 · 04/11/2018 13:35

You can't slag off Ziggys Shock blasphemy.
