@northdownsouth7

How to do 1920s style when you’re a pear shape? I’ve been invited to a party which is 1920s glamour….am looking at flapper dresses which look better on a straight up and down body shape I think.
I'd avoid the typical drop waist style and go for something more waisted. Also you could keep embellishment to the top half if you wanted to divert attention from hips

Have you got any suggestions for a dress to wear to a really posh venue with very posh people 😂 for a dinner and drinks?

I'm about 5 foot 7, size 14/16, hate my arms so must have a sleeve and a bit of a pot belly. I've got pale skin and dark hair.

Absolutely dreading the occasion tbh, not been properly 'out' in ages (apart from beers in the garden with neighbors) and lockdown has made me a bit socially anxious I think.

I'm thinking at least if I look the part I'll be halfway to feeling ok about the whole thing!

MorriseysGladioli · 28/06/2021 16:50

Oh, you're going out out!

iamsosobored · 28/06/2021 17:04

Hi, I'm 5ft and a pear shape with massive saddle bags. I've spent my whole life wearing long tops to go over my thighs to hide them and how big they are but it has recently been brought to my attention that I should do the opposite and wear tops that's that finish shorter/to my waist. Is this true? Will this make me look better/thinner?

cyclingmad · 28/06/2021 17:41

@naemates

Cyclingmad this is why we can't have nice things, you are not entitled to a response and the OP does not owe you anything
Lol okay someone starts a thread saying they will answer questions, then ignore questions...and I'm the entitled one Hmm so when I say why id my questikn being ignored instead of answering it the OP the says well I'm only answering easy ones.

Go ahead and report me! Lol

BonteGracieuse · 28/06/2021 17:45

I'm the entitled one

Well, you are the one insisting you are entitled to an answer!

Run along now and be entitled elsewhere...

cyclingmad · 28/06/2021 17:52

@BonteGracieuse

I'm the entitled one

Well, you are the one insisting you are entitled to an answer!

Run along now and be entitled elsewhere...

Then what is the point of starting a thread saying hey send in your questions and ill answer them, only to ignore them and the tell people they are rude for expecting a response.

Literally what is the point of asking a question if your going to be ignored. So yes if someone says hey send in your question the id expect an answer, so no im not entitled

CoralSparkles · 28/06/2021 18:08

Hi @frillseeking I am a UK 4 and 5’1”. I would really appreciate it if you could find me some smart trousers. My waist is very small (24”), which is several inches smaller than my hips. I am an hourglass figure. I always look like a school girl in smart trousers… and I rarely find trousers that actually fit me! I am in my 20s.

I would also love some new shorts for the summer! Thank you.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 28/06/2021 18:08

Well no, @cyclingmad most decent and normal people would think it would be nice to get an answer, maybe be disappointed if they didn't get one but not start ranting about it if they didn't.

You've been repeatedly nasty on this thread and come across incredibly entitled. Maybe you don't understand what the word means. If you did, it would be ridiculous for you to say you weren't being entitled!

OP doesn't work for you. She doesn't owe you something. Are you the kind of person who has a go at people for donating to charities of their own choosing if you think other charities are more deserving in your opinion?

Spoiler alert - the world doesn't revolve around you and being nice works both ways. You've been incredibly rude, snarky and nasty. Grow up.

Well no I dont start threads saying send in your questions and then miss answering one. Thin if your going to make a big statement saying hey send it your questions then you answer them and their is an expectation set you'll answer them.

If your boss at work says hey ask any questions you expect them to be answered not ignored.

I haven't been nasty, I've just said whats the point of saying send in questions ill answer them if your not going to live up to your promise. Then I've been called rude for even daring to point that out.

Don't start something if your not going to deliver

youvegottenminuteslynn · 28/06/2021 18:25

@cyclingmad

If your boss at work says hey ask any questions you expect them to be answered not ignored.

Eh? It's Mumsnet, not the workplace.

I dont start threads saying send in your questions and then miss answering one. Thin if your going to make a big statement saying hey send it your questions then you answer them and their is an expectation set you'll answer them.

And yet hundreds of people manage not to feel pissed off if they are missed or entitled to a response, or due an explanation for not getting one.

You're being utterly bizarre.

You don't seem to think you've said anything unreasonable yet you've had multiple posts deleted and multiple people say you've been totally out of order. Maybe worth considering you're in the wrong on this occasion rather than everyone else, no?

youvegottenminuteslynn · 28/06/2021 18:26

@cyclingmad

Don't start something if your not going to deliver

The actual entitlement of saying this about an AMA thread on Mumsnet - wow Grin

PegasusReturns · 28/06/2021 19:56

Next time I read an outrageous OP about an entitled CFer that seems incredible, I’m going to remind myself that people like @cyclingmad apparently walk amongst us.

cyclingmad · 28/06/2021 20:01

Lol who said I'm pissed off, I made a comment, doesn't automatically mean I'm pissed off.

