I have name changed because I might show DD this thread.

DD is 10. Since she was a baby she has had a much loved teddy. Currently she sleeps with it and will cuddle it if she is upset. It stays in her bedroom.

Recently she has become convinced that she should not have teddy any more. She thinks others would say it is babyish to still have a teddy.

What do you think? Is it OK for a 10 year old to have a teddy at night? What age should she give it up?

Mum is 70 and still has her threadbear in her bedroom. My aunt knits him jumpers for Christmas.
People who keep bears forever are usually lovely. Smile

DGS now 10 has a revolting smelly furry monkey he takes to bed. All his friends have a cuddly. They're all macho football and rugby playing boys and they all take their cuddlies to cub camp. No-one makes fun of it.

Docsornot · 03/10/2018 23:25

DS is 11 and has his teddy. He doesn’t take it to a sleepover but loves having it on his bed.

2 of them come on every holiday with me.
I take photos of them everywhere. At the airport. On the plan. In the hotel. In restaurants...

I have no issues :)
I dont care what people say

My DD age 10 has a beloved teddy that she takes to school every day but puts in a secret pocket in her backpack. She just feels better knowing he's there. She's a very confident popular girl, not sure if that's relevant. She says the girls totally understand why she has her teddy with her but thinks the boys might find it strange. Doesn't bother her, she takes him everywhere, and I can't imagine it ever being any other way!

PandaG · 03/10/2018 23:30

DS is 18. Bunny just went to university with him, complete with newly knitted matching scarves for DS and cuddly!

SageYourResoluteOracle · 03/10/2018 23:30

I have a bunny rabbit that was once pink but is now beige. He's called Bungee. He's 40 now, as am I. 🐰

confusedmomm · 03/10/2018 23:43

32 and still have my teddy called BuBu

AllTheProsecco · 03/10/2018 23:50

I only stopped sleeping with mine when DH and I moved in together as he thought she was creepy.

She's on DD's shelf now with all the other teddy's and DD loves her too. Much to DH's dismay.

LewisFan · 03/10/2018 23:59

My sister is married and her Teddy sleeps in their bed. He's also gone on all their holidays with them.

shutupandgotosleep · 04/10/2018 00:05

My kids go to a 3-18 school. They have a matron who is lovely but very much a no nonsense lady. Think old style matron type of lady.

I had to go and pick one of the dc up from the medical room the other day. And they were tucked in bed with a cuddly. Apparently the cuddly is in great demand, most of the senior school knows that he is there for a cuddle if they need one but it's the big tough rugby playing lads who seem particularly fond of him.

SukiPutTheEarlGreyOn · 04/10/2018 00:09

A teddy is a friend for life and there’s really no age limit. My 6 foot ds is almost out of his teens and his ted still sits amongst the guitars and teenage stuff in his room. Tell your dd it’s totally fine to continue to enjoy ted as long as she wants to.

LikeLemondrops · 04/10/2018 00:20

Dh is in the army and has a bear he takes on every deployment. The dc bought him it so he wouldn't feel too lonely.

NarcolepticOuchMouse · 04/10/2018 01:12

I took mine to uni with me when I was 18. I still have her now years later. I don't think you ever out grow your teddy

holypoo · 04/10/2018 02:53

I don't have a small teddy which I had from a child. But is it a phase thing? Like from 0-8 it's acceptable then from 8-21 it's not acceptable then from 21+ it's endearing and therefore acceptable? (Ages as an example)

My DH bought me a teddy which now goes everywhere with me and my housemate had a teddy which sat on his bed wherever he lived.

OneTitWonder · 04/10/2018 03:11

My DS is 10, nearly 11 and still sleeps with his teddy every night.

AndTheyCallitPuppyLove · 04/10/2018 03:14

My son is 12 and has a giant pug and a giant teddy in his bed
:)

OverTheHedgeSammy · 04/10/2018 06:44

My DS1 is 11, and there are times I can barely see him in his bed because of the number of teddy's and cuddly blankets in his bed!

If she doesn't want the bear in her bed when friends come over, she could pop it into your room then get him later.

WaltzingIntoTheTide · 04/10/2018 06:53

My dd is 15yrs and she still sleeps with her teddy and he goes away with her on holiday etc! Keep your teddy OP’s daughter Bear Smile

Ilovewillow · 04/10/2018 07:04

Whatever age it suits her! My daughter and her school are off on a residential in a week and in yr 6 so same age and a teddy is on the kit list!!

GetOnYerBike · 04/10/2018 07:14

The most adorable thing I witnessed when Ds2 started secondary last year was him and his new made friends on skype showing each other their teddies.

He is now 12 and still sleeps on his bear like a pillow. He has another 20 or so cuddly toys that rotate a turn alongside the bear. Yesterday he came home from school to find the owl in the bed. He asked what he was doing there, I told him he must have flown in to speak to bear. My son was very happy that I join in. I actually speak to his bear when I go into his room and there is no-one else in the house.

I have never told him it is babyish because it isn't. He finds great comfort in the bear.

Voldesnort · 04/10/2018 08:52

My DD is 10 and had a teddy. In fact several on rotation, but 1 favorite who always get cuddled to sleep. Her friends are the same. (Though they won't all admit it to their friends!) I'm late 30s and still have mine too! Smile

Cedar03 · 04/10/2018 09:01

DD is 11 and has several cuddly toys in her bed. A couple went with her to her Year 6 residential and lots of other children had their toys too.

HellenaHandbasket · 04/10/2018 09:02

I still cuddled mine up until I shared a bed with someone. I still have him, and my kids take care of him. I'm nearly 38.

mamahanji · 04/10/2018 09:18

I slept with the same teddy until I was 20 and then gave it to my daughter. I still sneak him for cuddles now!
