Another for aldi Moser Roth here. I get the Peruvian which is 60 something % cocoa solids & I find about right. 5 small bars in each pack & I try to just have one.....

PickAChew · 18/08/2018 23:34

I was quite gobsmacked after despairing of cheap newsagent style chocolate for so long, when I picked up a kitkat and the chocolate was actually glossy with a snap to it and quite palatable. Such a contrast to the bubbly brown powdery stuff in the tin of quality street that DH was given for Christmas.

Have ordered £20 of chocolate from love cocoa. Mostly 37% milk chocolate but a honeycomb bar, salted caramel and a coffee one as well. Up for live taste testing next week. Really hope it tastes like old fashioned Cadbury's.

Movablefeast · 19/08/2018 00:31

I live in the USA and because all American and UK chocolate is now crap I buy the German brands such as Milka which is still delicious.

99Probllamas · 19/08/2018 00:41

I too have just ordered over £20 worth of chocolate from Love Cocoa, with a 10% off code from the spinny thing Smile really hoping I like it, I'm finding 'normal' chocolate just makes me feel unwell these days

Ollivander84 · 19/08/2018 00:43

This stuff is nice

Fantastic chocolate for the price is Sainsbury's No Added Sugar, Dark and Milk, 85p for a 100g bar, delicious - although too much would give laxative effects due to matilol/lacitol sweetener. So chocolatey though! Please buy it if you like it to avoid them discontinuing!
Ingredients for the dark one are, in order:

Cocoa mass
Maltitol sweetener
Lacitol sweetener
Cocoa butter
Fat reduced cocoa powder
Emulsifier
Sunflower
Lecithin
Vanilla flavouring

I've biught feom Love Cocoa. I really want Mr Cadbury to do well and it seems like he knows that what's happened to British chocolate is a travesty.
10% off. I bought caramel truffles, white chocolate rose bar, earl grey milk chocolate and a simple plain milk chocolate bar.
I can't wait. I rarely ever eat chocolate nowadays and on the occasion that I do, i always feel cheated.

Oh and I nominate Equal Exchange Chocolate. It's in my local organic health food shop so I don't think it's a well known company. Its really creamy and feels lovely in the mouth.

I'm sorry about the spelling mistakes.

PerverseConverse · 19/08/2018 02:36

I've just woken up thinking about that jar of buttons from
John Lewis and realised how waited my logic was as just paid £20 for 8 bars of chocolate but was objecting to paying £20 for a huge jar of buttons Grin I think it's because I'm used to paying £1 for a big bag of Cadbury ones and £4 for a bag of the Montezuma ones seemed extortionate. However, isn't chocolate supposed to be a a treat rather than something we inhale at the speed of light ?? In that case I don't mind paying as you get more for your money I think (I can't do maths in the middle of the night). I'm wanting quality over quantity and would get these fur Christmas.

What the fuck have they done to chocolate?
PerverseConverse · 19/08/2018 02:40

Warped not waited

PerverseConverse · 19/08/2018 02:45

They work out at £2.55 per100g which isn't too bad actually.
I'm way too invested in this thread considering I don't even eat chocolate anymore 😂 I like to think I will if I can find some good stuff though. And I'm over invested due to outrage that our once great British chocolate has been bastardised by Mondalez and Kraft.

SergeantPfeffer · 19/08/2018 08:00

Milka is now owned by Mondalez international, same as Cadbury’s. That’s why you can now get it dirt cheap in the supermarket when it used to be expensive and hard to find.

jigsawpiece · 19/08/2018 09:01

Beechs are good. They are an old British firm and nearly went bust a few years ago but managed to do a last minute deal with M&S to do a couple of chocs in their own brand box. Their pineapple creams are heavenly.

jigsawpiece · 19/08/2018 09:05

If anyone is near or passing Gloucester Services they sell Love Cocoa there

jigsawpiece · 19/08/2018 09:07

Oh and another vote for Co-ops own. The Himalayan sea salt or whatever it's called is lovely! However they don't do the small bars in my branch anymore only the big ones.

BackinTimeforTea · 19/08/2018 09:07

On the whole though, it’s better to encourage our kids to eat smaller amounts of nicer stuff than lots of the nasty cheap stuff. Hard sell to a 5 year old though!

TheSassyAssassin · 19/08/2018 09:09

OMG, do they jigsaw? I do stop there sometimes and treat self to some of their nice food but hadn't spotted that...although hadn't heard of Love Cocoa tbf before this thread, but now I know next time am there... Smile

LaurieFairyCake · 19/08/2018 09:11

Because of this thread I didn’t only buy from Love Cocoa, I also had a chocolate craving and popped into WHSmith at Waterloo station - the only decent choc, without nasties/palm oil was a Godiva bar at £2.39.

It was milk chocolate - it didn’t say the percentage on the back weirdly but it was ok, actually it was nice.

I’m a big fan of eating much less chocolate and buying better and I thought it was perfectly reasonable to share it with Dh and I felt satisfied. The ‘better’ for me before was too nice chocolate and I only ate it really occasionally (every few months) - really I want a bog standard bar I can eat weekly - very happy to pay up to £3-4 on it.

PerverseConverse · 19/08/2018 09:44

I've just had the quality over quantity conversation with my 9 and 11 year old who agree that chocolate isn't as nice as it used to be but don't want to eat less 🙄

PatchworkGirl · 19/08/2018 11:19

Those Montezuma buttons are amazing! Sooo much better thatn the Cadbury ones (which I used to love). I know they're expensive but if you check the weight they're about the same as other 'posh' chocolate. I also find 'nice' choc more satisfying in smaller pieces - so I'll happily pay more because I'll eat less iyswim.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 19/08/2018 11:34

Gloucester services you say...

Twotabbycats · 19/08/2018 11:41

It's already been mentioned but another vote for Nomnom here, especially the salted caramel... expensive but totally worth it!

Lindt is ok where I am, though I prefer darkish chocolate so can't speak for the milk.

Roxers · 19/08/2018 11:55

So what else is palm oil in these days apart from crappy chocolate?

I’m wondering if I began a “no palm oil” diet if it might be quite effective! Grin

Roxers · 19/08/2018 11:56

I have also made a purchase at Love Cocoa. I do think 480g chocolate for £20 is pretty extortionate, but I didn’t want to feel left out Wink
