Please can you help my DD?

I have name changed because I might show DD this thread.

DD is 10. Since she was a baby she has had a much loved teddy. Currently she sleeps with it and will cuddle it if she is upset. It stays in her bedroom.

Recently she has become convinced that she should not have teddy any more. She thinks others would say it is babyish to still have a teddy.

What do you think? Is it OK for a 10 year old to have a teddy at night? What age should she give it up?

I'm 35 and still have my teddy. Use a different one for holidays, just in case he has an accident. I've also still got my blanket. It had shredded itself into oblivion, so I tried retiring it. Lasted two months before I had to do some extensive reattaching of the pieces as I was reaching for it in the night and it wasn't there.

NoNoCharlieRascal · 03/10/2018 22:16

I still have mine at 30 and a feather pillow from my first bed, they have now been stolen given to ds who won't sleep without either.

He’s 41, blind in one eye and still rocking his 70s jewellery, but he’ll always be my number one guy.

Please can you help my DD?

I went to boarding school between the ages of 16 and 18 and lived at university between ages 18 and 21. I knew lots of people with teddies or special comfort items like pillow and blankets. There were quite a few people who needed a night light to sleep too.

NorksAreMessy · 03/10/2018 22:28

DD is a barrister.....anything else I say would be COMPLETELY identifying...but it is well loved, very worn and is the first thing out of every suitcase

EthelHornsby · 03/10/2018 22:32

My sister is 60 - she still has her bald and much mended teddy

plominoagain · 03/10/2018 22:36

My 14 year old DD has her Labbits safely tucked away every night with her . I bought three as a safeguard when she was born with the aim of her having just the one and two emergency replacements if lost or damaged . That lasted about two weeks , and now she lines them up on her pillows .

I have no doubt at all they’ll be going to uni !

InTheNavy · 03/10/2018 22:41

My DSs 11 & 16 both have teddies and several other soft toys in bed every night, including a rather giant panda. DS2 even has his cot blanket
If she really doesn't want them, store them carefully in the loft for the future.

PetraDelphiki · 03/10/2018 22:43

Dd (11) has a strict Rota for the tots that she cuddles, plus a full bed full of other ones!!

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 03/10/2018 22:43

i still have my care bear which i was bought by my nanan when i was a baby. He's currently in storage due to a house move and not being able to take everything at once but i'll never get rid of him!

PetraDelphiki · 03/10/2018 22:43

Toys not tots

LottaHogs · 03/10/2018 22:46

I’m 49 and still have Little Ted. He was handed down from my dad, and he’s now too fragile and threadbare to sleep in bed with me. He sits on the drawers next to my bed instead.
He’s one of the few items I’d grab in an emergency situation.

Talith · 03/10/2018 22:48

I've two teddies who are 43 years old. If my boys sneak in my bed for a cuddle I'll throw one of them in their direction. They're very experienced in helping children sleep. Keep your teddy!

OnGoldenPond · 03/10/2018 22:49

My hulking great 16 yr old DS still has his toy rabbit in bed with him. Doesn't seem to have done him any harm.

I would definitely still have my teddy if my "D"B hadn't flushed it down the toilet when I was 8 Sad >

CrazyKittenSmile · 03/10/2018 22:49

I’m 31. I still sleep with my teddy (actually a rabbit) and if I’m staying away from home he always joins me too.

cryptonaut · 03/10/2018 22:51

I had my teddy until about 23, took her on holiday with me as a teenager, took her to uni with me, moved into my first flat with her. Cuddled her every night. The only reason I gave her up is because dad and step mum had a baby and I wanted to give them my teddy as she had been so good to me for so long, otherwise I'm pretty sure DH and I would be sharing the bed with her today.

Thighofrelief · 03/10/2018 22:55

I still have my blankie from when I was a baby. I'm very old and he is very fragile now so only comes out of his special hand stitched home when the need is acute. Seen me through 2 divorces has Old Blankie.

Thighofrelief · 03/10/2018 22:56

Which incidentally is not his real name, we keep that secret 🔐

Mummy2one2016 · 03/10/2018 22:56

Not long turned 28, married with a toddler and I still sleep with my thumper rabbit. He has gone everywhere with me since I was very little. I can't sleep without him.

abitoflight · 03/10/2018 23:01

DD 15 has revolting monkey she has slept with for 8 years.
I have to wash him secretly 😄

Samantha2018 · 03/10/2018 23:06

My 13yo has a collection! She's not too old it can just sit on the bed.

Loopylou6 · 03/10/2018 23:08

I often go into my dd room and see his hairy legs sticking out and his arm round his Ted that he's had since he was 9 months, he's now 19 Grin

Loopylou6 · 03/10/2018 23:09

Ds* although 14 year old dd also has her special Ted ...

Bodear · 03/10/2018 23:15

@Cornflakedout hope you’re ok and not too lonely. I don’t have my childhood teddy either and it makes me sad. I have 3 lovely news ones that I do cuddle when I need to but I wish I still had Ellie x

eddiemairswife · 03/10/2018 23:16

I am 80.I still have Big Ted. I don't take him to bed; he lives in the spare room, but I could never throw him away. He has been to Singapore and back by ship. He has no eyes and the stuffing has come out of his arms.