I mean lets face it, if your not going to answer peoples questions that you asked them to send in, then your the cf, thats the term you all use isnt it.

I woukdnt go round saying hey ask me anything and then say ill answer you, you ignore you, ill answer you.

I'm mean op is in the customer service business and well what does that say about her service really. And she is the one who said herself she was just answering easy questions, so well guess my question was just too hard for a stylist to answer Hmm

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 28/06/2021 20:05

@cyclingmad I'm pretty sure the op would have difficulty recommending clothes for a grown adult to footstamp and temper tantrum in. Its a pretty niche request.

I would go for something loose fitting made from a light material so you don't get too hot Smile

youvegottenminuteslynn · 28/06/2021 20:07

Lol who said I'm pissed off, I made a comment, doesn't automatically mean I'm pissed off.

Oh no @cyclingmad, you don't seem pissed off at all... absolutely bizarre behaviour. I hope you're ok.

@knitpicker

Ooohhh I need help. I work in a museum, I am 50, speccy, really quite grey and a frump. I want to apply for the CEO role coming up but no idea how to dress the part. Ideally I would start dressing more like ‘a boss’ now … can you point me in the right direction? I am tall and used to be thin but hurt my back last year which impinged on my exercise- am now overweight, very typical middle aged spread
I wanted to have a think about this one. As you work in a museum, I would imagine that the environment is a little more creative than a typical office environment so I would move away from suits to a smart, tailored look. A smart, printed dress came to mind initially, especially as you are tall, I think would look very elegant and I have linked some other ideas

Quick question, how do you deal with clients that think they look shit in absolutely everything? I have zero body confidence right now after having a baby 2 months ago. I have a medical condition which slows down my metabolism so hard to lose weight, I have spent hundreds on clothes the last couple of months and every single thing has gone back! I'll be going out naked at this rate 🤣

@torquewench

Wheres the best place to shop for a young looking age 50 rock chick who doesnt like polyester/florals/boden/seasalt/hush?
I can recommend charity shops . Fabulous places for us 50 something rock chicks . For new I love all saints .
frillseeking · 28/06/2021 21:28

@CoralSparkles

I’m petite (UK size 4 and 5’1”). Please help me find some new pretty clothes for work. I could also do with some new shorts for summer. Thank you!
Most shops start at a size 6 so you must find it difficult to find things in your size. ASOS petites have the largest selection but retailers such as Reiss and Other Stories offer size 4.

I'd team the tailored trousers from Reiss with the pretty Stories blouse.

I also love this little skirt, this is a real wardrobe staple www.stories.com/en_gbp/clothing/skirts/mini-skirts/product.belted-mini-skirt-black.0934641001.html that would look cute with this little blouse www.stories.com/en_gbp/clothing/blouses-shirts/blouses/product.ruffle-collar-puff-sleeve-blouse-white.0994806002.html

I need an outfit for a summer sports event. 5 ft 8, size 16, large boobs and mum tum. Decent legs, prefer not to show upper arms.

frillseeking · 28/06/2021 21:47

@BarryTheChopper

Size 12, 5’4. Very narrow torso, big boobs, no hips, no bum.

I do a lot of weights though and have pretty chunky arms and thighs so nothing fits me. Especially nothing fitted. If it fits my limbs and chest, it hangs off me everywhere else.

Any suggestions for good shapes to try?

This is a tricky one, especially without seeing what you look like. I'd say that you want to highlight your narrow torso and create some balance to your silhouette as you say you have no hips or bum but you say you struggle with anything fitted. If you go for a style that has a self tie belt, you can pull this in to highlight your best bits as such.

Just for an idea of shape, I'd like to suggest this shape as it would fit in the arms and legs department and the button down placket allows room for boobs but the tie waist gives you same shape. I'm not sure if you want to show off your arms if you're doing weights, I would guess so which is why I went for sleeveless.
@Staffroomdoughnut try ASOS for larger shoes. I'm a 9 wide and it's the only place I shop from now. There are brands alongside their own label.
@northernstars
Thanks. I don’t generally shop there but will take a look. A few of the high street shops that did 9s are long gone (Barretts etc). Clarks do some styles and I’ve got some not-too-frumpy Hotter sandals.

Also to OP have picked up some great tips from your thread! Thanks.

@thereinmadnesslies

I’m 40, 5ft6, size 16 with a tummy, big boobs, big shoulders and chunky legs. I need a smart black dress for a work event next week - nothing short or revealing and it has to be black. I’d be grateful for any suggestions - thank you
